Chapter 96: The Drunken Fox’s Accusation

Night was as dark as ink.

As Xiao Moyuan returned to his apartment after finishing his affairs, he keenly sensed an anomaly in the surrounding air.

In the shadows beneath the apartment building, faint rustling sounds emerged. Several pairs of glowing green eyes flickered in and out of the darkness.

Low-level demonic entities—mostly specters driven by instinct—now swarmed the area like ants drawn to honey, refusing to leave.

Xiao Moyuan’s gaze abruptly turned cold.

His slender fingers formed a hand seal at his side. Pure spiritual energy rippled outwards, creating barely perceptible waves in the air.

The demonic entities hidden in the shadows didn’t even have time to wail. They transformed into wisps of green smoke under the impact of the pure spiritual energy, dissipating into the night wind.

Within moments, silence returned to the surroundings.

However, Xiao Moyuan’s brow furrowed even deeper.

Ordinarily, no low-level demonic entity dared approach within a ten-mile radius of him. Yet now, these creatures had gathered here.

They possessed no reason, driven solely by their most primal desires.

Today, Xiao Moyuan had learned that last night, at the very moment Su Mian’s demonic form awakened, a significant disturbance had occurred.

Even though he had promptly set up a barrier to contain the subsequent overflow of demonic energy, it had still caused a considerable stir.

Firstly, it had attracted the attention of the Demon Extermination Bureau, prompting many demon exterminators to rush to N City.

Beyond that, many yokai that were originally active around N City were gradually converging on the city itself.

Coupled with the tragic incident of Su Mian’s parents last night…

At this moment, Xiao Moyuan vaguely sensed that something was amiss.

At the very least, Su Mian’s identity was far from that of a simple half-demon from the Tu Shan clan.

Her demonic energy, her very blood, seemed to be an irresistible temptation for other demonic entities.

From Shen Zhixia, to Xia… and now these low-level demons driven by instinct tonight…

All of it pointed to the same undeniable fact: Su Mian’s bloodline was extraordinary.

He recalled the reaction of the curse within him during his intimate contact with Su Mian. It wasn’t the feeling of being forcibly suppressed, but rather like a violent power being gently soothed.

Her presence, her aura, even her blood, seemed to be the sole antidote to the vicious curse in his own bloodline.

Xiao Moyuan raised his gaze to the lit window of the apartment, his eyes filled with an inscrutable complexity.

‘Just what is this little fox’s true origin?’

***

The moment Xiao Moyuan pushed open the apartment door, a potent smell of alcohol assailed him, causing his brow to furrow instinctively.

The main lights in the living room were off. Only a floor lamp emitted a dim, soft glow, shrouding the room in a hazy twilight.

He gently placed the fresh groceries he had just bought from the supermarket onto the cabinet in the entryway, changed his shoes, and walked into the living room.

His gaze fell upon the little fox curled up on the sofa. She was wearing a clean nightgown, her fair legs bent, and her chin resting on her knees.

Her misty eyes, shimmering with unshed tears, were fixed unblinkingly on the several piles of toppled empty wine bottles on the coffee table.

The pair of snowy white fox ears drooped listlessly, and her fluffy tail was tucked around her side in a rather pitiful manner.

He sighed silently, then walked over and sat on the empty space beside her on the sofa.

As the sofa cushion dipped, Su Mian seemed to finally notice his presence, turning her head a beat late.

Her usually delicate face was now flushed with an alluring crimson. Her eyes were unfocused and hazy, and her lips appeared particularly full and rosy from the alcohol.

“Why did you drink so much?”

Xiao Moyuan lowered his voice.

Su Mian blinked slowly, her reaction delayed. Several seconds passed before she seemed to finally process the information in his words.

Then, like a lit firecracker, she glared fiercely at him. However, her gaze, softened by intoxication, held no menace, resembling that of a tiny kitten instead.

“You… you!”

She extended a slender finger, trembling as she pointed at him. Her sweet, soft voice carried a thick nasal tone and a hint of grievance:

“You locked me in the house…”

She grew more agitated as she spoke, her words quickening:

“And you won’t even let me… let me drink?! You… you’re being unreasonable!”

Xiao Moyuan looked at her, a hint of helplessness in his heart. He reached out and began to clear the messy wine bottles from the coffee table, his tone calm:

“You have a low alcohol tolerance. Don’t you know that yourself?”

Seeing that he not only offered no comfort but also began to remove her ‘source of happiness,’ Su Mian instantly grew even more aggrieved. Her eyes visibly reddened.

“Xiao Moyuan, you… you scoundrel…”

She accused him with a sob in her voice, yet her logic was surprisingly clear.

“Locking me in the house… fine… I… I endured it…”

She sniffled, continuing to list his ‘crimes’:

“You… you didn’t even give me internet… no signal… I can’t even scroll through videos or play games… not even that!”

Finally, she practically screamed the last part in anger, her voice trembling at the end:

“Now… now you actually… actually won’t even let me drink! My wine!”

Xiao Moyuan’s movements paused slightly as he collected the bottles.

His original intention in cutting off her internet was to prevent her from impulsively contacting the outside world and exposing her identity, or from being provoked by harsher words from her estranged sister, Su Baixue.

He had completely overlooked leaving the little fox other forms of entertainment.

Thinking about it this way, her drowning her sorrows in alcohol seemed… somewhat excusable.

He looked at Su Mian, who appeared to have suffered the greatest injustice imaginable. His heart softened again. He gently placed the wine bottle he had picked up back on the coffee table and even took a clean glass, pouring himself half a cup.

“Alright,”

He pushed the glass towards her, his voice softening.

“Don’t cry. I’ll drink a little with you. That’s acceptable, isn’t it?”

Su Mian lifted her tear-filled eyes from her arms, glancing at him suspiciously. A muffled ‘hmph’ escaped her nose, thick with a cold.

“Hmph!”

Though she said nothing, her expression clearly gave her silent consent.

Her mind and heart were so heavy now that she truly only wanted to continue indulging in the brief numbness alcohol brought, to temporarily forget about becoming a demon, her parents’ disappearance, and everything involving Xiao Moyuan.

Several cups of wine later, the alcohol further eroded her already dwindling sanity. The questions and emotions she had suppressed for so long began to bubble to the surface.

She put down her glass, shook her somewhat dizzy head, and tried to focus her vision on the man beside her, whose features remained sharply defined even in the dim light.

“Xiao Moyuan…”

Her voice was soft and slurred with the stickiness of intoxication.

“Do you… do you think I’m particularly easy to bully?”

Xiao Moyuan watched her hazy, drunken expression, a faint smile flickering in his eyes. Yet, he nodded frankly in admission:

“Yes. Very easy to bully.”

Su Mian:

“…”

This blunt and hurtful answer instantly made her bristle. Her tail and ears shot up in anger.

“You scoundrel!”

Furious, she forgot herself. Without thinking, she pounced, grabbing his arm, and bit down hard!

Her sharp little canines instantly pierced through the fabric, sinking into his flesh.

Xiao Moyuan let out a muffled grunt, his brows furrowing sharply. The muscles in his arm tensed instantly, but he stubbornly didn’t push her away. He didn’t even move, simply allowing her to vent.

It wasn’t until a sweet, rusty taste filled her mouth that Su Mian released her bite abruptly, as if she had been burned.

Looking at the clear, blood-tinged teeth marks on Xiao Moyuan’s arm, her drunkenness was startled away a few degrees. She felt both panicked and annoyed.

“You… are you an idiot?!”

Her voice was tearful, urgent, and angry:

“It’s… it’s bleeding! Why didn’t you push me away?!”

Xiao Moyuan lowered his gaze to the wound. With a fingertip, he touched an almost imperceptible spiritual glow to it, and the wound healed at a visible rate, leaving only a faint red mark.

His tone remained calm, as if he hadn’t been the one bitten:

“Letting you vent is good for you.”

It was like this again! This sudden, inexplicable gentleness and indulgence!

Su Mian felt a mix of bitterness and sourness. The alcohol made her even more uninhibited.

“Why… why bother pretending…”

She lowered her head, her voice growing softer, thick with a nasal tone and an imperceptible sadness:

“You… you don’t even like me…”

She lifted her misty, tear-filled eyes, staring at him stubbornly, as if demanding an answer:

“Why… why do you still put on an act in front of me?”

Upon hearing this, Xiao Moyuan suddenly let out a low laugh. His deep eyes seemed particularly profound in the dim, yellow light.

He leaned closer, his warm breath brushing against her sensitive earlobe, his voice a little husky:

“If I didn’t like you, why would I go to such great lengths to keep you in my house? Am I just bored?”

Su Mian’s heart skipped a beat at his sudden proximity and blunt words. Her cheeks flushed even hotter, but her drunken mind stubbornly clung to its own logic.

She puffed out her cheeks, rebutting indignantly:

“Isn’t it… isn’t it to investigate me?”

At the mention of this, she seemed to recall the grievance of being confined, and her emotions surged again. She grabbed his sleeve, speaking incoherently:

“You… you just want to investigate me, don’t you?! I’ll let you investigate… investigate, it’s enough! But… but can you… can you not keep me locked up here…”

Her voice took on a pleading, tearful quality, and tears streamed down her face like broken pearls:

“As long as you… you’re willing to let me go out… let me go back and see… Tonight… tonight, whatever you do to me is fine… I… I’ll, I’ll even cooperate with you…”

As she spoke, as if to prove her ‘sincerity,’ she actually began fumbling to untie her nightgown straps. While undressing, she continued to shed pitiful tears, a sight that was both heartbreaking and innocently alluring.

Xiao Moyuan looked at her awkward and foolish demeanor, truly exasperated.

And then he laughed.

He suddenly reached out, grabbing her restless wrists. The grip wasn’t heavy, but it was enough to stop her actions.

His expression darkened, his voice carrying a hint of coolness and helplessness:

“Su Mian, do you lose your brain when you drink?”

He looked directly into her hazy eyes, asking clearly, word for word:

“If I were truly the kind of person you imagine, the first time when you were drunk, the second time when you inexplicably climbed into my bed at the hotel, the third time when you were staying at my home completely defenseless… With so many opportunities, why didn’t I make a move? Hmm?”

Startled by his shout, Su Mian’s face showed a momentary blankness and silence. She seemed to be trying to process the information in his words.

Xiao Moyuan thought she had finally understood a little, and he breathed a slight sigh of relief.

However, the very next second—

“Waaah—!”

Su Mian burst into uncontrollable sobs without warning. Her wails were truly miserable and pitiable. She cried and accused simultaneously:

“Waaah… you dislike me! You’re yelling at me! You really do dislike me… waaah…”

Xiao Moyuan was stunned by her completely derailed thought process and her instant tears, finding it utterly exasperating yet amusing.

He rubbed his throbbing temples, patiently explaining:

“I don’t dislike you.”

“Then why…”

Su Mian sniffled, persistently pressing her question, her logic once again miraculously circling back.

“Then why didn’t you, investigate, me…?”

Xiao Moyuan: “…”

He was utterly defeated.

The drunken little fox’s mind had no logic whatsoever; she was truly childish, delicate, and clingy.

He gave up trying to reason with her, stood up, and decided to use the most direct and effective method to end the conversation.

“I’ll go make you dinner.”

“After you eat, you’ll go straight to bed. Whatever issues you have, we’ll talk about them tomorrow when you’re sober and clear-headed!”

Having said that, he ignored any potential reaction from the little drunken fox behind him and walked straight into the kitchen.

Forty minutes later, several plates of appetizing home-cooked stir-fries were placed on the dining table. The enticing aroma of food permeated the air.

Xiao Moyuan untied his apron and looked towards the living room.

He saw that Su Mian had, at some point, moved herself to the dining table. She was sitting obediently in a chair, her hands clasped on her knees, like a kindergarten child waiting for dinner.

However, her large eyes were still red, and unshed tears clung to her long eyelashes. She would occasionally let out a small sob, looking both pitiful and adorable.

Yet, when Xiao Moyuan’s gaze fell upon her, the vein in his forehead couldn’t help but twitch again—

The strap of her nightgown, which she had pulled askew earlier, still slid down her arm. Large expanses of fair skin and delicate collarbone were exposed to the air.

The hem of her skirt had also ridden up to her upper thighs from her earlier struggles, revealing a pair of straight, slender, beautiful legs.

She seemed completely unaware of how ‘cool’ and… criminally alluring her attire was at that moment.

Xiao Moyuan took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the inexplicable emotions churning within him, and said in a deep voice:

“Before you eat, put your clothes on properly!”
