Staring intently, Wang Yu had been squatting there for quite some time, fixated on the source of the voice. It was undeniably a bear, yet its fur was a distinct black and white, its white head adorned with dark circles and black ears.
Despite its ursine appearance, Wang Yu could discern an expression of utter despair on its face.
Wang Yu wondered if she was still dreaming. After all, she hadn’t slept well the previous night and had been forcibly woken by the young girl.
Even a short stroll through the streets hadn’t helped; her mind remained somewhat muddled.
The panda, utterly unnerved by Wang Yu’s intense gaze, felt its scalp prickle. ‘My god,’ it thought, ‘from my many years of experience, the face beneath that black robe must belong to an exquisite loli. But why is she staring at me like this? It’s quite frightening for a bear.’
Thus, the panda decided to probe. “Hey, cutie, hello! Don’t you think this bear is adorable? Care to offer some treats? I simply adore honey!” It chattered on in Chinese, oblivious to whether the person before it understood. Alas, Wang Yu remained impassive, continuing her unwavering stare.
The vendor, left awkwardly to the side, felt a pang of embarrassment. Yet, as a seasoned merchant, his primary duty was to promote his wares.
“Oh, honored guest, you’ve taken an interest in this bear!” the vendor exclaimed, his face alight with praise. “You truly have exceptional taste! This bear is an entirely new species. In all my years, I’ve never encountered one like it!”
“How did you manage to catch it?” Wang Yu asked, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
“Catch?” The shopkeeper glanced at the panda, a look of exasperation crossing his face.
“I didn’t catch it at all. One day, I went to the nearest forest to find some new stock. I had planned to use some bait to attract small pets, but then this bear just suddenly popped out! It scared me half to death; I thought I was done for.
“Who would have thought it only had eyes for the bait? It completely ignored me and devoured everything I had!”
Wang Yu shot the panda a look of utter disdain.
The vendor continued, a helpless expression on his face. “The funniest part is, I never intended to capture it. I packed up my things, ready to leave, but then it just followed me all the way back after it finished eating.
“I cautiously tested its temperament and found it wasn’t aggressive, so I brought it home. As long as I give it food every day, it won’t leave.
The problem is, its appetite is enormous, and I can’t find any other food it likes. It ate all my bait, so recently I’ve had to ration it, and it just keeps crying out.”
How disgraceful! And this was supposed to be a national treasure? Though, it seemed this was its inherent nature. Wang Yu tilted her head, observing the panda with contempt.
The panda seemed to sense her judgment, turning its back as if to say, ‘That wasn’t me.’
The vendor, seizing the opportunity, pressed on with his sales pitch. “If you’re interested, why not consider it? This is truly a rare breed, just look at its face!” As he spoke, the vendor forcibly tugged at the panda’s chubby cheeks.
He then squeezed the panda’s fur. “And feel this texture!”
“Now look at this physique!” The vendor hoisted the panda into his arms, pushing it towards Wang Yu and the young girl with a look of utter despair on its face. “It would make an excellent mount for you. Perhaps you—”
The vendor’s words were cut short by Wang Yu.
“What about the meat quality?” Wang Yu asked, sounding somewhat muddled.
“???” The young girl, the vendor, and the panda all froze in confusion.
‘I’ll bet all my future bamboo that this little loli just asked if I tasted good,’ the panda thought, a flicker of terror in its eyes.
Wang Yu’s mind was currently in a state of shutdown, her intelligence rapidly plummeting. Having been constantly tempted by delicious food, her brain was overflowing with thoughts of eating.
Even though the giant panda had startled her, her first reaction was to wonder if eating a panda in another world wouldn’t be illegal.
The vendor, somewhat abashed, tentatively suggested, “Perhaps you could buy it and try it?”
Wang Yu looked at the vendor, then at the panda, until both of them began to feel a little unnerved. She nodded. “Alright, how much?”
The vendor’s eyes lit up. “Ten silver coins!” In truth, the vendor had demanded a much higher price a few days ago, but this bear was simply too gluttonous and lazy, practically eating him into poverty.
Not many people wanted to buy it, he couldn’t hit it, and it couldn’t even perform cute tricks like other pets. The vendor desperately wanted to offload it immediately.
As for what others did with it after buying it, he couldn’t care less. If it weren’t for the money, he would have eaten the bear himself!
“Deal.” Wang Yu handed over the ten silver coins directly. Xiaoke had been left sleeping in the house, and Wang Yu herself was too lazy to haggle.
The panda, clutching the vendor’s leg in terror, refused to let go, seemingly making a final struggle. Alas, the vendor directly pulled it off, then, with a smile, delivered it to Wang Yu.
The giant panda watched Wang Yu approach with trepidation. Wang Yu reached out her small hand, stroking its face, finding the texture rather pleasant.
She then leaned in, rubbing her face against its fur, and whispered into its trembling ear, “‘Be good, and I won’t eat you. Otherwise, you’re going into the pot tonight. After this, follow the young girl.'” Then, she climbed onto the panda’s back and fell asleep (-_-) zzz.
‘I, Wang Yu, need more sleep.’
She left behind a bewildered panda. ‘She just spoke to me,’ it thought. ‘And I understood? Did I awaken some power, comprehending this world’s language with my unparalleled wisdom?’
The young girl and the panda stared at each other.
The young girl was the first to react, walking over to the panda and stroking its head. “There, there, Sister Yu’er is just joking with you.”
“???” Now the panda couldn’t understand again, completely flummoxed. ‘Never mind,’ it decided. ‘This young lady feels so gentle, like a healer. I feel like my happy life as a bear is about to begin.’
Suddenly, Wang Yu snuggled against it, and the panda’s entire body stiffened. Well, probably.
