Chapter 14: Uncovered Truths in Unexpected Places

He Ting spent the entire weekend without seeing Gu Qiuhang.

It was said that Lin Baohuan had returned to the country. In recent years, he and Gu Qiuhang had invested a great deal of time and effort into developing an online video platform. With Lin Baohuan back, Gu Qiuhang would likely become even busier.

He Ting thought that perhaps he wouldn’t be seeing him much for a while.

Ever since their conversation that night, He Ting had been feeling something strange, like going back to when they were very young, when they relied on each other in a way, when they were each other’s only support.

“Be good, just be good,” he used to say.

On Monday morning, after breakfast, He Ting picked up his schoolbag and went downstairs, only to find Gu Qiuhang waiting there. Seeing him, Gu Qiuhang curved his lips slightly.

“Let’s go together.”

He Ting followed behind him. Noticing that Gu Qiuhang was driving himself, he asked curiously, “Where’s Uncle Chen?”

Gu Qiuhang didn’t answer, only gestured for him to get in.

He Ting got into the car and turned to look at Gu Qiuhang’s refined profile. Sunlight streamed in from the side, tinting his eyelashes gold and giving him a faint warmth.

He Ting smiled.

At that moment, Gu Qiuhang turned his head. Their eyes met briefly before Gu Qiuhang suddenly leaned over him.

He Ting’s eyes widened in surprise. His face flushed as he blurted out, “You-”

Then he shut his mouth in embarrassment, wishing he could bite off his tongue, watching as Gu Qiuhang calmly fastened his seatbelt.

Gu Qiuhang straightened up, amused by his flushed, flustered expression. “What’s wrong?”

He Ting didn’t answer, turning his head to look out the window, though even his ears had turned red.

Gu Qiuhang chuckled softly, the deep, magnetic sound making He Ting feel even more embarrassed, his face practically burning. But after a moment, the corners of his lips lifted ever so slightly.

He often made a fool of himself in front of Gu Qiuhang. Compared to that, this was nothing, he reassured himself.

Gu Qiuhang lowered his gaze, still catching the warm, pleasant scent lingering on He Ting. He rubbed his face before asking, “What did you ask me just now?”

“Huh?” He Ting blinked, then remembered his earlier question. “I was asking… why Uncle Chen isn’t here today?”

Gu Qiuhang started the car, still smiling faintly. “He’s been driving Li Le around lately.”

He Ting paused, then softly said, “Oh,” and fell silent.

In the original timeline, Gu Qiuhang often had Uncle Chen pick up and drop off Li Le. He had almost forgotten.

By the time He Ting arrived, Li Le was already seated. Seeing him, he smiled and greeted him.

Li Le’s smile was bright and sunny, the exact type Gu Qiuhang liked, and the kind of warmth the Gu family lacked. He looked like someone who grew up in a very happy home, the kind people envied.

Li Le smiled shyly. “Your young master is really nice.”

He Ting smiled faintly, offering no comment, just nodding.

It wasn’t until break time, when Li Le got up to go to the restroom, that He Ting noticed something off about his walk.

He hurried over to support him. “What happened to your foot?”

Li Le blinked, then smiled. “You didn’t know? That day Gu Qiuhang came to watch the game. Some girls rushed over to see him, and one almost fell down the stairs. I helped her, but twisted my ankle.”

“Oh.” He Ting nodded in understanding. “Then if you need anything, just call me. I’ll help you.”

Li Le didn’t refuse. As they spent more time together, he gradually began steering conversations toward Gu Qiuhang more often.

He Ting thought that people in love were probably like that, wanting to know everything about the other person.

As long as it wasn’t something private, He Ting answered everything honestly.

He felt there was no need to hide anything, it would just be meaningless. He was here to change Tang Xi’s fate. If he lived the same way as before, calculating and self-deprecating, it would be too pitiful.

He didn’t want that, nor did he think it was worth it.

Even if he liked Gu Qiuhang, he shouldn’t trample on himself. He understood that better than anyone.

After that night, He Ting never came home late again.

Half a month later, Meng Ling officially transferred to X Affiliated High School, joining Class 4 of Grade 1, just a wall away from Gu Donghang.

He Ting repeatedly reminded him to stay away from Gu Donghang and not get involved with their circle.

Meng Ling obediently agreed.

Life seemed calm on the surface—until one day after school, Du An dragged him off to “catch someone cheating.”

Not long after the previous incident, He Ting had helped deliver Du An’s love letter.

But whether intentionally or not, Wang Yuanyuan had slipped the letter into her homework and handed it in.

By the time He Ting found out and rushed to the office, the letter had already been passed from the English teacher to the homeroom teacher.

During class meeting, Du An was dragged out and made to read his painstakingly written love letter aloud, tearfully.

The homeroom teacher sighed emotionally, saying if students could put that much passion into studying, becoming top students would be easy.

Du An had thick skin. Though embarrassed, he got over it quickly.

His philosophy was simple: if you don’t feel embarrassed, then you’re not embarrassed.

But before he could launch a second attempt, Wang Yuanyuan had already gotten together with a senior.

At that point, Du An began to suspect she had deliberately set him up.

Once that thought took root, it wouldn’t go away—it was like a thorn in his heart, itching and hurting at the same time.

Though he had no proof, the feeling lingered.

The matter was almost forgotten—until one day, while visiting a friend in the senior building, Du An overheard the senior talking to Wang Yuanyuan on the phone in the restroom.

He couldn’t hear everything clearly, just caught fragments: “after school” and “Helou Hotel.”

Coincidentally, that hotel belonged to his cousin’s family, so he was fairly certain.

With his so-called investigative instincts fired up, Du An insisted on dragging He Ting along to “catch them in the act.”

He Ting tried to stop him repeatedly, but once Du An got worked up, there was no stopping him.

Afraid something might happen, He Ting had no choice but to stick close to him.

They got into a taxi. Once seated, He Ting caught his breath and looked at Du An, who was full of determination, and couldn’t help but find it a little amusing.

Catch cheating? Who belonged to whom? Even if they really were meeting, what right did Du An have to confront them?

What he didn’t expect, however, was that they really would find something.

Just… not about Wang Yuanyuan and the senior, but someone else.
