Chapter 64: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Inside Yue Feng’s room at the Tiangongyuan residence, he had finally awoken.

He lay comfortably in bed, his head resting blissfully on a young woman’s lap, as she fed him peeled fruit.

Though his mind had cleared swiftly, his body felt utterly shattered, preventing him from moving much. Fang Yue, however, had assured him he would recover by the next day.

He now found himself empathizing with Haotian Daoist Venerable’s sentiments from that time.

Wang Yu opened the door, and upon witnessing the scene, a wave of exasperation washed over her.

She offered Yue Cai a polite smile. “Cai’er, Sister Fang Yue is looking for you. Allow me to take care of him; you should go meet her in the main hall.”

Yue Cai gently placed Yue Feng’s head back onto the bed. “Alright, Cousin, I’ll be going then.”

With that, the young woman departed, leaving only Wang Yu and Yue Feng in the room.

Wang Yu unceremoniously sat on the edge of the bed. Yue Feng, equally impolitely, rested his head on her smooth, soft lap, even unconsciously nuzzling against it.

Wang Yu’s body was naturally sensitive, and her face flushed instantly. She straightened Yue Feng’s head, preventing him from moving further, and huffed, “Just rest your head; don’t fidget.”

Yue Feng glanced at Wang Yu, surprised by her sudden self-consciousness. However, he believed that not taking advantage of a good opportunity would make him a fool, so he quickly dismissed the thought.

Wang Yu began, “Let me tell you what happened in Fiery Furnace City.”

She then recounted the general sequence of events to Yue Feng, peeling fruit as she spoke—though she ate it herself, much to Yue Feng’s dismay.

‘The Situ family truly suffered a stroke of bad luck,’ Yue Feng pondered, savoring the moment. ‘The Situ family had given their all this time, but the Corpse-Devouring Serpent was far beyond their ability to contend with. That opponent should have been handled by a Sacred Land. However, the Corpse-Devouring Serpent rarely attacked Sacred Lands, which made them complacent and slow to mobilize resources to deal with it. Elder Zhang was essentially their only line of defense, without considering unexpected emergencies. If not for Senior Fang Yue’s timely arrival, they truly would have lost both their reputation and their forces.’

Wang Yu continued, “Today, I saw the Situ family head preparing to execute his second son in the central plaza. I also saw Situ Yan and his younger brother, Situ Yi. Even though that scoundrel Situ Yan often behaved poorly, watching their own kin, or even personally sentencing them to death, still brought them immense sorrow.”

“Situ Yan is a friend, one with whom we’ve shared adventures. I wanted to comfort him and even cracked a joke. Looking back now, it wasn’t the right thing to do, but I didn’t know how else to console him. I just spouted some grand platitudes, and I even felt a bit ashamed.”

Yue Feng painstakingly raised his hand to pat Wang Yu’s head. “I know, and Brother Situ knows too. Sometimes, what you say isn’t as important as expressing your true feelings. He genuinely received your concern, and he’ll remember your words.”

“Those ‘shameful platitudes’ you spoke, for Brother Situ in that moment, were nothing short of a guiding light.”

Wang Yu exhaled. “Thank you. I feel much better now.”

Yue Feng teased, “In that case, as a token of my gratitude, might this humble one sample some of the beautiful Young Lady Wang Yu’s peeled fruit?”

Wang Yu looked at the nearly empty plate, realizing she had almost finished all the fruit originally prepared for Yue Feng by the other young woman. A blush crept up her face. “Ahem, since you’ve helped me, consider this a reward.”

She then offered the peeled fruit in her hand to Yue Feng.

Yue Feng suddenly wailed, “Ah, my hand hurts so much! I moved my shoulder just now, and it feels like my arm is about to fall apart!”

“Alright, stop feigning helplessness.” Wang Yu looked at the pretending Yue Feng with exasperation, bringing the fruit to his lips. “Here, eat.”

Yue Feng swallowed the fruit in one bite, seizing the opportunity to gently brush his lips against Wang Yu’s delicate hand.

Wang Yu shivered, pulling her hand back abruptly. “You won’t be getting out of bed tomorrow either!” she fumed.

Wang Yu then used a little trick Fang Yue had taught her, inflicting a ‘secondary injury’ on Yue Feng’s body.

“Ah!”

“Hmph.” Wang Yu snorted, watching the screaming Yue Feng, then fell silent.

Once the pain subsided, Yue Feng noticed Wang Yu’s hesitant expression, as if she had something to say. “Is there something you want to tell me?” he asked curiously.

Wang Yu nodded, making up her mind. “I want to embark on a solo journey,” she told Yue Feng.

Yue Feng gazed into her eyes, seeing no trace of jest. He gently clasped her hand. “Can you tell me why?” he asked.

Wang Yu thought for a moment but did not pull away. “I need to calm down properly. My time with you all has been very happy and fulfilling, but this alone isn’t enough.”

“Since I arrived in this world, you’ve all cared for me like family. I’ve been able to get many things I wanted without having to think. I’ve gradually lost myself, only thinking of revolving around you all.”

“Many precious things from my past have slowly faded. I don’t even know if losing them is good or bad, which ones I should let go of, and which are worth keeping. I tried to see this world clearly, but my vision was always obscured by your wings.”

“Now, I hope to venture out alone. That’s very important to me, or rather, to us. Yue Feng, I want to give you an answer, but I don’t know what to answer.”

Yue Feng looked at the confused beauty before him. He longed to hold her close, to tell her not to worry about such things, to simply stay by his side, and he would protect her from all harm.

However, having undergone the trials of the Mortal Coil Illusion, he understood that this was the time for him to let go. Just as Wang Yu had helped him in the illusion, he shouldn’t make decisions for her. Instead, he should guide her out of her mental cage and let her explore the world, to discover more possibilities.

Unlike the illusionary game, reality itself was a game one had to play, whether they wanted to or not. It was a world where the strong preyed on the weak, and those who merely clung to others would never grow stronger.

Moreover, reality had no definitive victory or defeat; it was a journey without an end until death. If, by then, he and Wang Yu could ultimately find their way together in this game called reality, there would be no more barriers between them.

Before that, he had to learn to let go.

“Alright, Yu’er.” Yue Feng tightened his grip on Wang Yu’s small hand. Even though every slight exertion sent searing pain through his body, he smiled at her. “I’m grateful you chose to tell me before you leave. I look forward to you finding yourself again.”

“I look forward to you returning to us, and I look forward to the outcome between us. But don’t forget, no matter how strong someone is, they still need companions. We are your eternal support; don’t try to bear everything alone.”

“Also, you must set a time and place for us to meet. Otherwise, I’ll be frantically searching the entire world for you.”

“Thank you.” Wang Yu placed Yue Feng’s head on the pillow, biting her lip, her voice choked with emotion. “I’ve already said goodbye to my teacher. Soon, I’ll go to Alice’s place to make some preparations, and then I’ll set off.”

“I’ll leave my past there; remember to visit. I’ll check in at Luodu, the capital of the Tianyuan Kingdom, a year from now. I hope by then… never mind.”

With that, Wang Yu walked out.

‘Yu’er’s past?’ Yue Feng murmured, watching her slender back disappear. ‘I only want to possess your present and future.’

Outside, Wang Yu took several deep breaths, forcibly calming her emotions.

From the side, Xiaoke stealthily crept closer. Wang Yu shot it a sidelong glance; feeling it was in the way earlier, she had shooed it into a pile of snacks to indulge itself.

Xiaoke’s face was plastered with a fawning smile. “Master, you don’t look too well.”

Wang Yu sighed inwardly. ‘Is that so? You noticed?’

“Indeed, indeed!” Xiaoke said smugly. “According to my years of observation, is it that time of the month for you? I have a formula that’s incredibly effective, it can even treat menopause, ah!”

!!!

Wang Yu glared at Xiaoke, slamming it fiercely into the wall with her fist. She dusted off her hands. “Hmph! Follow me, we’re leaving.”

“Yes~” The imprinted Xiaoke trembled as it flew after her.

Feeling much better after punching Xiaoke, Wang Yu took it to a secluded alley in Fiery Furnace City. Seeing no one around, she silently uttered ‘Alice’ and teleported away.

Inside Haotian Mansion, “Welcome back, Master,” Alice greeted, as graceful and pleasing to the eye as ever.

“My tsundere master, waah!” A-Bao, full from food and drink, cried out, having thought it was abandoned when no one was around. It had wanted to rush out to find them, if not for Alice’s comforting (threatening) words: “If you go out, do you believe you’ll turn into roasted bear in minutes? Then I’ll store you away, waiting for Master to return for a full bear banquet.”

A-Bao said tearfully, “What if they don’t come back?”

Alice smiled cheerfully. “I generally don’t keep live creatures here. If they don’t come back, I’ll have no choice but to turn you into ingredients. Don’t worry, my knife is very fast; it won’t hurt.”

As she spoke, Alice brandished a newly materialized, sharp cleaver. A-Bao immediately cowered in a corner, trembling as it awaited Wang Yu’s return.

“Good boy, A-Bao,” Wang Yu comforted the overly startled child. “Alice was just joking with you. How could we abandon you? I really don’t want a full bear banquet, truly.”

A-Bao wept profusely, rubbing against Wang Yu’s smooth thigh. “I knew Master was the kindest to me!”

Xiaoke covered its face with a paw. ‘This dumb bear! Doesn’t it know that only the words of villains and women are not to be trusted?’

It didn’t just think it or murmur it; Xiaoke, with its thick skull, blurted it out directly.

Alice and Wang Yu looked at it coldly.

“Alice?”

Alice replied politely, “Present. What are Master’s commands?”

“Throw a certain blunt-spoken fellow into the volcano outside for me. Roast it thoroughly, then bring it back.”

Alice instantly appeared beside Xiaoke, restraining it. “Very well, Master. You’ll be satisfied.”

“Ah!”
