Chapter 57: The Harvest Festival Approaches

“So, for my assessment tomorrow, I just need to go up and cast spells?”

“Yes, that’s generally how it should be.”

Elara’s A-rank assessment had been custom-designed by Sevia, so Elara herself wasn’t entirely sure of the standard procedure.

All the adventurers she had observed today underwent comprehensive assessments, offering no relevant precedent.

Looking around, some adventurers were meticulously observing, seemingly eager to learn.

“Speaking of which, the Harvest Festival is in just three days!”

Hilvyn suddenly recalled this detail. She had even ordered special Harvest Festival outfits for herself and Elara well in advance.

The Harvest Festival, celebrated on August 15th, fell precisely on the second day after the dungeon’s closure. Throughout Hilmeran, people would gather to give thanks to Sera, the Harvest God, Gronnir, the Earth God, and Wind God Hilmellia.

Time had flown by so quickly.

“I thought it was still a while away, but now it’s just a few days left.”

Elara felt as though she had picked up their clothes just recently.

“Number 45, Benjie, please report to the arena for your power assessment.”

As the amplified voice echoed, a stir rippled through the surrounding adventurers.

“This is the first power assessment today!”

“How impressive! If only I could learn high-level magic too.”

“Quick, look, he’s coming.”

Hilvyn and Elara’s gazes also turned towards the entrance.

A brown-haired man slowly emerged.

Upon reaching the center of the arena, he began to unleash his magic.

[Magic Name: Burst Flame (High-Tier)]

[Effect: A searing fireball that explodes again upon hitting its target.]

[Magic Name: Fire Healing (High-Tier)]

[Effect: Heals the caster’s wounds, excluding shattered bones, and provides a certain detoxification effect.]

Especially with the casting of ‘Burst Flame,’ a wave of heat washed over the onlookers, igniting the atmosphere. Admiration and envy filled the air.

“Sister, is the fire around him a defensive spell?”

“No.”

Elara shook her head. The ‘Fire Healing’ spell merely enveloped the body in a layer of flames, which most people would understandably mistake for a defensive spell.

However, she possessed appraisal magic. “That’s a healing spell he’s using on himself.”

“Oh, I see,” Hilvyn redirected her gaze back to the arena. “Sister, you’re amazing! How do you know everything?”

“Well…”

Elara offered no explanation; such a matter could not be adequately conveyed in a few words.

“He’s started using mid-tier magic.”

Benjie then unleashed a series of mid-tier spells, displaying remarkable proficiency and effortless mastery.

It served as an excellent demonstration for Hilvyn.

Hilvyn turned her head, feigning an air of mystery.

“I’ve decided what I’m going to do tomorrow.”

“What will you do?”

“I’m going to be even more impressive than this adventurer!”

Hilvyn’s ambition was to garner even greater cheers.

She wanted to dazzle everyone, bringing honor to herself and to Elara.

“You want to ‘show off’ in front of people?” Elara summarized.

“What does ‘show off’ mean?”

“You could interpret it as using your own strength to earn the shock, admiration, and praise of many people—specifically, all these spectators around us.”

“Yes, yes, exactly!” Hilvyn nodded vigorously.

Elara wasn’t entirely fond of such ‘attention-seeking’ behavior, but if Hilvyn desired it, she would let her be.

After all, the praise from a crowd, it had to be said, was indeed immensely satisfying and provided a strong sense of fulfillment.

“Alright, then I’ll look forward to it.”

“Only a little?”

“I’ll look forward to it immensely,” Elara amended, not wanting to spoil her mood.

As the two conversed, the adventurer’s assessment concluded.

“Sister, I’m hungry.”

“Then let’s go eat.”

The two walked hand-in-hand, leaving the assessment grounds.

After lunch, Elara mentioned it was free time, and Hilvyn expressed a desire to visit Martha’s shop again.

Despite Elara’s slight reluctance, she indulged Hilvyn’s wish, only cautioning, “You are not to try on any more of those clothes with very little fabric.”

As for Elara herself, she headed to the Adventurers’ Guild’s postal service.

She hadn’t collected her mail in nearly four months, so she wondered how many letters had accumulated.

The Guild’s postal service collaborated with official post offices. When sending mail, if the recipient was an adventurer, the letters would be directly routed to the Guild’s postal service upon arrival.

It was a convenience offered to adventurers.

“Codename?”

“Black Rose,” Elara said, noticing the mail clerk was a new face. She added, “International mail.”

“That makes things easier.” The clerk turned and entered a back room, soon returning with a stack of exquisite envelopes.

“Please present your emblem.”

Elara produced her emblem and handed it to him.

“Alright, the total processing fee is 1 gold and 20 silver.”

So expensive! As expected of international mail.

Taking the envelopes, Elara counted them: a total of twelve letters.

An average of three letters a month, truly…

A faint warmth bloomed in Elara’s heart.

Unfortunately…

She still felt conflicted about her identity. If these were from her own family, she would be incredibly happy.

She had been away for five years and hadn’t sent a single letter home, yet letters from her family kept arriving. Even she found it unbelievable; logically, after being out of contact for so long, time should have diluted their affection.

‘Sigh.’

Elara stopped dwelling on it. As usual, she wouldn’t open any of these envelopes, instead placing them all in a box at home.

‘Should I reply to one?’

Elara considered it.

“Do you have any stationery?”

“Yes, we do.”

“I’d like to send an express letter.” Elara had just spoken when she changed her mind. “Never mind, sorry to bother you.”

‘Never mind…’

She turned and left.

Returning to her neighborhood, she decided to check on Hilvyn along the way.

Reaching the end of the alley, she found the tailor shop’s door tightly shut. Elara raised an eyebrow; this was hardly closing time.

That left only one major possibility—Hilvyn was inside, trying on those magnificent but ‘spicy’ clothes again.

‘What should I do… Should I notify the city guards?’

‘But would Hilvyn be upset?’

‘However, Martha truly does seem to be coaxing a girl with limited cognitive abilities…’

While Elara was still deliberating, Hilvyn and Martha rounded the corner of the alley the next second.

“Oh… Sister!”

Hilvyn, spotting the familiar figure, scurried over.

She wore a wheat-colored, fitted dress with sleeves that were loose at the top and tight at the cuffs, featuring multiple layers of off-white ruffles. Without any superfluous accessories, she was adorned only with a silver hairpin.

“How does it look?” Hilvyn stopped and twirled. “Is it pretty?”

“It’s exceptionally beautiful.”

Before the words had even faded, a voice echoed from behind them.

“Little Hilvyn is adorable today too.”

The speaker was the proprietress of the snack stall in the alley, who sold flatbreads and candied fruits.

“Little Hilvyn looks so lovely today.”

“It would look even better if your sister bought you a pair of shoes to wear with it.”

The couple from the shoe shop next to the tailor’s also chimed in.

Whenever Hilvyn came to model clothes, Martha would sometimes parade her around, showing her off. After a few such rounds, everyone in the alley had come to know the delightful Little Hilvyn.

“Oh, thank you, but I have enough shoes at home…”

Hilvyn politely declined.

However, the shoe shop couple were merely teasing her with their words, not genuinely trying to sell anything.

“Next time you want new shoes, come to us for a custom order! We guarantee they’ll be beautiful and perfectly fitted!”

“Okay!”

Elara watched it all with a warm sense of contentment.

She was genuinely happy that Hilvyn was so well-liked by everyone.

“Aunt Martha, I’m going home now.”

“Little Hilvyn is in such a hurry to go home.”

Hilvyn entered the shop, and as she took off the clothes she had tried on, she said:

“Because I want to go home.”
