Chapter 18: Don’t sleep tonight!

By the time she finished her tasks and switched her phone to the Privacy Space, it was already past ten.

She was quite late getting onto her secondary account tonight, so she had already received several messages from Cheng.

[19:20]

– [Wifey, are you home?]

[20:11]

– [Wifey, aren’t you done yet?]

[20:38]

– [What are you busy with? Still not online at this hour?]

[21:20]

– [Your husband is about to turn into a statue waiting for his wife.]

[22:00]

– [Phone dead again? Not even a single reply, that’s a bit much!]

[22:08]

– [Thinking I’d finally have some time with you this weekend, I turned down my brothers’ invitation to go out, only to end up home alone waiting in vain all night.]

– [#Pitiful little dog#]

This last one had been sent just a few minutes ago.

Shi Kezhen held her phone, reading the messages one by one with a curled smile and crescent eyes.

The feeling of being waited for and remembered was truly wonderful.

She didn’t reply with text but initiated a video call request directly.

It was picked up in a second.

– “Wifey, why did you wait until I was almost asleep to notice me?”

As soon as the call connected, Gao Cheng couldn’t wait to complain, his voice carrying the resentment and grievance accumulated over the entire evening.

His camera wobbled as if he were sitting up from his bed.

The next second, when he saw clearly the little beauty on the screen wearing the sexy lace camisole nightgown he had been dreaming of for days, his heart full of resentment vanished instantly.

– “Wifey…”

Gao Cheng’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as his eyes fixed on the screen, his voice dropped to a low rasp.

– “You don’t plan on sleeping tonight, do you?”

Shi Kezhen let out a coquettish laugh.

– “I saw how pitifully you were waiting for me all night, so I felt bad for you; this is your reward.”

Gao Cheng’s breathing grew visibly heavy.

– “Forget waiting for one night, waiting until dawn would be worth it.”

– “And yet you still complained about me being late.”

His voice grew even lower and huskier, as if suppressing something.

– “I’ll never complain again.”

– “Wifey, come here, kiss me…”

After a few playful exchanges, one of them started it, and the temperatures of the two people separated by the screen began to rise again.

Perhaps it was because the fabric of her pajamas was too thin, giving Gao Cheng too great a shock.

Or perhaps his gaze was too burning.

The process tonight was somewhat crazed.

It was even more frantic than that night a few days ago when she had secretly video-called from the dorm.

By the time both had quieted down, lying in their respective beds and chatting idly, it was already past midnight.

– “Oh, by the way, I should tell you that I have things to do tomorrow; I probably won’t check my phone all day, so don’t wait for me.”

Shi Kezhen’s voice was lazy as she gave him the casual notification.

– “What could be so busy that you don’t even have time to send a text?”

Gao Cheng was puzzled.

Actually, he wanted to ask, ‘Who among young people today doesn’t have their phone in hand from morning till night?’

‘What kind of person wouldn’t look at their phone for an entire day?’

But he didn’t ask.

And Shi Kezhen didn’t explain.

– “Anyway, just don’t wait for me tomorrow, or it’ll be in vain.”

– “What about the evening? Are you free at night?”

Gao Cheng asked again.

– “No, I’ll probably be home very late tomorrow night and won’t go online.”

Gao Cheng let out a light, helpless sigh.

– “Alright then.”

On Saturday morning, after getting up and having breakfast, Shi Yanzhou went back to his room to play games.

Shi Kezhen stayed by Mother Shi’s side to learn the rules… or rather, to perform her filial duties.

First, she accompanied Mother Shi to her beloved conservatory to carefully tend to the expensive flowers and plants.

Then, she assisted Mother Shi with flower arrangement, creating two aesthetically pleasing displays.

One was placed in the living room and the other in the dining room.

Mother Shi stepped back two paces to examine them for a moment before nodding in satisfaction.

By the time they finished the arrangements, it was already past ten in the morning.

Mother Shi then took her to the kitchen to have her learn how to make medicinal nourishing soups.

“Although we always have servants to cook, something made personally with heart is what shows true sincerity,” Mother Shi advised her.

What else could Shi Kezhen say?

She could only nod with a smile.

“Yes.”

Under Mother Shi’s direction, she personally handled the ingredients.

“Yanzhou is a picky eater; you must remember his tastes. Salt must never be overused.”

“The skin and fat of this chicken must be removed first, otherwise, the soup will be too greasy, and Yanzhou won’t like it…”

At noon, Shi Kezhen stood as she served a bowl of her handmade nourishing chicken soup to both Shi Yanzhou and Mother Shi.

The young master took two casual sips; he didn’t say it was good, nor did he say it was bad.

He simply set the bowl aside, picked up his chopsticks, and began eating the other dishes.

He didn’t even bother to offer a single word of evaluation.

Shi Kezhen’s expression remained unchanged as she quietly sat back in her seat.

Mother Shi, however, gave her more face, drinking half a bowl before setting it down and nodding.

“The soup isn’t bad, but the simmering time wasn’t quite enough. Next time, put it on the stove half an hour earlier and let it stew longer.”

Shi Kezhen nodded obediently.

“Understood, Mother. I’ll remember.”

After finishing lunch, Shi Yanzhou pushed his bowl aside.

“I have an appointment to go out and play billiards this afternoon.”

Mother Shi nodded, reminding him in a gentle tone.

“We have to attend Grandpa Zhang’s birthday banquet tonight; come back early in the afternoon to change your clothes.”

“Got it.”

Shi Yanzhou didn’t even look back as he spoke and was the first to leave.

Mother Shi withdrew her gaze from his back and looked at Shi Kezhen, instructing her.

“Tidy up, then come with me to the beauty salon. After the treatment, we have to come back to get our styling done.”
