Chapter 51: The Demonic Infusion and a Shadow’s Intervention

Su Qinghan sat up in bed, her expression graver than it had ever been.

“Jiu Li.”

“What is it? Not sleeping in the middle of the night, hoping to ascend to immortality?” Jiu Li’s languid, loli-like voice echoed in her mind, thick with drowsiness.

“No more idle talk.” Su Qinghan’s voice was heavy. “Infuse me with spiritual power.”

Silence descended within her mind for a moment.

“Are you serious?” Jiu Li’s voice grew serious as well.

‘The more you use my demonic energy, the further you’ll drift from humanity, you fool.’ Jiu Li mused inwardly. After a moment of silence, she spoke.

“Then… very well.”

Jiu Li seemed to have discerned the gravity of the situation, refraining from further words.

The very next second, a wild, icy energy, brimming with untamed vitality, erupted from the depths of Su Qinghan’s dantian.

Unlike the gentle, peaceful Daoist true qi she cultivated, this power was aggressively invasive, akin to a breaching flood, relentlessly scouring every parched inch of her meridians.

“Ugh!”

Su Qinghan let out a muffled groan.

Under the moonlight, several strands of her soft, raven-black hair visibly transformed, rapidly shedding their darkness from the roots to become dazzling silver-white.

Behind her, the air subtly distorted, revealing a pair of fluffy, spirit-energy-manifested fox ears and a bushy fox tail, shimmering into existence with more vividness and solidity than ever before.

A jolt of needle-like pain first shot through her long-numbed legs, followed by a surge of warmth, gradually dispelling the sensation of paralysis.

Power was returning.

Su Qinghan slowly lowered her legs from the bed, tentatively placing her feet on the cold floor.

The solid contact of her soles with the ground caused a brief moment of disorientation.

She stood up.

Her body swayed slightly, but undeniably, she was standing on her own two legs.

This long-lost sensation made her clench her fists involuntarily.

‘No, these ears are too conspicuous.’ She glanced around, her gaze falling upon a decorative bamboo hat hanging on the wall. ‘Perfect.’

She walked over, took down the hat, and placed it on her head; the wide brim instantly obscured most of her face.

Having done all this, she did not approach the door she had broken, but instead turned and silently pushed open another, intact window.

With a lithe flip, she landed in the courtyard without making a sound.

The night wind swept past, stirring the hem of her clothes and a few strands of silver hair.

Her form flickered, transforming into a blurred afterimage, and in a few swift bounds, she soared over the high courtyard walls of Master Qian’s residence, vanishing into the deep night.

Niujia Village.

At this moment, the village was a living hell.

Flames shot skyward, and thick smoke billowed, staining half the night sky an ominous dark red.

The screams and cries of villagers mingled with the roars of demonic beasts, composing a symphony of death.

Dozens of burly wolf demons were savagely preying on the scattered, fleeing villagers.

Their sharp claws swiped, their fangs tore, and blood stained their grotesque muzzles.

“Beasts! Prepare to die!”

Several demon exorcists, clad in the Demon Exorcism Division’s tight-fitting uniforms, formed a defensive array, fighting desperately. However, their numbers were too few, and they were quickly scattered by the pack of wolf demons.

“Junior Sister Yun! Watch out!” a male disciple exclaimed in alarm.

Yun Rong, the young girl who had brought the news, had arrived with Lu Hongzhuang. Now, she was cornered by a wolf demon, her face contorted with terror, her sword-gripping hand trembling.

Drooling, the wolf demon lunged violently at her!

Yun Rong, terrified, squeezed her eyes shut.

“Clang—!”

A clear, ringing sword cry pierced the air.

A fiery red figure slashed its way from another part of the battlefield, moving so swiftly it left only an afterimage!

Lu Hongzhuang wielded her longsword, its gleam like a bolt of silk, instantly slicing across the wolf demon’s neck!

The massive wolf head shot into the air, and scalding demonic blood splattered across Yun Rong’s face.

“Senior Sister Lu!” Yun Rong cried out in joyful relief, having narrowly escaped death.

“Hold the line! Protect the villagers and get them into our defensive perimeter!”

Lu Hongzhuang’s voice was icy, laced with suppressed fury. Without a moment’s hesitation, she turned and plunged into the pack of wolf demons.

She poured all her sorrow and rage into her sword blade. Every strike was swift, precise, and ruthless!

However, the sheer number of wolf demons was overwhelming.

A demon exorcist had just slain one wolf demon when, from behind, another’s sharp claws silently attacked! He had no time to react!

At this critical juncture.

“Pfft!”

The head of the ambushing wolf demon suddenly exploded as if detonated from within, sending crimson and white matter scattering in all directions.

The demon exorcist was stunned, still reeling from what had just happened.

On another side, two more demon exorcists were besieged by three wolf demons, their lives hanging by a thread.

Suddenly, a dark shadow flashed past them with incredible speed.

“Snap! Crack!”

Two crisp sounds of bone breaking.

Two of the wolf demons attacking them stiffened, then toppled over rigidly, their necks twisted at grotesque angles.

Before the remaining wolf demon could react, the two exorcists seized the opportunity and hacked it to pieces with their swords.

“?”

A peculiar shift began to occur in the overall battle situation.

Whenever a demon exorcist found themselves in dire straits, the deadly wolf demons would suddenly drop dead in various bizarre ways.

Either their heads would abruptly explode, their hearts would be pierced, or their necks would be twisted by an unseen force.

The surviving demon exorcists exchanged bewildered glances, utterly baffled, but their instinct for survival immediately prompted them to seize the chance and fiercely counterattack.

On the highest rooftop at the village entrance.

Su Qinghan, wearing her bamboo hat, crouched in the shadows, her expression indifferent.

Between her slender fingers, she held a few unremarkable pebbles. Demonic energy flowed through her fingertips, causing the pebbles’ surfaces to glow faintly.

She flicked her finger.

“Whoosh—!”

A pebble sliced through the night sky, whistling sharply, and accurately shot into the eye socket of a distant wolf demon about to pounce on a child, exiting from the back of its head!

Having done all this, she didn’t even glance at the result, her form flickering as she vanished into another, deeper shadow.

‘With this Daoist Lord making a move, not a single one shall die. Especially that idiot in red.’

The tide of battle was imperceptibly, yet completely, turned.

Lu Hongzhuang also sensed that something was amiss.

‘This is too easy. These wolf demons are dying too strangely. This isn’t a coincidence, absolutely not! Someone is helping from the shadows!’

She cleaved the wolf demon before her in half with a single sword stroke, then abruptly looked up, her gaze like lightning, swiftly sweeping across all surrounding vantage points where someone could hide.

It was in that instant! She saw it!

On a distant, crumbling rooftop, a black silhouette stretched long under the moonlight and firelight.

The person wore a wide bamboo hat, their face obscured.

But that figure… That slender, yet inexplicably familiar form… ‘Too familiar!’

“Who’s there?!”

Lu Hongzhuang roared, pushing off with her feet, transforming into a red arrow as she leaped across burning roof beams, fiercely pursuing the retreating figure!

On the rooftop, Su Qinghan’s heart skipped a beat. ‘Oh hell! Is this girl a hound?! How could she possibly find me!’

Without hesitation, she turned and fled!
