Chapter 25: The Scent of Survival

“I should at least eat something.”

If he collapsed like this, that would truly be disastrous.

Moon Hae-min held Bok-deong tightly and forced himself to move.

There were many inns near Seonui Gate, crowded with people at dinnertime.

Among them, Hae-min entered one that seemed relatively quiet.

As soon as he sat on the wooden platform, a young male attendant hurried over.

“One bowl of hangover soup, please.”

“Pardon? What did you say?”

Worried his male voice might give him away, he had spoken too softly.

Reluctantly, Hae-min raised his voice slightly.

“One bowl of hangover soup…”

“Yes. And alcohol?”

“No, that’s fine.”

After the attendant left, Hae-min finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.

‘Disguising myself as a woman… this is the problem.’

More than his appearance, his voice worried him.

No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t make it sound like a woman’s.

It would be best to avoid speaking to others as much as possible.

“Here’s your soup.”

The steaming bowl arrived quickly.

The rich aroma made his appetite stir.

After carefully laying Bok-deong beside him, Hae-min picked up his spoon.

The warm broth slid smoothly down his throat.

More than the taste, he relished the warmth spreading through his body.

Just then, a group of men entered noisily.

“Is this the only place left?”

“No choice. Everywhere else is full.”

They looked like merchants, each carrying large bundles.

They sat across from Hae-min and immediately ordered drinks.

“It’s freezing. At least the alcohol helps.”

“This winter really is harsh.”

“If you sigh, your beard freezes over!”

“That’s nothing. Even your piss freezes!”

“Hey, stop ruining the mood!”

They laughed loudly, unconcerned about others.

“…Hm? What’s that smell?”

“Smell? The pancakes?”

“No… something floral. What flower is this?”

“In this winter? Impossible.”

“It’d freeze the moment it bloomed.”

“I’m telling you, it’s a flower scent!”

One man stood up, sniffing the air.

“…It smells like plum blossoms.”

“There’s not even a weed outside.”

“That’s strange… it really smells like plum… or maybe… an omega’s scent…”

At that, Moon Hae-min froze mid-motion.

“Could be. We’re betas, we wouldn’t smell it.”

“If only you can smell it, then it must be scent.”

“But can scent really smell like plum blossoms…?”

Eventually, his companions dragged him back down.

“Stop overthinking and eat.”

The topic died down, but Hae-min remained stiff.

‘Is… that scent coming from me?’

‘Is this… the ‘scent’ I’ve only heard about…?’

He wanted to check, but doing so would be as good as announcing himself.

He quickly set down his spoon and picked up Bok-deong.

That evening, Moon Hae-min found a more secluded inn.

He rented a room for three days, choosing to stay alone.

Though expensive, it was necessary.

“Ha…”

For the first time, he relaxed.

After settling Bok-deong, he collapsed onto the floor.

‘Is this really my scent…?’

In the enclosed space, the faint plum blossom fragrance became even clearer.

Closing his eyes, it felt as if he were standing beneath a blooming tree.

It had appeared just as suddenly as his awakening as an omega.

‘When did it start…?’

He traced back his memory.

Perhaps around noon… but he hadn’t realized it was his own scent.

“…Could it be…”

A thought occurred to him.

Is it related to the pregnancy?

There had been no scent while he carried Bok-deong, yet it emerged right after birth.

He had heard that omegas don’t go into heat during pregnancy.

Then perhaps not emitting a scent was natural too.

“…What do I do?”

Scent could mean many things, provocation, dominance, temptation.

At this rate, he might attract dangerous misunderstandings.

He sat up abruptly.

“…Ngh.”

He tried to suppress it, tensing his whole body.

But nothing worked.

If anything, the scent seemed to grow stronger.

This is bad…

He bit his lip.

He had to learn control, even if it meant staying awake all night.

“Waaah-!”

Suddenly, Bok-deong cried.

Hae-min rushed to pick him up.

“Bok-deong, Daddy’s here. What’s wrong?”

The baby only cried harder.

“You just ate… your diaper’s clean… are you uncomfortable?”

He shifted his hold, but nothing changed.

Cold sweat formed on his back.

‘What if he’s sick…?’

“Don’t cry…”

No… crying was fine. Just don’t be in pain.

He hugged Bok-deong tightly and gently rocked him.

The cries gradually softened.

“…Are you… sleeping?”

Only then did he realize.

‘Ah… he’s just fussing before sleep…’

Relief washed over him, followed by embarrassment.

‘I didn’t even realize…’

What if next time it was serious?

Raising a child without knowledge was frightening.

For a moment, Song Seol came to mind.

But Hae-min shook his head immediately.

How shameless… to even think of relying on him.

He pulled his cloak over both himself and Bok-deong.

He would do this alone.

Slowly, sleep overtook him.

That night, snow fell quietly.

It covered everything, beautiful and ugly alike.

And Moon Hae-min dreamed.

A dream of life with Bok-deong.

****

The next morning, he woke to Bok-deong’s cries.

“Mm… you’re hungry, aren’t you?”

His movements were already becoming more natural.

After feeding, he gently patted the baby’s back.

Burp.

“Good job, Bok-deong.”

The child was already adorable, and now even more so.

Unable to hold back, Moon Hae-min buried his face against him.

A soft, milky scent filled the air.
