Chapter 7: Who bullied you?

Last week, when the two of them were walking on campus under an umbrella, they happened to run into Shi Kezhen.

As if deliberately showing off in front of her, Li Yunshu had snatched the umbrella from Shi Yanzhou’s hand and tossed it aside, pulling him into a passionate kiss under the pouring rain for several minutes in front of everyone.

Shi Yanzhou indeed doted on her, indulging her crazy whim.

At that moment, Shi Kezhen had simply stood firmly in place.

She didn’t pretend not to see it, nor did she exhibit the embarrassment typical of a wife catching her husband with another woman.

She just waited quietly.

Once the two of them finished their kiss, she walked over to pick up the discarded umbrella, stepped forward, and held it over Shi Yanzhou’s head.

Rainwater dripped down the umbrella ribs; her voice was as level as could be, devoid of any emotion.

“Your clothes are soaked; you should go back and take a hot shower quickly to avoid catching a cold.”

At that time, Li Yunshu’s smile stiffened for a moment; she clearly hadn’t expected such a reaction from Shi Kezhen.

Li Yunshu gave her a highly displeased look, seemingly blaming her for ruining the mood and spoiling their romance.

Shi Yanzhou snatched the umbrella from her hand, grabbed Li Yunshu, and strode away, leaving behind only one sentence: “Stop minding my business!”

Shi Kezhen stood still, watching their silhouettes disappear into the rain.

Actually, she didn’t want to mind him either.

It was just that whenever he fell ill, she would be charged with the crime of failing to look after him, and would be chided and pressured by Mother Shi.

She didn’t know where Li Yunshu had dragged Shi Yanzhou off to go wild this time, but she hoped they would date in peace and not do something impulsive that would harm his health again.

She took out her phone and sent Shi Yanzhou two messages, asking why he hadn’t come to class.

After hitting send, she locked the screen, not expecting a reply.

As expected, Shi Yanzhou didn’t respond.

She didn’t care anyway; it was merely a routine formality to leave evidence that she had “reminded him.”

***

There was only one major course on Monday afternoon.

After class, Shi Kezhen didn’t return to the dormitory.

She walked toward the small woods behind the library; while this grove was a sacred site for couples at night, it was quite empty and peaceful during the day.

During the day, she liked to space out here alone; no one would disturb her solitude, and it was also a chance for her to use voice chat with Cheng.

Sitting on the long stone bench she frequented, she took out her phone, switched to the Privacy Space, and opened her alternative WeChat account.

Yao: [Hubby, are you busy?]

After two or three seconds, there was no reply.

She exited the chat box and entered the game; he wasn’t online there either.

Yesterday was the first day of the new season, and with a versatile expert like Cheng carrying her, she had already climbed to tier Stars-Legend I, three stars.

They had had a blast playing last night; seeing that she was only three stars away from the King tier, her hands felt a bit itchy, and she considered making an exception to play a round here.

But she quickly composed herself; although there was no one around in the woods right now, it wasn’t a completely private space after all.

It would be bad if someone suddenly walked over mid-game and saw her playing.

After all, the persona she had built was that of a quiet, gentle, dignified, and rigid daughter of a noble house.

“Useless” behaviors like playing games, scrolling through short videos, or binge-watching dramas shouldn’t be associated with her.

She exited the game, and just as she was about to switch back to the main space, a WeChat message from Cheng arrived.

Cheng: [Wifey, is your class over?]

The corners of Shi Kezhen’s mouth curled up slightly.

Yao: [Yeah, want to call? I’m free right now.]

Cheng’s answer was to simply send a video call request.

Shi Kezhen turned off her camera first, connected her Bluetooth earphones, and then answered.

On the screen appeared a young man in a white T-shirt; though his face remained hidden, he held the phone a bit higher this time, revealing a hint of his jawline.

His jaw was sharply defined, looking clean and firm like it had been carved with a blade.

Though she hadn’t seen his features, she was almost certain that Cheng wouldn’t look bad.

At least, just as he had said last night, seeing him wouldn’t ruin the fantasy.

The first sentence out of Cheng’s mouth was an expression of dissatisfaction.

– Wifey, why isn’t your camera on?

– It’s not convenient.

Gao Cheng was standing on his dormitory balcony, one hand holding his phone and the other resting on the railing.

Upon hearing her reply, he tilted his head slightly, exasperated to the limit.

– Why is it always “not convenient”?

He had heard those three words so often that his ears were growing calluses.

Yao was truly mysterious; she only did proper video chats on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, while the rest of the time was full of various “inconveniences.”

Moreover, every time he proactively reached out to her, she always took a very long time to reply.

When asked what she was busy with?

She would either say her phone was on silent during class or that it had run out of battery and turned off; regardless, it sounded quite perfunctory.

Shi Kezhen chuckled, her voice carrying a hint of roguish flirtatiousness.

– Aren’t you used to it yet?

Gao Cheng lost his temper at her tone; switching hands with his phone, his voice was helpless but doting.

– Forget it, if you won’t turn it on, then don’t. Do you want to play a game? You’re only a few stars away from the King tier, right?

– Mm.

– Three stars left, but I don’t feel like playing now; let’s do it tonight.
