Join the ServerLu Hongzhuang’s voice faltered, her face burning crimson as she scrambled to retrieve the brush, wishing for nothing more than to disappear into the earth.
From beyond the white mist, the gentle rustle of water being poured finally ceased.
Immediately thereafter, the dense fog that had clung to the riverbank began to thin and dissipate with remarkable speed, as if swept away by an unseen hand.
Instincti vely, Lu Hongzhuang lifted her gaze.
What she saw caused her movements to freeze entirely.
“Ah! What are you doing?!”
She shrieked, her hands shooting up to cover her eyes with lightning speed, though an involuntary crack remained between her fingers.
By the riverbank, Su Qinghan had just emerged from the water, now seated in her wheelchair.
She was clad only in a white, gauze undergarment, thin as a cicada’s wing, which clung damply to her form, tracing the delicate, exquisite curves of her youthful figure.
As moonlight cascaded upon her, droplets of water glided down her alabaster skin, vanishing into the depths of her collar—a sight more breathtaking than any masterfully painted landscape.
Su Qinghan, by contrast, remained utterly unperturbed. Wringing out her long, still-dripping hair, she cast a glance filled with disdain at the overly flustered Lu Hongzhuang.
“What kind of reaction is that? This Daoist Master used to fish bare-chested in the river during summer, and I never saw anyone scream like that.”
She suddenly paused, realizing her words. ‘I’m no longer a boy,’ she thought, ‘so I should indeed be more mindful. Yet, isn’t she also an unmarried maiden? Such a fuss over nothing!’
Pushing her wheelchair, she slowly glided towards Lu Hongzhuang, eager to inspect the results of her talisman drawing.
However, a sudden gust of night wind swept through, causing Su Qinghan to shiver involuntarily.
“Hmph… it truly is a bit chilly.”
She frowned, her gaze shifting from the soaking wet gauze clinging to her body to the utterly flustered Lu Hongzhuang beside her.
“Hey, you dolt, stop covering your eyes.”
Su Qinghan issued her command with an air of complete justification.
“Come here and help me get dressed.”
“Ah?”
Lu Hongzhuang abruptly dropped her hands, the warmth in her cheeks escalating even further.
‘Help her… get dressed?’
Su Qinghan had already retrieved a clean outer robe from her satchel, offering it directly to Lu Hongzhuang. Her cool, clear eyes fixed steadily on Lu Hongzhuang, conveying a silent challenge: ‘Dare to refuse.’
Lu Hongzhuang’s mind buzzed, her thoughts swirling into an utter chaos.
Accepting the clothes, her fingers trembled imperceptibly.
The soft fabric still held the lingering warmth of Su Qinghan’s body, along with a faint, earthy scent of herbs.
Taking a deep breath, as if bracing herself for battle, she moved behind Su Qinghan, clumsily unfurling the outer robe, intending to drape it over her.
Yet her heart remained a tangled knot of nerves.
Her fingers, quite by accident, brushed against Su Qinghan’s cool nape.
The delicate sensation made Lu Hongzhuang recoil her hand as though she had been burned.
“What are you dawdling for?” Su Qinghan prompted, her tone laced with impatience. “Do you intend for me to freeze to death so you can inherit my four-wheeled cart?”
“N-no!”
Spurred by the taunt, Lu Hongzhuang abandoned her shyness, quickly retrieving the clothes and meticulously helping Su Qinghan don them.
First, she slid the sleeves onto Su Qinghan’s arms, then adjusted the collar, and finally fastened the waist belt.
Throughout the entire process, Lu Hongzhuang held her breath, her eyes meticulously fixed on her own hands, not daring to glance elsewhere.
Yet, the more she restrained herself, the more acutely her senses heightened.
The fresh scent of bath soap, mingled with Su Qinghan’s unique body fragrance, wafted in faint tendrils into Lu Hongzhuang’s nostrils, stirring a profound disquiet within her.
By the time Su Qinghan was finally dressed, Lu Hongzhuang found herself covered in a fine sheen of perspiration.
“Haaah…” Su Qinghan stretched languidly, emitting a deep sigh of contentment. “There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a good bath.”
She rotated her shoulders, seemingly sensing a chill within her body. Closing her eyes briefly, she roused the meager qi and blood still circulating within her.
A faint, gentle warmth permeated her limbs and body, swiftly dispelling every trace of the lingering coolness.
Having completed this, she finally directed her gaze to the ground.
There, scattered around Lu Hongzhuang’s feet, lay a collection of failed talismans, crumpled into tight paper balls.
Su Qinghan casually picked one up and unfurled it. The crooked, unsightly cinnabar marks scrawled across it were truly a dismal sight.
“Dolt.”
She offered her assessment without a hint of politeness.
“Not a single one succeeded?”
Su Qinghan maneuvered her wheelchair, gliding smoothly to Lu Hongzhuang’s side.
Without uttering another word, she simply reached out, taking hold of Lu Hongzhuang’s hand, still grasping the cinnabar brush, from behind.
A warm, soft palm enveloped the back of Lu Hongzhuang’s hand.
Lu Hongzhuang’s breath hitched, her rhythm momentarily disrupted.
She could distinctly feel Su Qinghan’s fingers gently adjusting her grip on the brush.
“Calm your mind,”
Su Qinghan’s voice, imbued with an almost magical quality, resonated softly beside her ear.
“Think of nothing else; simply feel the flow of my qi.”
A faint yet incredibly pure surge of energy emanated from the hand Su Qinghan held, flowing up Lu Hongzhuang’s arm and guiding the brush tip onto the pristine yellow paper before them.
In that singular moment, Lu Hongzhuang felt the entire world fall silent around her.
She was no longer herself; instead, she had become merely the brush in Su Qinghan’s hand.
The brush tip danced across the yellow paper, flowing like water, completing the strokes in a single, effortless motion.
There was no hesitation, not the slightest tremor of uncertainty.
As the final stroke descended, a perfectly formed talisman, its spiritual radiance subtly contained, appeared starkly upon the yellow paper.
“There.”
Su Qinghan released her grip.
Lu Hongzhuang lowered her gaze, staring at the talisman she had ‘personally’ drawn, a momentary daze clouding her expression.
Lifting her head, she met Su Qinghan’s clear, bright eyes, which held a subtle glimmer of encouragement.
“Activate it. Try.”
Lu Hongzhuang’s heart quickened. Mimicking Su Qinghan’s previous actions, she clasped the talisman between her index and middle fingers, then channeled the cultivated spiritual energy from within her body into it.
“Buzz!”
The talisman flared with a soft white glow, then spontaneously combusted without emitting any flame.
However, it did not turn to ash; instead, it transformed into countless firefly-like motes of light, which drifted gracefully in the air before slowly dissipating and merging into the surrounding atmosphere.
Wherever these luminous specks drifted, the very air seemed to grow several shades fresher.
“How beautiful…” Lu Hongzhuang murmured, almost to herself.
“That wasn’t the Spirit Gathering Talisman you just drew,” Su Qinghan clarified,
“This is a ‘Spiritual Power Talisman’. It’s used in environments where spiritual energy is scarce, allowing one to artificially create a small area brimming with spiritual energy, perfect for quickly replenishing stamina and mental fortitude.”
“For you, in your current state, it’s far more practical than a Spirit Gathering Talisman.”
With that, she reached into the satchel hanging from her wheelchair, retrieved a small gourd, and offered it to Lu Hongzhuang.
“You must be thirsty. Drink some water.”
Lu Hongzhuang was indeed parched. She accepted the gourd, pulled out the stopper, and tilted her head back, taking a generous gulp.
The crisp spring water cascaded down her throat, bearing a subtle, almost ephemeral sweetness that instantly quelled the agitation within her.
“Mmm, that’s delicious.”
She couldn’t resist taking another deep draught.
Su Qinghan watched her, a mischievous smile curling at the corners of her lips.
“Good, isn’t it?”
“Yes!”
“I collected it while I was bathing just now.”
“Pfft—!”
The water Lu Hongzhuang had just taken into her mouth, before she could even swallow it, was entirely sprayed out in a single, explosive burst!
She coughed violently, her face instantly flushing a deep crimson, and she glared at Su Qinghan with a mixture of shame and fury.
“Y-you… you… you…”
Witnessing her disheveled state, Su Qinghan could no longer contain herself, erupting into a clear, uninhibited peal of laughter.
“Hahahaha! You actually fell for it!”
She laughed so hard her body rocked back and forth, causing even her wheelchair to sway precariously.
“It’s just ordinary mountain spring water! Why are you so easily fooled? Hahaha!”
Lu Hongzhuang stood stunned.
Watching Su Qinghan shake with laughter, she finally registered that she had been thoroughly played.
A surge of nameless fury shot straight to her head.
Lu Hongzhuang’s fists clenched tightly.
“Su! Qing! Han!”
Gritting her teeth, she lunged forward, her hands shooting out to mercilessly tickle Su Qinghan’s armpits.
“Ah! What are you doing! Hahaha… Stop! That tickles! Hahahaha…”
Su Qinghan, most susceptible to tickling, instantly lost her composure under the assault. Tears streamed from her eyes as she twisted and turned in her wheelchair, desperately trying to evade the attack.
The two young women frolicked by the quiet river, their clear laughter carrying far, dispelling the solitude of the wilderness.
After a good while of playful wrestling, both felt a pleasant weariness.
Lu Hongzhuang stopped, panting slightly, and looked at Su Qinghan, who lay slumped in her wheelchair, weak from laughter. The knot of frustration in her heart had inexplicably dissolved.
Su Qinghan took a long moment to regain her breath, wiping away the tears that had streamed from her eyes due to laughter. She then looked up at the moon hanging in the sky.
“Sigh…”
She let out a soft sigh, asking languidly,
“How much longer until we see signs of human habitation?”
Lu Hongzhuang followed her gaze, estimating their journey.
“If we travel quickly, we should reach the next town by tomorrow afternoon.”
She paused, then added,
“It’s called Wangyue Town. We can restock our supplies there.”
