This single sentence was like a powerful stimulant, injecting life into the otherwise lifeless command center.
The commander shot to his feet, his eyes wide with surprise and elation.
“WER-489 Minor Star System, do you copy? WER-489, do you copy?”
Hearing the persistent calls echoing from the broadcast, the commander immediately ordered the communications officer to connect to the allied forces. Startled but thrilled, the officer quickly began operating the console.
However, a large red ‘X’ soon appeared on the main screen, slowly extinguishing their initial joy and leaving their mind utterly blank.
“What…?”
“What’s wrong? Connect the communication!”
Everyone watched the communications officer expectantly, but the expression on their face made their hearts sink once more.
“Re-report… the surface fires are too intense. The electromagnetic wave emissions inside the base are experiencing severe interference, and the external Quantum Transporter has been destroyed. We can only receive information; we can’t send anything out…”
The bustling hall instantly reverted to its prior state of deathly silence, with only the incessant calls from the Alliance fleet echoing through the broadcast system.
“Perhaps if we wait… wait for the Alliance forces to disperse those damned monsters…”
Someone uttered this, clinging to a naive hope, but the subsequent message from the broadcast shattered everyone’s spirits completely.
“We are deeply sorry; we ultimately arrived too late. According to our military’s observations, there are no longer any signs of life on your planet. While some high-ranking officials might still be alive in certain secret underground facilities, we regret to inform you that given the state of your planet, we are unable to land and rescue them.
However, we can resolve one of your doubts. The creatures that attacked your planet are the Zerg, a species believed to have been annihilated countless eons ago. The cosmic organisms on your surface are merely a fraction of the Zerg.
Their mother organism is currently hovering above you, and we are powerless to save you… We are very sorry, but we must withdraw. The mother organism seems to have targeted us. If we don’t leave now, we fear… crackle… hiss…”
The communication abruptly cut off. Everyone sat silently in their original positions.
The words from the Alliance forces echoed profoundly in their minds: the Zerg, a species once regarded by early humans as a symbol of destruction. Long, long ago, the entire universe united to launch a full-scale encirclement and suppression campaign against them.
At that time, the Zerg had even formed an incredibly vast faction by uniting multiple mother organisms, clashing against all other races in the universe. The final battlefield of that ultimate war lay in the desolate expanse of space not far beyond their star system.
Although the entire universe’s strength was significantly diminished after that war, it ushered in countless eons of peace. While conflicts might arise between star systems, no one wished to encounter a species that knew nothing but relentless slaughter and destruction, especially when compared to conflicts between other intelligent races.
Since then, the Zerg had only been relegated to the annals of history, progressing from textbooks for young children’s general knowledge to once-mandatory examination material, eventually becoming an elective university course.
They were marked as an extremely dangerous and exceptionally rare entity in cosmic biology, an absolute special existence. From that point on, they had withdrawn from the cosmic stage.
Yet, when this monster reappeared, it effortlessly annihilated an entire star system!
Amidst the silence of the command center, gunshots rang out incessantly, until the scent of blood permeated the entire room.
The WER-489 Minor Star System of the WER Star System Alliance officially met its end.
The massive insect, hovering in space, was preparing to retrieve her offspring and devour the planet when a faint fluctuation suddenly drew her attention. She intercepted a segment of this fluctuation, analyzed it, and discovered it was an electronic signal.
Based on the human knowledge contained within the memories of the souls she had consumed, the massive insect effortlessly deciphered the signal’s approximate meaning.
‘So, humans call me the Zerg, huh? Hmm, that means I used to have many family members, but they were all killed. Is that about right?’
The massive insect’s gaze, tinged with ill will, fixed on the few spaceships that had flown from a distance and now hovered far, far away. These must be the reinforcements called by the planet’s leaders. They seemed quite numerous. Hmm? Quantum migration?
The massive insect merely glanced in their direction, and the opposing fleet immediately initiated quantum migration, intending to escape…?
The massive insect decided this was unacceptable.
‘Coming and going as they please? Do they think I’m a vegetarian?’ she thought.
As she pondered this, she brought her two tentacles together. With a surge of energy within her body, a beam of light instantly shot forth from the entangled tips of her tentacles.
It precisely struck the Quantum Channel the fleet was attempting to establish. The massive insect casually set a coordinate and then created another Quantum Gate with a different coordinate atop their channel.
The two Quantum Channel entrances, superimposed, instantly became chaotic before vanishing into the cosmos. The fleet, which had intended to enter the Quantum Gate for a quantum jump back to safety, found themselves empty-handed.
All the warships froze in place, bewildered as to why the stable quantum jump had suddenly failed. Engineers on the warships frantically calculated the underlying principles.
Ultimately, they arrived at a terrifying conclusion.
“Re-report, Officer! I suspect that just now, someone tampered with our Quantum Gate, opening a smaller gate with a different anchor point coordinate, which caused the main gate to become unstable, superimpose, and ultimately collapse.”
The captain was stunned upon hearing this. Such an operation was theoretically feasible but required extremely precise manipulation. Could it be that some genius engineer within this fleet held a grudge against someone and intended to perish with them here?
The thought sent a cold sweat down the captain’s back. Indeed, mutual destruction. On the warship’s display, the massive insect was already approaching with another group of juvenile Zerg.
Setting aside their incredibly vast and astonishing numbers, the mother organism alone could take on this entire fleet without suffering a single scratch!
“We’re doomed, doomed, doomed, doomed…”
Watching the increasingly massive Zerg on the screen, everyone on the warships felt their legs turn to jelly. Faced with such a prehistoric cosmic monster, they didn’t even harbor thoughts of resistance.
Thus, amidst sporadic gunfire, the massive insect effortlessly devoured the entire cosmic fleet.
“Burp.”
