Join the ServerSu Qinghan leaned back in her wheelchair, her eyes still closed, her fingers tapping idly on the armrest. She suddenly let out a soft chuckle, speaking to herself.
“Your esteemed Magistrate truly thinks highly of me.”
“Surely he doesn’t genuinely believe that capturing a ‘frail woman’ like myself will allow him to control that fool Lu Hongzhuang, does he?”
Her voice was not loud, yet it drifted clearly through the courtyard, which had suddenly fallen silent.
As her words faded, two dark figures emerged from the shadows of the courtyard wall. They were two men, clad in simple cloth garments, their faces obscured by black cloth, revealing only their eyes. One of them was precisely the man who had been selling sundry goods at the street corner earlier.
They advanced towards Su Qinghan, one on her left, one on her right, neither hurried nor slow, forming a pincer movement.
One of the black-clad men let out a hoarse chuckle.
“My lady jests,” he rasped, “what Magistrate are you speaking of? My brother and I are certainly not at Magistrate Jia’s beck and call.” He paused, his tone laced with a false greed. “We are merely unemployed wanderers passing through this area. Upon seeing you, my lady, so exceedingly beautiful, we were overcome with an irresistible urge. We simply wished to invite you for a cup of tea and a chat about life.”
“Exactly, exactly,” the other chimed in. “None of this has anything to do with Magistrate Jia. This is entirely our own initiative!”
‘What a performance of “protesting too much”.’
‘And they’re quite dedicated actors at that.’
Su Qinghan finally opened her eyes. Her cool, clear gaze swept over the two men, a hint of mockery playing on her lips.
“Surely you don’t truly believe that simply because I’m in a wheelchair, I’m some helpless, easily manipulated target, do you?”
The two black-clad men exchanged a glance, the patience in their eyes vanishing.
“It seems Miss Su has no intention of cooperating.”
“In that case, don’t blame us brothers for lacking pity for the fairer s*x! We have ample strength and methods to make you obedient!”
Before their words had fully faded, both men moved in unison! They drew steel sabers from their waists, yet with a practiced synchronicity, they flipped the blades, using the broad, blunt backs of the sabers to strike at Su Qinghan’s nape and shoulder, one from each side!
Their orders were to capture and detain her alive. A delicate, disabled beauty could be knocked unconscious and carried away in a single move. The sabers whistled through the air, their passage rending the silence, poised to strike!
Su Qinghan, however, did not even turn her head. Just as the saber’s blunt edge was about to touch her skin!
Clink!
A crisp, light sound! Su Qinghan’s right index and middle fingers, seemingly without her having moved, had risen with lightning speed to lightly tap the blade of the steel saber on her right! An inexplicable force surged back along the blade, causing the black-clad man’s hand to convulse violently, nearly sending his steel saber flying from his grip!
Meanwhile, Su Qinghan, utilizing the recoil from her tap, executed a swift, complete 360-degree rotation to her left, wheelchair and all!
*Thud!* A muffled thud! The blunt edge of the saber from the left-side black-clad man struck squarely against the backrest of the rapidly rotating wheelchair! Wood splinters flew!
The pupils of both black-clad men contracted sharply, their hearts seized by a tempest of shock. ‘What kind of reaction speed is that? How could someone in a wheelchair possibly do such a thing!’ They realized they had severely underestimated the woman before them.
“Attack together! Cripple her!”
One of them roared, abandoning the idea of taking her away unharmed. The saber backs instantly flipped, and two gleaming arcs of death sliced through the sunlight! A horizontal slash aimed at her waist! Two steel sabers, one leading, one following, approached from two distinct angles, sealing off all of Su Qinghan’s escape routes, their targets fixed on her waist and abdomen! This move was clearly intended to sever her and her wheelchair in two! A lethal killing intent surged towards her!
On Su Qinghan’s face, however, not a trace of panic could be seen. Just as the two flashes of steel were about to reach her, she abruptly raised a hand and slapped the armrest of her wheelchair!
Whir!
The wheelchair vibrated with a soft hum, and Su Qinghan herself, propelled by the force of that slap, flew horizontally from the chair! Her body, suspended in mid-air, executed an astonishing horizontal spin! Her posture was so light and ethereal, devoid of any earthly clumsiness.
Swish! Swish!
Two chilling flashes of steel crossed paths, almost grazing her waist, abdomen, and back! The blades sliced through empty air, but not before completely severing the already cracked backrest of the wheelchair!
And just as she passed one of the black-clad men, her fingertips, unbeknownst to him, had already pressed a yellow talisman silently onto his back!
Freeze!
The black-clad man’s forward momentum abruptly froze. The sneer on his face solidified, and he remained perfectly still, frozen mid-swing, transformed into a human statue.
Su Qinghan gracefully landed back in her wheelchair. The wheelchair’s wheels smoothly slid backward, instantly creating a distance of several meters. The entire confrontation unfolded in a flash of lightning. One still, one moving. One black-clad man was frozen in place, a living target.
The other black-clad man stared at Su Qinghan, his face etched with horror, his hand gripping the saber trembling slightly. ‘What the hell… is she even human? She’s this fierce even in a wheelchair. If she could stand, we brothers probably wouldn’t last two moves!’
Su Qinghan sat steadily in her wheelchair, casting a regretful glance at the now bare backrest behind her. ‘That was excellent wood, wasted just like that.’ She lifted her head, looking at the sole remaining enemy, her tone as flat as if discussing a trivial matter.
“Did you truly think I came unprepared?” She clapped her hands, cleared her throat, then suddenly drew a deep breath, focusing her qi in her dantian, and let out a powerful, resounding shout towards the entrance of Master Qian’s manor.
“Show yourself, Lu Hongzhuang! If not now, when?!”
Her voice echoed through the courtyard, brimming with confidence and conviction. The sole remaining black-clad man stiffened at her words, immediately turning a wary gaze towards the main gate. ‘Lu Hongzhuang? The Demon Exorcism Division’s female fiend?! Wasn’t she lured away? Could it be… the people sent to stop her failed?’
One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.
The entrance to Master Qian’s manor remained utterly empty. In the courtyard, a deathly silence reigned. Only the wind whispered softly, swirling a single fallen leaf as it drifted past.
Nothing happened.
Su Qinghan: “…”
The black-clad man: “…”
The black-clad man frozen in place: “…” (Though unable to move, his eyes were filled with bewilderment.)
The expression on Su Qinghan’s face gradually froze. ‘In her heart, ten thousand penguins stampeded.’ ‘That girl! No way? No way?! She couldn’t have actually mistaken two hundred paces for two thousand, could she?! That idiot! Always messing up at the crucial moment! I finally tried to put on a show, and it completely fell flat!’
“Heh… heheh…” The sole remaining black-clad man let out a dry, rasping laugh, a sound filled with the relief of a narrow escape and blatant mockery of Su Qinghan.
“Miss Su, your ’empty fort strategy’ isn’t very convincing. It seems your Lady Lu doesn’t quite cooperate with you, does she?”
He tightened his grip on his steel saber once more, advancing step by step. This time, he harbored no trace of underestimation. ‘This woman, even if she’s disabled, is absolutely a venomous scorpion who will bite! I must kill her with a single strike, then tell the Magistrate she’s been detained, grab the money, and flee!’
Su Qinghan cursed inwardly, yet her expression remained perfectly serene. ‘Relying on that idiot is, as expected, less reliable than relying on myself.’
