Chapter 23: A Misunderstanding

Yu Daiyan looked as though he wanted to say something but held himself back.

Over the past several days, he had already noticed that his disciple wasn’t spending much time studying the breakthrough manual he had personally given him.

Instead, Lin Yang spent most of his days in the Library Pavilion, reading who knew what.

For now, Yu Daiyan refrained from criticizing him too harshly.

After a brief pause, he simply nodded.

“Then continue reading if you must.”

“But don’t delay your breakthrough for too long.”

“Yes, Master.”

Lin Yang nodded in acknowledgment.

Over the following days, he immersed himself in the study of medicine and alchemy.

Whenever he encountered something he didn’t understand, he sought guidance from Zhang Songxi.

Little by little, his understanding of the books listed by the Top Scholar System deepened.

A month passed.

Yu Daiyan watched as Lin Yang not only failed to reduce the amount of time he spent in the library, but instead devoted most of every day to studying medical and alchemical texts.

At last, he couldn’t remain silent any longer.

One afternoon, as Lin Yang returned to the courtyard carrying several books in his arms, Yu Daiyan called him over.

“Master, did you call for me?”

Yu Daiyan looked first at his disciple…

Then at the books he was carrying.

“Qing Yang.”

“There’s no need to hide things from your master.”

“Recently, you’ve been studying nothing but medical and alchemical books.”

“As for the breakthrough manual I gave you…”

“You’ve practically ignored it.”

“What exactly are you planning?”

“Have you given up on breaking through to the Postnatal Realm?”

Lin Yang lowered his head.

He glanced at the books in his arms before looking back at Yu Daiyan.

After a moment’s hesitation, he decided not to hide the truth.

“I wanted to study medicine and alchemy…”

“…to see whether I could refine qi-and-blood replenishing pills myself.”

“You?”

Yu Daiyan’s eyes widened.

He stared at his disciple, momentarily too stunned to speak.

“Qing Yang…”

“Where did you get such an idea?”

“At your age, you probably can’t even recognize all the herbs required to refine pills.”

“On what basis do you think you can make them yourself?”

Lin Yang replied earnestly,

“Master, precisely because I don’t recognize all the medicinal ingredients…”

“…I’m studying these medical texts.”

Yu Daiyan was rendered speechless.

A helpless smile appeared on his face.

“Qing Yang…”

“You’re still just a child.”

“Refining pills isn’t nearly as simple as you imagine.”

“Our Wudang Sect has thousands of disciples.”

“And among all of them, there are only a handful of true alchemists.”

“How could someone your age possibly refine the qi-and-blood pills you want?”

“I’ve already told you before.”

“After reaching the Postnatal Realm, you can cultivate your internal energy gradually.”

“Why are you in such a hurry?”

Lin Yang lowered his head again.

“Master…”

“If taking qi-and-blood pills allows cultivation to progress faster…”

“…then why cultivate slowly?”

“Wouldn’t that simply be wasting time?”

Seeing that persuasion wasn’t working, irritation once again appeared on Yu Daiyan’s face.

After a long silence, he let out a weary sigh.

Had this happened back when all four of his limbs were still intact…

He would’ve already grabbed a staff and broken his disobedient disciple’s legs.

But now…

Confined to a chair with crippled limbs…

His temper had mellowed considerably.

After calming himself, he spoke.

“Fine.”

“Let’s set aside whether or not you’re even capable of refining these pills.”

“Even if Wudang fully supported you…”

“Do you think medicinal pills can simply be eaten without restraint?”

“You should know the saying—every medicine carries some degree of poison.”

“If you consume pills year after year, medicinal toxins will accumulate within your body.”

“Those toxins will gradually obstruct your meridians.”

“When the time comes to open them, you’ll face countless additional obstacles.”

“You’ll turn what should have been a smooth cultivation path into an extremely difficult one.”

“You understand that, don’t you?”

“Of course I understand, Master.”

“That’s exactly why I want to study medicine and alchemy.”

“I want to refine a better qi-and-blood pill.”

Yu Daiyan slowly shook his head.

“So you’re determined not to turn back until you’ve smashed into a wall.”

“Fine.”

“Let’s assume you’re truly a genius.”

“Let’s assume you actually succeed in refining the pills you want.”

“But have you considered this?”

“At your age, even if you possessed an endless supply of qi-and-blood pills…”

“…could your body actually refine all of that qi and blood?”

“The strength of the body’s meridians and acupoints is limited.”

“The amount of qi and blood a person can refine in a single day is also limited.”

“If you endlessly strengthen your qi and blood…”

“…your body won’t benefit.”

“Instead, constantly remaining flooded with excess qi and blood will only cause unnecessary damage.”

“Everything has its limits.”

“Excess is as harmful as deficiency.”

“That is one of the greatest taboos in martial cultivation.”

“I’ve said everything that needs to be said.”

“If you still insist on this path…”

“…then I won’t stop you.”

After speaking, Yu Daiyan slowly closed his eyes.

Looking at his master’s exhausted appearance, guilt flashed across Lin Yang’s heart.

His master truly worried about him more than anyone else.

But…

Lin Yang also had his own path to walk.

Even if Yu Daiyan couldn’t understand it, he had no intention of changing course.

“Master, don’t worry.”

“I know exactly how much qi and blood I can refine each day.”

“And recently…”

“…I’ve improved my internal cultivation method.”

“The speed at which it refines qi and blood has increased dramatically.”

“Now, no matter how much qi and blood my body generates in a day…”

“…I’m confident I can refine all of it.”

“So even if I eventually succeed in refining the pills I need…”

“…they won’t harm my body.”

He patiently tried to explain.

But the moment those words left his mouth…

Yu Daiyan’s eyes flew open.

“What did you just say?”

His voice trembled with disbelief.

“You… improved your own internal cultivation method?”

“Who do you think you are?”

“You’re nothing more than a young Daoist apprentice!”

“You’ve only been cultivating for a few years…”

“…and you dare modify an internal cultivation method?”

The last few sentences were practically shouted.

Powerful internal energy surged from Yu Daiyan’s body, causing the surrounding air to tremble.

The commotion immediately drew Qing Yuan and Qing Liang out of the house.

The two senior brothers froze when they saw the furious expression on Yu Daiyan’s face.

Exchanging nervous glances, they hurried forward.

“Master…”

“Please calm down.”

“Don’t let yourself become too angry.”

“Junior Brother is still young.”

“Even if he’s done something wrong, please be patient with him.”

Yu Daiyan ignored them completely.

His piercing gaze remained fixed on Lin Yang.

Lin Yang’s face turned pale.

He had never imagined that simply mentioning the cultivation method he had improved would provoke such overwhelming fury.

After hesitating for a long time, he quietly spoke.

“Master…”

“I know I was wrong.”

“But… I’ve already been cultivating with the modified technique for quite some time.”

“So far…”

“…I haven’t found any problems.”

“You…”

“You…”

“You!”

Yu Daiyan was so furious that he nearly coughed up blood.

“Do you think just anyone can modify an internal cultivation method?”

“An internal cultivation method governs the body’s meridians and acupoints.”

“It governs the functioning of the internal organs.”

“It governs the operation of the dantian and the sea of qi.”

“Everything is interconnected.”

“Every part affects another.”

“If even one mistake is made…”

“…your entire life could be ruined!”

“Even among the seven of us disciples…”

“…our Eldest Senior Brother—now the Sect Master of Wudang and the one with the deepest understanding of martial arts…”

“…would never casually claim he could improve an internal cultivation method.”

“And yet you…”

“A child who’s cultivated for only a few years…”

“…dared to attempt something so reckless.”

“Worse still…”

“…you actually cultivated using an incomplete internal cultivation method that you created yourself!”

“Your courage truly knows no bounds!”

He turned sharply toward the two disciples nearby.

“Qing Yuan!”

“Qing Liang!”

“Tie him up!”

“Today…”

“I will personally enforce the sect’s rules!”
