Chapter 66: The Ice Firework’s Fury

Magic surged around Hilvyn as ice orbs were hurled dozens of meters ahead, kicking up plumes of green dust made from shattered grass.

The superior mechanics of the Ice Firework were evident; it could be pre-stored, eliminating the need for immediate casting.

“Is this that explosive spell?”

Talina’s eyes sparkled. Ever since witnessing the Ice Firework yesterday, she had developed a profound interest in the magic.

“It’s a fusion spell I created myself, called Ice Firework,” Hilvyn explained with a touch of pride.

“You created it yourself?! Bai Zhi, you’re amazing!”

Elara’s brow furrowed subtly. While she appreciated praise for Hilvyn, Talina’s enthusiasm felt a little excessive.

Elara was not in the best mood.

“My sister actually inspired me to create it.”

Hilvyn and Elara exchanged glances, a small chuckle escaping Hilvyn.

“Still, Hilvyn’s talent is exceptional.”

Elara’s mood brightened instantly.

In short order, forty to fifty ice orbs dotted a large, fan-shaped area in front of them.

“Do you need to rest?”

Talia’s concern differed from her sister’s. She knew Hilvyn was a half-elf, possessing more magical power than ordinary individuals, but casting so many fusion spells consecutively surely consumed a significant amount of energy.

Yet, seeing Elara unconcerned, Talia found herself uncertain.

It’s fine, it’s nothing at all.”

“They’re coming.”

Elara and Talia spoke simultaneously.

Within the extremely dense magical dissipations ahead, many new, smaller currents of energy began to emerge.

As they stepped into this dead zone, the Corrupted Amalgamate had already detected the living beings intruding upon its territory. Simultaneously, the monsters within the ‘garlic bulbs’ began to gestate.

Everyone maintained a certain distance, lining up in a single row, awaiting the monsters to burst forth from their shells.

One second, two seconds…

From a garlic bulb, a wolf-shaped corrupted creature emerged. Its dark green, skeletal ribs were visible between its flesh, clearly distinct from mere infected corrupted monsters.

Following the first, a second, then a third emerged, quickly followed by an estimated forty to fifty more, various animalistic monsters charging towards the six individuals.

The Magnolia Squad was poised, ready, simply waiting for the monsters to approach.

Elara appeared remarkably relaxed, merely drawing her blade and observing the front calmly.

“Boom—boom—boom—”

A rapid succession of explosions echoed. The outer region of ice orbs was engulfed in a white and green haze. From within the smoke, monsters continued to charge out, only to be met by another round of explosions, until the sounds finally ceased.

Smoke billowed, obscuring the situation behind it, yet no more monsters burst forth from beyond the haze.

As the smoke dissipated, it revealed a ground littered with monster corpses.

Some were blown into scattered pieces, while others were impaled by numerous ice shards.

“This…”

All four were stunned.

‘Strong! So strong!’

“They’re all dead already?”

The siblings were incredulous, their pre-cast spells halting mid-preparation.

“Bai Zhi, you’re incredible…”

Talina covered her mouth, her pupils constricted in shock.

Even the usually calm and reliable Talia was overwhelmed with disbelief.

Talia began to re-evaluate the power of the Ice Firework. This seemingly simple, unassuming bomb, easy to deploy, possessed such immense destructive force.

She could roughly gauge the monsters’ levels: most were B-rank, with a few A-rank. Yet, the Ice Firework, with half its supply still remaining, had halted such a massive number of creatures.

She had previously thought that since Hilvyn showed no fatigue after casting so many, and required no magic replenishment, the spell might not be particularly powerful.

But the visible devastation was undeniable, and she struggled to find a reasonable explanation.

Hilvyn rubbed the back of her head. This exhilarating feeling was no less satisfying than during an assessment.

“The next wave is coming too,” Elara reminded everyone.

The garlic bulbs closer to the amalgamate also began to hatch monsters, signaling another wave, significantly stronger than the first.

This wave included many mutated corrupted forms, such as long-legged treants and rapidly flowing sludge.

Another round of explosions erupted. The treants let out agonizing shrieks, bursting through the smoke, and limped towards the siblings.

“Here they come!”

The brother placed his hand on the ground, while the sister held her staff forward, and a flowing mass of molten rock emerged from the earth before them.

Elara had just dealt with two monsters that had rushed close using her Dark Arrows, then turned to use her appraisal skill.

[Spell Name: Lava (Fusion)]

[Effect: Generates scorching lava on the ground, capable of short-range impact.]

It was a very basic fire and earth fusion spell, but it required the combined effort of two people to cast. Elara had never before seen a fusion spell cast by multiple individuals.

Controlled by the two, the lava slammed into a treant. The immense mass knocked the treant to the ground, and the lava slowly flowed, covering its body.

After a few increasingly faint roars, the treant lay motionless, its life extinguished.

This wave of monsters depleted all the Ice Fireworks, allowing a few to slip through, which were then easily dispatched by the group.

Hilvyn took advantage of the lull to replenish the Ice Fireworks in front.

The four members of the Magnolia Squad looked somewhat dazed and a little embarrassed.

They were not people with thick skin, and the situation, where they had barely contributed, made them feel rather awkward.

Only four monsters had made it through. Elara dealt with two, and Talia’s group dealt with the other two.

Hilvyn, meanwhile, had likely killed dozens, perhaps even a hundred, monsters.

It was almost too easy. Talia had recently often heard reports of injuries or even deaths during joint subjugation missions. According to their descriptions, missions of the same rank were, at the very least, difficult, if not strenuous.

Yet, this A-rank mission before them saw ninety percent of its challenges resolved by Hilvyn.

What Talia found even more astonishing was that Hilvyn still had reserves of power, producing Ice Fireworks without any decrease in speed.

The final wave of monsters was about to strike. Fruits on the tree trunks burst open, and the monsters within landed on the ground.

These monsters, compared to the previous waves, appeared more lifelike, with complete features, not exposing their ribs.

They moved with extreme speed, charging in one after another.

Hilvyn, having placed more than twenty ice orbs, also raised her staff, poised for action.

As the monsters stepped on the Ice Fireworks, she controlled the ice orbs to explode, maximizing the damage. She also continuously condensed Wind Spears to attack any monsters that broke through the Ice Fireworks.

Those with long-range abilities also displayed their skills, attacking the monsters.

The monsters that made it through were generally moderately or severely wounded, and were eliminated by Elara and Talia working together.

Undoubtedly, Hilvyn’s contribution dominated this final wave as well.

For the first time, the Magnolia Squad felt a mission was this simple; their magic reserves remained at a very safe level.

All that remained was to kill the main body.

As for the underground root system, covered in sharp spikes, the brother among the siblings would handle it.

Elara and Talia were both enchanted with the earth magic, ‘Rock Armor.’

This semi-corporeal defensive magic would undoubtedly be effective against the physical damage of the root system.

Just as Elara and Talia prepared to strike, both halted their steps.

“What’s wrong, Sister?”

As the words left her mouth, Hilvyn also understood why.

“The amalgamate is dead.”

The massive magical dissipations, which had been so potent, simply—

Ceased without warning.
