Join the ServerIn a hidden underground cavern within the city, Xuange crashed through the stone door in disarray, stumbling inside and leaving a long trail of blood on the ground.
A sword wound, deep enough to expose bone, marred his chest. Flesh was torn and blood flowed incessantly, while a sinister, domineering sword energy lingered within, relentlessly eroding his life force.
“Brother Xuange!”
A cry, filled with alarm, rang out.
Deep within the cavern, in a meticulously arranged prison cell, a charming rabbit-eared girl was confined. It was Bai Xue.
Upon seeing Xuange’s dreadful state, her face turned ashen with fright. She frantically rattled the cell door.
“How are you so severely injured? Who did this to you?”
“There’s no time left…”
Leaning against the wall, Xuange gasped for air. He could feel the master of that blood-red sword energy rapidly approaching.
“By the Demon Emperor’s decree, all weak, non-combatant tribes around Moonfall Town are to be abandoned, consumed by powerful demon clans to enhance their strength. This thunderous display will awe Moonfall Town and deter humanity.”
Xuange gazed at Bai Xue, his eyes filled with a complex emotion.
“Your rabbit tribe… I have already arranged for them to migrate to a safe place.”
With a trembling hand, he fumbled a beast-skin map from his robes and tossed it before the cell.
“This is the address.”
“As for why you are confined… it is because I have discovered a method for you to attain boundless merit.”
Bai Xue’s tears welled up instantly. She shook her head forcefully.
“I don’t want any merit! I just want you to live!”
“Let’s leave the demon race, okay? The world is vast; there must be a place for us to settle down!”
Xuange paid no heed to her cries.
He merely offered a desolate smile.
“It’s too late.”
“There’s a terrifying fox behind me who has also set her sights on this destiny… I must act before her.”
He abruptly raised his hand, forming an ancient demonic incantation.
*Buzz—!*
Across the cavern walls, countless profound and intricate demonic runes instantly illuminated, forming a vast and eerie array.
His solemn voice echoed through the cavern.
“I, Xuange of the Wolf Clan, have accumulated grievous karma through a lifetime of slaughter, my hands stained with blood.
“Fortunate to have met Bai Xue’s love, my stubbornness was moved, and only then did I learn to turn back.
“Today, I willingly descend into the eighteen layers of hell, to be punished for eternity, to atone for this lifetime of bloodshed!”
“No! Xuange! Stop talking!”
Bai Xue sobbed uncontrollably, on the verge of fainting.
Yet, Xuange reached out through the air.
A demonic core, shimmering with a faint green light, was forcibly extracted from his own body!
He formed another incantation, and the cell door swung open in response.
An invisible force held Bai Xue captive, rendering her unable to move.
“I willingly entrust my life to Bai Xue.”
Xuange’s voice grew incredibly weak, yet it carried a sense of liberation.
He guided Bai Xue’s trembling hand, slowly raising it towards the demonic core suspended in the air.
Then, he controlled her fingers, clenching them suddenly!
“With the power of my demonic core, I shall save all the living beings in this city!”
*Crack!*
The demonic core shattered.
The boundless demonic power did not explode violently. Instead, it transformed into the purest, most gentle life energy, instantly spreading outwards along the array patterns on the ground!
A visible green halo, originating from the cavern, swept across the entirety of Moonfall Town!
Wherever the halo passed, all the wailing injured, both human and demon, found their wounds healing at a visible rate, provided their bodies were still intact.
Countless lives on the brink of death were pulled back from the precipice.
This was an act of immeasurable merit, a profound salvation.
Inside the cavern, Xuange’s body lost all strength, collapsing softly. Yet, on his face, there was a faint, contented smile.
Gazing at Xuange, who lay in a pool of blood, Bai Xue let out a heart-wrenching scream.
Outside the cavern, Su Qinghan stood quietly, her black and white hair fluttering in the night breeze.
She had arrived long ago, yet she had not intervened.
Xuange leaned against the cold stone wall, his chest wound gruesome and terrifying. The lingering sword energy, like a maggot burrowing into bone, relentlessly devoured his last vestiges of life.
Gasping for breath, he turned his head, looking towards the tear-streaked rabbit-eared girl in the cell.
“Xue’er…”
His voice was barely a whisper, yet it held a strange tenderness.
“Do you feel it? This boundless power of merit…”
“Does it feel like you’re not far from becoming an immortal?”
Bai Xue felt nothing of the sort. All she felt was her heart being crushed by an invisible hand, the pain making it impossible to breathe.
She shook her head frantically, hot tears streaming down her face.
“I feel it, it’s so warm… truly so warm…”
Xuange coughed up a mouthful of black blood, using his last strength to turn towards the silent white figure standing at the cavern entrance.
“Can you… spare her life?”
His voice held a hint of pleading.
“In her life, she has harmed neither human nor demon… she is a kind, good rabbit.”
A complex smile appeared on Xuange’s face, filled with nostalgia, self-mockery, and boundless tenderness.
“So kind… a foolish rabbit who even saved a wolf.”
Fragments of their past flashed rapidly before his eyes.
It was that foolish rabbit who saved him with her most precious spiritual herbs when he was gravely injured and on the verge of death.
It was also that foolish rabbit who, when he was steeped in slaughter, clung to his leg, weeping and begging him to cease his bloodshed.
And it was that foolish rabbit who, when he was weak and ostracized by the wolf pack, still remained steadfastly by his side, foolishly trailing behind him.
Su Qinghan remained silent.
Xuange offered a desolate smile, seemingly interpreting her silence as acquiescence.
“Thank you…”
His head slumped to the side, and he drew his last breath.
Su Qinghan pursed her lips.
‘Merit?’
‘It’s not so easily acquired.’
In her previous life, she had entered the Daoist sect, which emphasized countless cycles of reincarnation and cultivation for this ethereal merit. Only by achieving perfect merit in one lifetime could one ascend to immortality.
Yet, how many brilliant talents lost their true selves during their long cycles of reincarnation? A single lifetime of wrongdoing could exhaust all accumulated merit, condemning them to the ‘soup’ punishment in the eighteen layers of Diyu.
She formed an incantation, spiritual light swirling around her fingertips as she rapidly performed a divination.
A moment later, her movements stilled.
Indeed, an astonishingly vast amount of merit had materialized on the rabbit’s body from thin air.
‘This wolf demon…’
‘He actually accomplished it.’
He had traded his own eternal damnation for his beloved’s instant ascension.
‘Could he truly be a genius?’
Inside the cavern, Bai Xue stumbled to Xuange’s side, embracing his rapidly chilling body tightly.
She clasped his large, blood-stained hand, holding it tightly to herself, as if she could draw a trace of lingering warmth from it.
“I don’t want any merit! I just want you to live!”
Her cries were heartbreaking.
“Let’s leave the demon race, okay? The world is so vast, there must be a place for us to settle down!”
The poor soul would never respond to her again.
Bai Xue’s weeping gradually subsided, replaced by suppressed sobs.
She lifted her head, tears still on her face, but a tragically beautiful smile slowly curved her lips.
She formed an unfamiliar incantation.
“I, Bai Xue, the rabbit demon, fortunate to have been doted upon by Xuange…”
Her voice was soft, yet it carried an undeniable resolve.
“Unwilling for him to journey to the Netherworld alone, I willingly follow…”
Just as she was about to sever her meridians, Su Qinghan’s cool voice rang out.
