Chapter 70: A Drunken Confession and an Unexpected Rescue

There was only one week left until the National Day holiday.

The evening breeze carried the chill of early autumn, dispersing the smoky aroma that wafted from the barbecue stalls.

The three roommates from Dorm 304 were having dinner at their usual spot, though Xia was conspicuously absent.

“Xia’s probably off on another date with some girl. Mianzi, don’t take it too hard.”

Lu Yang jested, his words muffled around a skewer.

“Who knows? Maybe he’s scouting out some sisters for our National Day mixer!”

Su Mian took a long gulp of ice-cold beer.

She spoke candidly.

“Actually, I feel more at ease when Xia isn’t around. I always feel less comfortable with him than I do with you guys.”

“Exactly!” Lu Yang declared, waving his hand in strong agreement. “It’s always best when it’s just us!”

Qin Xuan sat quietly beside them, methodically eating his grilled eggplant.

His gaze, behind his glasses, occasionally swept over Su Mian’s cheeks, which were flushed from the alcohol, but he offered no opinion.

Su Mian was genuinely overjoyed to have found such a suitable and affordable apartment.

A great weight had been lifted from her heart. This surge of happiness, mixed with a nascent hope for the future, transformed entirely into the potent effects of alcohol.

She had initially intended to drink only one bottle, but with Lu Yang’s boisterous encouragement, she found herself drinking glass after glass, consuming far more than she had planned.

By the end of the meal, Su Mian’s legs felt like jelly, and the world before her began to spin gently.

“Mianzi, are you sure you can get back in this state? Why don’t you just sleep in the dorm tonight?”

Lu Yang watched the dazed Su Mian, feeling a touch of concern.

“Or, you could tell us your address, and Qin and I will take you.”

Su Mian’s remaining shred of rationality instantly snapped taut.

‘Go back to the dorm?’

In her current state, if her sleeping posture was poor or if any clues were noticed during her wash-up, the consequences would be unimaginable.

‘Let Lu Yang and Qin Xuan escort her?’

Female clothes and cosmetics were still scattered in the apartment, not yet tidied away. More importantly, there was no ‘sister Su Baixue’ waiting for her there at all.

She waved her hand vigorously, trying to steady herself.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. I can manage. Just a few more minutes, then I’ll go.”

Lu Yang and Qin Xuan were clearly worried, so they stayed with her, sitting on plastic stools by the roadside.

As the night wind blew, the alcohol’s effects surged even more fiercely to her head.

Su Mian felt her head growing heavier and heavier, and her eyelids began to droop.

“How about we just go back to the dorm?” Lu Yang suggested, rising to help her up.

Qin Xuan adjusted his glasses, offering a reminder. “Lu Yang, Su Mian doesn’t like to be touched.”

Lu Yang paused, scratching his head. “Then what should we do? We can’t just let Mianzi go alone, can we?”

He leaned closer to Su Mian, raising his voice. “Mianzi! How about you call your sister and ask her to pick you up?”

“Okayyy!”

Su Mian reacted a beat too late, suddenly raising her hand in a soft, sweet, almost childish voice, slurred with drunkenness, a playful innocence she herself didn’t detect.

“But… I need to use the restroom first…”

Lu Yang’s eyes instantly widened.

He tugged at Qin Xuan’s sleeve, lowering his voice. “Holy crap! Old Qin, did you hear that? Mianzi’s voice just now… how was it… so much like a little girl?”

Qin Xuan’s expression remained unchanged, his tone as flat as if stating a scientific phenomenon. “When some people are deeply intoxicated, their vocal cord control diminishes, and they may even exhibit an unconscious alternative personality.”

Lu Yang nodded, half understanding, then chuckled twice. “You know, if I didn’t know Mianzi so well, just hearing that sound and seeing that action, I really would have thought it was a girl. Quite cute, huh?”

Qin Xuan didn’t respond further, only a subtle, almost imperceptible glint flickered across his glasses.

Su Mian swayed unsteadily, grabbing her phone and instinctively stumbling towards the restroom.

Her fingers fumbled uncontrollably across the screen, unconsciously dialing a number.

The call was quickly answered, and a low, familiar male voice came through.

“Who is this?”

Su Mian’s mind was a chaotic blur, yet this voice inexplicably brought her a sense of peace. With a thick nasal tone and slurred words, she softly mumbled, “I…”

“I’m your wife!”

Xiao Moyuan on the other end of the line was silent for several seconds.

He had given his private number to ‘Sweetheart Marshmallow’ and had her number saved, but the current caller ID was not either of those.

With a moment’s thought, he understood: Su Mian had two WeChat accounts, so it was natural she might have two phone numbers as well.

His brows immediately furrowed. “Why are you drinking?”

A hint of imperceptible sternness laced his tone. “Didn’t you say you wouldn’t get drunk again?”

“I found a new apartment today! It’s so pretty…”

Su Mian giggled, her logic muddled as she sought praise. “I’m just happy… a little drink… is that not allowed… Hubby, come pick me up quickly… otherwise… otherwise someone else might pick me up…”

Her voice carried the sticky, dependent quality of drunkenness.

“If I get taken away… I’ll definitely be exposed…”

Xiao Moyuan’s fingers tightened around his phone, almost able to picture her current hazy, defenceless state.

He suppressed the emotions surging within him, his voice calm. “Report your location.”

Su Mian, disoriented, slurred out the name of the barbecue restaurant.

Xiao Moyuan, however, used the clues to precisely deduce her location.

Twenty seconds later, Xiao Moyuan’s sleek, hard-edged black sedan pulled up precisely in front of the bustling barbecue stall.

He pushed open the door and stepped out, a stark contrast to the noisy environment around him.

“Old Qin! Look! Even the campus heartthrob comes to places like this?”

Lu Yang spotted him at once, elbowing Qin Xuan in surprise.

Before Qin Xuan could respond, Xiao Moyuan strode aggressively to their table, his gaze sharp as a knife, landing directly on Lu Yang’s face.

“Where’s Su Mian?”

Lu Yang’s heart sank, and he instantly imagined a dramatic scene of ‘a love rival coming to cause trouble.’

After all, Su Mian had gone to trouble Xiao Moyuan recently, so it was entirely possible she had provoked him again these past few days.

He bravely tried to bluff his way through. “I don’t know. She wasn’t with us… Student Su has something to attend to; we can talk about it at school tomorrow.”

Xiao Moyuan’s brows furrowed even deeper, and the atmospheric pressure around him dropped further.

Just then, Su Mian stumbled out from the direction of the restroom.

Xiao Moyuan’s eyes sharpened.

Ignoring Lu Yang, he walked straight over and, without a word, scooped Su Mian into his arms.

“Holy crap!”

Seeing this, Lu Yang’s adrenaline surged.

He lunged forward, blocking Xiao Moyuan, his face openly displaying protective affection. “Xiao Moyuan! This is a lawful society! What are you trying to do? Snatch someone right in front of us? Whatever grudge you have, wait until they’re sober! You need to let them go now! If you don’t, I’m calling the police!”

Xiao Moyuan was momentarily stunned by the shouting, then quickly understood the other party’s misunderstanding.

He looked down at Su Mian in his arms, who seemed to have found a source of warmth, automatically wrapped her arms around his neck, and buried her flushed cheek into the hollow of his shoulder. His expression softened slightly.

At this moment, Su Mian dizzily lifted her head, squinted to identify Lu Yang, and waved with a silly smile.

“Boss Lu… bye-bye… I’m going home…”

Lu Yang instantly froze, mouth agape, looking at the utterly nonchalant Su Mian, then at the expressionless Xiao Moyuan holding her, completely dumbfounded.

“Huh?… Mianzi… d-did you ask him to come?”

Xiao Moyuan bothered with no further explanation, merely uttering a single syllable from his nose.

“Mm.”

He adjusted his hold, ensuring Su Mian was more comfortable, then gave a slight nod to Lu Yang and the silently observing Qin Xuan.

“I’m leaving now.”

With that, he carried Su Mian, turned, and walked towards the black sedan.

He carefully settled her into the passenger seat, fastened her seatbelt, then circled back to the driver’s seat, started the engine, and the car smoothly merged into traffic, disappearing into the night.

Lu Yang stood rooted to the spot, taking a long time to recover.

He suddenly grabbed Qin Xuan’s arm, his voice filled with disbelief. “Old Qin! Did you see that? Did you see that? Mianzi was carried away in a princess carry by Xiao Moyuan! Doesn’t he hate being touched the most?”

‘Just now, she was even clinging to Xiao Moyuan’s neck! What is going on? Weren’t they rivals? This is ridiculous!’

Qin Xuan calmly brushed his hand away, adjusted his glasses, and his voice was as calm as ever. “Other people’s private affairs, meddle less. Go back to sleep.”

Lu Yang stared blankly at Qin Xuan’s unperturbed face, then looked in the direction where the car had vanished, feeling his mind swirl with question marks, which finally coalesced into a long, bewildered, “Damn!”

***

Meanwhile, the car drove along the road to the apartment.

The car interior was filled with a faint scent of alcohol and Su Mian’s lingering, sweet body fragrance.

Xiao Moyuan kept his eyes on the road, driving steadily.

Su Mian, in the passenger seat, seemed to have fallen asleep, her breathing even, only occasionally letting out unconscious whimpers due to the car’s slight bumps.

He drove the car directly to the new apartment Su Mian had found today.

After all, he had arranged this apartment, so he naturally knew its location.

Upon reaching the underground garage, Xiao Moyuan once again carried Su Mian out of the car.

As the elevator ascended, in the confined space, her soft body pressed against him without a gap, her warm breath caressing his collarbone.

Xiao Moyuan lowered his head, looking at her defenseless sleeping face.

Long eyelashes cast soft shadows beneath her eyelids, and due to the alcohol, her cheeks were flushed crimson, her lips more rosy and full than usual.

His gaze lingered for a moment on the familiar necklace around her neck, his eyes deepening.

Back in the apartment, he gently placed Su Mian on the bed in the master bedroom, took off her shoes and coat, and covered her with the blanket.

He didn’t leave immediately.

Instead, he sat on the chair by the bed, silently watching her for a while.

‘This little fox, completely unaware that she found me while using Su Mian’s identity.’

‘Drunk Su Mian was indeed very cute, but also quite foolish.’

‘Though she wasn’t particularly smart to begin with…’

Xiao Moyuan secretly made a decision in his heart: in the future, he would absolutely not allow Su Mian to drink outside when he wasn’t present.

‘This state of hers, it was enough for him alone to see.’

Meanwhile, in an apartment on the other side of the city, Shen Zhixia stood before a floor-to-ceiling window, holding a stemmed glass filled with dark red liquid.

She looked at her cold reflection in the glass, her eyes resolute.

Xia had changed her deadline from one month to ten days.

She recalled seeing Xiao Moyuan carrying a slender figure into a car and driving away the previous evening, an unintentional sight that had acted like the final fuse, completely igniting the hatred and murderous intent in her heart.

‘Ten days would be enough…’

‘That National Day mixer, it would be a good opportunity.’
