Chapter 108: A Lead, A Warning, and a Lingering Curse

The events of earlier still buzzed in their minds.

On the way to the activity room, Lu Yang was still excitedly discussing what they had just witnessed with Qin Xuan.

Xue Li remained quiet, but whereas before she had walked beside Hua Liang, she now strolled close to Su Mian.

Just as they neared the activity room building, Su Mian’s phone vibrated in her pocket.

She pulled it out to see a message from Xiao Moyuan.

[Xiao Moyuan: Where are you?]

It was a simple message, just two words, yet it made Su Mian’s heart skip a beat.

‘Had he sensed something?’

[Sweetheart Marshmallow: Just finished the investigation with club members. Heading back to the activity room to change.]

She deliberated for a moment, then added another line.

[Sweetheart Marshmallow: Ran into something… strange, but it’s resolved now.]

The reply was almost instantaneous.

[Xiao Moyuan: Wait for me at the school gate. I’ll be there in ten minutes.]

Su Mian was momentarily stunned.

‘Why was Xiao Moyuan in such a hurry?’

“What’s wrong, Mianzi?”

Lu Yang noticed her pause to look at her phone.

“N-nothing at all.”

Su Mian quickly put her phone away.

“Well… my friend said they’re coming to pick me up, so I won’t go back to the activity room to change. I’m just going!”

Lu Yang let out an “Oh,” his eyes instantly alight with gossip. “Boyfriend? Could it be Xiao Moyuan?”

Su Mian’s face flushed. “No! It’s another friend! I’m leaving now!”

She dared not say more about Xiao Moyuan.

Moreover, Xiao Moyuan had instructed her not to reveal any information about him during this special period, as it was crucial for re-luring and attracting the supernatural entities interested in her.

She hastily bid farewell to Qin Xuan, Xue Li, and Hua Liang, clutching the change of men’s clothes, and hurried away.

Watching her somewhat flustered retreating figure, Lu Yang rubbed his chin. “Something’s definitely up…”

Qin Xuan pushed his glasses up, remaining silent.

Xue Li’s icy blue eyes followed Su Mian’s departing form until she disappeared around the street corner.

Hua Liang stretched, then leaned closer to Xue Li, chuckling softly in a voice only they could hear.

“How was it?”

“Close contact, how did it feel?”

“Is she still the same person she once was?”

Xue Li withdrew her gaze, casting a faint glance at him.

“The feeling is different.”

“Her personality has changed so much…”

“However, I don’t dislike her this way…”

“A big change is normal, after all, she doesn’t have her old memories.”

Hua Liang stroked his chin.

“It seems our luck is good; we found ‘her’ less than a week after arriving at the university.”

“However, I do think this human club president is also unusual. Despite being just a human, she understands these supernatural events better than some others, and is much calmer.”

“This Supernatural Phenomenon Research Club, its timing feels very subtle. It’s almost as if it was established just for us.”

“Mm…”

Xue Li turned and walked towards the activity room.

***

When Su Mian arrived at the school gate, the familiar black sedan was already quietly parked by the roadside.

She pulled open the car door and slid inside.

Xiao Moyuan sat in the driver’s seat, his profile appearing somewhat stern in the faint glow of the car’s dashboard.

He turned his head, his gaze sweeping over the old school uniform from her university days, finally settling on her face.

“Did you encounter anything today?” he asked directly, his voice sounding more urgent than usual.

Su Mian recounted her entire evening’s experience, from entering the activity room to investigating the old teaching building, and then her encounter in the restroom.

She included the blurry female silhouette and how the entity seemed to react to her aura at the end.

Xiao Moyuan listened quietly, his fingers lightly tapping on the steering wheel.

“The lingering obsession, thought, body… energy able to take form…”

“To be vaguely perceived by the naked eye, the resentment and obsession are not light.”

He analyzed, “But from your description, there was no clear intention to attack, more like an unconscious wandering and plea.”

He paused, then looked at Su Mian. “Its reaction to you might indeed be related to your awakened demon body.”

“Fox demons, especially high-tier ones, possess a natural affinity, and even… an attraction, to entities like ‘spirits’ and ‘thoughts’.”

“For some lost spiritual entities, your aura might be like a lighthouse, drawing them in.”

“Ah!” Su Mian’s heart tightened. ‘Did she have a constitution that attracted such unclean things?’

“That level of residual thought usually cannot be sustained for long. To maintain it, it would need to find something to provide it with energy.”

“And your demon energy, for it, could provide what it needs.”

Xiao Moyuan started the car.

“You might have unconsciously leaked your demon energy at the time, which is why it actively approached you.”

“Then… am I alright?”

Su Mian felt a little panicked, instinctively touching her neck and chest, as if fearing she might have caught something impure.

Xiao Moyuan glanced at her, a faint smile playing on his lips. “This kind of spiritual entity doesn’t even count as a low-tier demon.”

“You are a true demon now. Are you afraid of such things?”

Su Mian’s face flushed, and she pouted, feigning bravery. “Who said I’m scared… I just feel a little uncomfortable, okay?”

“Besides, I only just became a demon, so it’s normal not to be used to these things, okay?”

Su Mian’s voice grew softer and softer. To be honest, she was still a little scared.

Xiao Moyuan didn’t expose her. “Keep the necklace I gave you on. As long as you wear it, malevolent spiritual entities or demons won’t be able to get close to you.”

“But it’s good that you’re fine…”

His tone was calm, yet Su Mian detected an unusual undertone.

‘Could it be that Xiao Moyuan sensed her danger through their contract and specifically rushed over?’

Thinking this, Su Mian felt a warmth spread through her heart.

She had initially thought the contract was restrictive but she hadn’t expected it to be a form of protection.

The car drove smoothly on the way back to the apartment.

Su Mian leaned back against the seat, watching the passing night scenery outside the window, and suddenly asked with curiosity.

“Xiao Moyuan, do you think… among ordinary people, are there some who have particularly strong spiritual senses or know certain things?”

She asked tentatively.

Xiao Moyuan answered very directly,

“Of course there are. In folklore, they’re called ‘yin-yang eyes’ or ‘psychic constitution’. In the records of the Demon Exorcism Bureau, they belong to a group of people with naturally high spiritual sensitivity.

If not guided, such individuals are prone to attracting low-tier spiritual entities and are more susceptible to danger.”

Su Mian nodded thoughtfully.

“By the way,” Xiao Moyuan suddenly spoke, changing the subject. “There’s been a lead regarding your parents’ disappearance.”

Su Mian shot upright, her heart pounding. “What lead? Are they… are they still alive?”

“The demon energy remaining at the scene is very complex; there are signs of a struggle, but no clear… aura of death.”

Xiao Moyuan carefully chose his words. “The Demon Exorcism Bureau’s preliminary judgment is that they might not be mere victims. It’s more like they were… caught up in something, or actively participated in something, and then disappeared.”

“Disappeared? Where did they go?”

Xiao Moyuan uttered two words: “The Mystic Realm.”

“The barrier between the two realms can be temporarily opened or traversed under certain specific conditions, or by beings who possess special methods.

There were faint spatial fluctuations remaining at the place they disappeared.

The Demon Exorcism Bureau is attempting to track and pinpoint their location, but this will take time, and the Mystic Realm is vast and chaotic, making precise location extremely difficult.”

“The Mystic Realm… the world where demons gather.”

‘Had her parents gone there? Were they taken, or… did they go willingly?’

‘What exactly had they been hiding?’

Su Mian’s emotions became chaotic once more.

“What about Baixue? As a demon exorcist, is she involved in the investigation?”

She recalled her sister’s phone call, filled with hatred.

“The branch of the Demon Exorcism Bureau where Su Baixue is located did intervene in the investigation, but she is a newcomer and doesn’t have access to core information. Moreover…”

Xiao Moyuan’s tone grew slightly cold. “She harbors deep hostility towards you, believing you attracted the disaster. For the short term, you’d best not contact her directly, and certainly do not expose your current situation or our relationship.”

Su Mian fell silent. She knew Xiao Moyuan was right.

Baixue wouldn’t listen to any of her explanations right now.

The car drove into the apartment’s underground garage.

Xiao Moyuan parked the car but didn’t immediately get out.

“One more thing.” He looked at Su Mian, his expression turning serious. “Xia has made a move.”

Su Mian’s heart chilled.

“During this time, many girls around N University have still been victims.”

“Once he discovers you’re back at school, he’ll likely make a move on you.”

Xiao Moyuan’s voice was low. “However, he was previously injured by the necklace I gave you, so he should be wary of you.”

“He might still have Shen Zhixia approach you first, or activate other pawns. You must be extra careful when going out recently, and never take off your necklace.”

Su Mian nodded vigorously, her hand unconsciously gripping the pendant at her chest.

Thinking of her childhood friend, still under Xia’s control…

A pang of sadness struck Su Mian’s heart.

The two got out of the car and took the elevator upstairs. Returning to the apartment where she had been ‘confined’ for the past few days, Su Mian surprisingly felt a strange sense of peace.

Though not free here, at least it was temporarily safe.

After entering, Xiao Moyuan first checked the barrier, then added a few hidden warning runes.

Su Mian went to the bathroom to shower and changed back into comfortable loungewear.

When she came out after drying her hair, she saw Xiao Moyuan standing by the living room’s floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the city lights outside.

She walked over, hesitated, and then quietly asked, “How… how is your curse doing lately?”

Xiao Moyuan turned around, looking at her with some surprise, apparently not expecting her to show concern for this.

“Temporarily fine,” he said indifferently, his gaze falling on her skin, which appeared exceptionally fair and clear after her wash. “Thanks to a certain little fox.”

Su Mian’s face flushed, and she averted her gaze. “Who, who cares about you… I just asked casually…”

Xiao Moyuan chuckled softly, his laughter in the quiet living room sounding somewhat alluring.

“Were you scared tonight?” he asked, his tone softening.

“A-a little…”

Su Mian honestly admitted, still feeling a lingering fear as she recalled the blurry female silhouette and the chilling weeping by her ear. “But, it wasn’t as terrifying as I imagined…”

“Most spiritual entities are like that. Born of obsession, be it hate or love, ultimately, they are emotions that cannot be let go.”

Xiao Moyuan walked to the sofa and sat down, patting the spot beside him. “Come here.”

Su Mian hesitated, then slowly moved over and sat down beside him, maintaining a small distance.

Xiao Moyuan didn’t insist, merely tossing a thin blanket onto her lap. “Cover yourself. Don’t catch a cold.”

The simple gesture brought a slight warmth to Su Mian’s heart.

Such subtle acts of care always made her both afraid of him and yet…

“Can I continue researching those supernatural events at school?”

Clutching the blanket, she asked the question that concerned her most.

Tonight’s experience, though frightening, had also made her realize that hiding in the apartment wouldn’t solve anything.

She needed to engage with the outside world, to grow, to uncover the truth about her background and her parents’ disappearance.

And encountering those supernatural events would allow her to understand this world and grow more quickly.

Xiao Moyuan looked at her for a few seconds, then nodded.

“You may. But you must adhere to several points: First, always wear the necklace.

Second, return immediately after school; do not linger outside.

Third, if Shen Zhixia actively approaches you, notify me at once.

Fourth, keep a slight distance from the two transfer students in Qin Xuan’s club; observation is fine, but do not get deeply involved.”

“Why? They… don’t look like bad people.” Su Mian was puzzled.

Xiao Moyuan’s eyes held an unusual depth.

“You mean, their appearance is unusual?”

“Precisely. The timing of those two appearing is off; it’s too coincidental. Moreover, I can’t leave for the university right now, so it’s difficult to confirm their backgrounds.”

“You are currently a focal point; it’s best to maintain distance from anyone or anything that gets too close to you, for both your sakes.”

Su Mian nodded, half-understanding.

She recalled Xue Li’s cool, seemingly all-knowing gaze, and Hua Liang’s probing beneath his cynical smile.

“Then… aside from the Demon Exorcism Bureau, will anyone else come looking for trouble?” This was her biggest worry.

“No,” Xiao Moyuan affirmed. “You are my shikigami, with a formal contract recorded. As long as you don’t actively stir up trouble or expose uncontrollable demon energy, the Demon Exorcism Bureau has no reason to act against you. Furthermore…”

He paused. “The Su family parents’ disappearance case involves a lot, and the Demon Exorcism Bureau’s attention is primarily focused on that right now.”

‘Was this a blessing in disguise?’

Su Mian’s mood was complex.

The night deepened.

Xiao Moyuan did not leave; instead, he rested with his eyes closed on a sofa chair on the other side of the living room, seemingly intending to keep watch through the night.

Spiritual energy slowly circulated around him, forming a faint barrier that both isolated Su Mian’s unconsciously emitted aura, which attracted demons, and remained vigilant for any external disturbances.

Su Mian curled up on the sofa, wrapped in the thin blanket, gazing at the quiet profile of the man not far away.

His features were sharp, his nose bridge high.

Complex emotions surged in her heart once more.

Regarding the fact that she had now completely become a girl, did she still hate him, resent him for it?

It seemed the feeling was no longer so strong.

When she was afraid, helpless, or even, as now, felt a trace of security, the first image that appeared in her mind was still his figure.

And that ‘online relationship’ that had long since changed, along with his words, “Everything I invested was real…”

Amidst her jumbled thoughts, drowsiness gradually crept in.

Clutching the blanket, she unknowingly fell asleep.

Moonlight streamed quietly through the gaps in the curtains.

***

On the other side of the city, at the top floor of a high-end apartment building.

Shen Zhixia huddled in a dark corner, wrapped in a thick blanket, yet she couldn’t stop trembling.

It wasn’t cold, but a weakness and hunger emanating from the depths of her soul.

The mirror reflected her current appearance—her skin had lost its former luster, subtly revealing a grayish pallor, her eye sockets were sunken, her once brilliant eyes dull and lifeless, even… faintly glowing with an ominous red light.

Xia’s punishment for retrieving a portion of his primordial blood was more severe than she had imagined.

Her energy and strength waned, but her craving for blood intensified daily, almost consuming her sanity.

And the subtle aging of her face was a huge blow to her.

Xia’s figure slowly materialized before her.

“To have lost most of my primordial blood and still maintain your sanity, you are better than I imagined.”

Xia’s voice held a hint of mockery.

“Su Mian is back to classes at the university; Xiao Moyuan is not with her.”

Shen Zhixia chose to remain silent.

She already knew about this after speaking with Su Mian on the phone today.

Xia’s seductive voice floated over. “You must be in great pain right now.”

“If you can find a way to make Su Mian remove the spiritual item on her, and bring her to me…”

“Then I will return the primordial blood I took from you.”
