Chapter 10: The Abandoned Dormitory’s Secret

Kyoto Rakunan High School boasted a long and storied history, having produced many famous individuals among its graduates.

However, few were privy to a certain secret area within the school, one that no one dared to mention.

The abandoned girls’ dormitory!

It had once been a luxurious dormitory, constructed by the school with a substantial investment.

Yet, it hadn’t been in use for long before a strange incident forced its abandonment.

The specifics of that incident were known only to former students and a select few teachers within the academy.

Now, Teacher Matsui had assigned this eerie task, undoubtedly with ulterior motives.

****

Night, 11:40 PM, in front of the abandoned girls’ dormitory.

Ogiwara Tai sat slumped on the ground, gazing at the pitch-black sky, puffing out clouds of smoke.

Before him, a small mountain of spent cigarette butts had accumulated.

Even after chain-smoking for so long, the nicotine offered not the slightest reprieve from his fear.

Even now, merely looking at the sealed dormitory entrance sent shivers down his spine.

“Boss Ogiwara, why haven’t those guys shown up yet?”

Beside him, Koda Hikari also smoked, their face even paler than Ogiwara Tai’s.

“Damn it! They definitely chickened out!” Ogiwara Tai growled, his expression grim. “Hmph, what ‘death hide-and-seek’? That bastard Matsui definitely has something sinister planned!”

“Uh… Boss, maybe it’s better not to talk like that?”

“Damn it! Is Matsui your dad? Why are you defending him?”

“No, Boss… Look, didn’t Teacher Matsui say that even if he’s not in the classroom, he knows everything that happens there? He seems to have some special ability to know our every move. So… if we talk badly about him behind his back, he might hear us.”

‘Sss…’ Ogiwara Tai gasped, turning his head to scan their surroundings.

Though nothing was there, he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.

Just as he began to dismiss it as his imagination, faint footsteps suddenly echoed from behind him.

“Who’s there!”

He instinctively tried to scramble to his feet, but his legs, usually so nimble, felt like noodles, utterly useless.

From the shadows not far away, two figures slowly emerged, clinging to each other.

Since school had long ended and the area was abandoned, the lighting was poor.

It wasn’t until they drew closer that Ogiwara Tai recognized them as Qichuan Feng and Iwata Noriko.

“Damn it! It’s just you two.”

Ogiwara Tai let out a long breath. Just moments ago, watching those two strange, approaching shadows, he had nearly wet himself.

“You’re only just arriving now? Hmph, I knew you were scared.” Ogiwara Tai sneered. “You only have a little over ten minutes before we have to go in.”

“Hmph, we were just making some preparations.”

Iwata Noriko pulled out a pendant from her neck, showing it off.

“Look, this is an amulet I had a spirit medium master make for me. It can ward off evil and bring me good luck.”

She pointed to Qichuan Feng beside her.

“Feng-chan has one too.”

“Huh? This thing… is it actually useful?” Ogiwara Tai asked skeptically. “It’s not just a scam, is it?”

“Hmph, whether it’s useful or not, you’ll find out soon enough.”

“It’s useful, but only a little.”

A voice suddenly spoke from behind Ogiwara Tai, startling him into jumping as if he’d been electrocuted.

He focused his gaze and realized the newcomer was Bai Yuliang.

“Damn it! You scared the hell out of me! Why do you walk so silently, you bastard!”

“Mm.”

Bai Yuliang didn’t reply, instead looking thoughtfully at the people around him.

After a long moment, he spoke with concern, “None of you brought water or food?”

“Huh?”

The others exchanged confused glances, not understanding Bai Yuliang’s meaning.

“Ah…” Bai Yuliang sighed, explaining, “It seems none of you read the assignment requirements carefully. This assignment lasts for 48 hours. Are you planning to go without eating or drinking for that long?”

At his words, a realization dawned on them.

“Crap, then I need to hurry…”

Ogiwara Tai suddenly froze, looking at the time on his phone, his face instantly turning grim.

“Only five minutes left, it’s too late!”

“Ah…”

Iwata Noriko and Qichuan Feng’s expressions also changed. They had spent all day making amulets and now arrived completely empty-handed.

“It’s fine, I brought some. I’ll share a bit with you.”

It was then that everyone noticed Bai Yuliang was carrying a thick travel bag, looking bulky and seemingly stuffed with many items.

He set the bag down and opened it, revealing several bottles of mineral water, a few loaves of bread, and some papers.

He casually handed the water and bread to the two girls, receiving their thanks.

Even the usually arrogant Qichuan Feng had to offer a ‘thank you’ this time.

“It’s nothing, I just enjoy helping others.”

However, when Ogiwara Tai and his subordinate reached out to take some, Bai Yuliang waved them off.

“Tsk, I don’t have much left. You two will have to figure something out yourselves,” Bai Yuliang said with a look of disdain.

“Figure something out? You want me to figure something out now?” Ogiwara Tai’s face darkened. “Hey, Bai Yuliang, I just saw you had plenty left! What’s wrong with sharing? Didn’t you just say you love helping others?”

“There’s a limit to everything!” Bai Yuliang stated earnestly. “Girls eat and drink less. How can I feed both of you men? If I share with you, what will I do?”

“You—” Ogiwara Tai gnashed his teeth fiercely. “You’re asking for a beating, aren’t you? Do you know who I am? I’m—”

“Only three minutes left, shouldn’t we prepare to enter the abandoned dormitory?” Bai Yuliang completely ignored him and began chatting with the girls.

“Hey! I’m talking to you!”

“Tsk, you’re so annoying!” Bai Yuliang rolled his eyes, feigning helplessness. “Alright, alright, you want water and food, right? I can give it to you, but it’ll cost extra.”

“Ex-extra?”

“Yeah, don’t you have money in your family?”

“I… I… Ah, fine! Fine! Fine!” Ogiwara Tai’s face twitched violently. “How much?”

“Ten thousand yen (approximately 524 RMB) for one bottle of water, ten thousand yen for one loaf of bread.”

Bai Yuliang quoted an exorbitant price, intending to thoroughly fleece this brainless rich second-generation.

“Fine, one hundred thousand yen has already been transferred to your account!” Ogiwara Tai spoke decisively, without any further nonsense. “Five bottles of water, five loaves of bread.”

Holy crap?

Bai Yuliang stared dumbfounded at the deposit notification on his phone.

He had expected to haggle a bit, but this guy just bought it outright?

Sigh… It seemed he had underestimated the capriciousness of the wealthy. He should have added another zero.

“Uh… Boss…” Koda Hikari said with a troubled expression. “Could you… buy some for me too?”

“Do you think my money grows on trees?” Ogiwara Tai, at this point, had no concern for his subordinate, saying mercilessly, “Buy it yourself. I’m out of money anyway.”

Upon hearing this, Koda Hikari’s face showed a hint of despair.

He wasn’t a rich second-generation like Ogiwara Tai; his account barely held any money, certainly not enough to buy anything.

Just as he was about to beg Bai Yuliang for a share, his phone chimed.

[One minute until the mission begins…]

“Hurry inside, or you’ll be punished!”

At these words, the group realized the urgency of the situation and sprinted towards the abandoned dormitory.

However, upon reaching the dormitory entrance, they discovered the door was locked.

“How can this be!” Ogiwara Tai cried out in despair. “Why is there a lock here!”

“The assignment… the assignment only starts once we enter the dormitory…”

“If we can’t get in… we won’t be able to complete the assignment? And if we don’t complete it… we’ll die!”

“No!”

Iwata Noriko, abandoning all pretense of composure, began kicking the door. Yet, aside from loud thuds, it was utterly useless.

[20 seconds until mission begins…]

“So tough… so thick…” Qichuan Feng murmured, sweat beading on her forehead as she stared at the lock. “We… we can’t go on like this…”

Suddenly, she vividly recalled what had happened at noon and looked at Bai Yuliang beside her.

The latter was unhurriedly pulling a toothpick from his pants pocket.

“Move aside, I’ll take care of it.”

He pulled away Iwata Noriko, who had been kicking the door, first using the toothpick to clean his teeth, then deftly inserting it into the door’s lock.

With a few swift twists and a decisive tug, the thick, sturdy lock clattered to the ground.

[10 seconds until mission begins… 10… 9… 8…]

The moment they frantically rushed into the dormitory, the phone’s countdown ceased.

In its place, a profound, low moan echoed in their ears.

[Welcome to, the Death Assignment…]
