Chapter 68: The Price of Burning Wings

“Roar~~~~~~~~”

The Bone Dragon’s wings trembled behind it, letting out a defiant roar.

As it did so, its clenched talons aimed squarely at Little Eagle, slamming down with immense force.

Its intent was clearly murderous now, each attack far more destructive than before.

Yet, Little Eagle faced the claw’s deadly gust, merely raising her tattered wings.

She crossed them, forming a shield above her head.

If there was anything particularly striking about this moment compared to previous battles, it was undoubtedly the direction of the falling feathers.

Instead of plummeting to the ground, the crimson plumes now ascended in a reverse trajectory.

They rose from the earth into the air, swirling around the sides of her wings.

The massive, earth-caked claw crashed down heavily.

Little Eagle, however, simply lifted her beautiful face, her expression utterly devoid of emotion.

Not even her body stirred.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The Bone Dragon’s attack landed squarely, unleashing a furious impact that instantly transformed into rippling waves, spreading devastation.

Its rotating dragon eyes fixed on the point where its claw had struck.

The Bone Dragon’s rock-hard face furrowed slightly, as if sensing that things were not as simple as they seemed.

The shockwaves, borne of raw physical might, gradually subsided shortly after.

The dragon cast its gaze forward.

The next instant, its inhuman pupils abruptly constricted.

Directly before its astonished eyes, Little Eagle’s figure still stood tall.

Unlike before, a dozen or so feathers now encircled her slender form, fluttering like strands of silken hair.

The Bone Dragon could barely comprehend it.

Those feathers had somehow blocked its attack, but why?

Its limited intellect seemed incapable of grasping such a phenomenon.

“You’re not so impressive after all!”

Observing her opponent’s astonished reaction, Little Eagle propped up a wing, covering her mouth as she let out a scoffing laugh.

The tip of the wing, near her crimson lips, had inexplicably turned white, a stark contrast to the dominant brown of her other feathers.

The moment her laughter ceased, Little Eagle’s face grew chillingly cold, her expression heralding the arrival of a different kind of winter.

A biting cold instantly swept out in all directions.

No words were needed.

Little Eagle simply willed more feathers to detach from her wings, shedding a significant number at once.

This action served as a signal; shortly after, she herself unleashed an astonishing surge of magical power.

Sub-dragon species, of course, could not possibly understand.

After all, this was a combat technique that only the Harpy tribe could wield with such mastery.

[Burning Wings]:

This was a secret technique that integrated life force into feathers, forcefully enhancing one’s own power.

Upon activating this technique, the user’s feathers would turn a deep white, appearing as if all their color had been burned away, hence the name.

Since ancient times, Harpies had been able to perform this secret technique from the moment of their birth.

It was as natural as breathing for them, requiring no effort to wield.

However, all those connected by blood to the Harpy tribe strongly rejected using [Burning Wings].

This combat method was akin to fighting with one’s life on the line, sacrificing life force in exchange for a fleeting moment of power.

Had she been unharmed, Little Eagle’s strength could have more than doubled.

But now, with little life force remaining, her own power was incomparable to her usual state.

Therefore, what she was doing at this very moment was merely trying to restore as much strength as possible.

Like a moth drawn to a flame, Little Eagle had thrown caution to the wind, risking everything.

She was certain she had gone mad, to be so utterly reckless.

This was not her usual character.

While protecting her companions was an instinctual reaction, sacrificing her own life for them still felt like an unfavorable trade.

Cherishing one’s own life above all else was the normal mindset.

Especially for demons, who feared death and clung to life, nothing in this world was more precious than their own existence.

That should be right…

Yet, Little Eagle still made this ‘foolish’ choice, and for no other reason than a certain person’s face appearing in her mind.

Before activating [Burning Wings], Little Eagle had carefully considered something:

If that person were here, what would they do?

That person’s beliefs were incredibly stubborn.

They would fight with everything they had for their comrades, even if it meant sacrificing their life.

Yes, that person would definitely do it!

Thus, the answer became clear.

Little Eagle now understood what absolutely had to be done.

If that person’s choice was to prioritize the lives of their family above all else, then so be it.

In that case, Little Eagle could also make the weight of that person’s wish surpass everything she herself possessed.

Little Eagle had found peace, convinced that the ‘foolish’ reason she’d settled upon was enough to persuade the selfish heart within her.

Thump~

Thump-thump~

Thump-thump-thump!

In an instant, her heart began to beat faster and faster!

In a daze, Little Eagle felt as if she had traveled back in time.

The young girl searched across the desolate land.

This was a location somewhere on the Eastern Continent.

The demon faction, whose fearsome reputation would later echo across the central continent, had once traveled through here.

Although the girl had heard on her way here that this region had suffered a terrible famine, with everyone capable of moving fleeing to other lands…

Upon actually arriving, she was still shocked by the ruins before her eyes.

Collapsed houses and ravaged fields were everywhere.

It seemed that “man-made disaster” had inflicted more damage here than any natural catastrophe.

It seemed she had come to the wrong place.

The girl wasn’t here for leisure.

She needed to find food and bring it back for everyone.

Forget satisfying her picky companions, who only ate meat; not a single vegetable leaf was visible here.

People, it seemed, truly took everything useful with them when they moved.

The girl had always lacked patience.

She figured there was no food anyway, so staying here was just a waste of time.

“Let’s go, let’s go! Before I run into a pack of wolves or other beasts, I should get out of here quickly.”

The girl ruffled her feathers, intending to give the surrounding ruins one last glance before departing.

This decision to take one more look would later fill her with regret.

For this place wasn’t truly empty.

In a seemingly vacant spot, a small figure stood.

It looked like a person.

Curiosity didn’t just kill the cat; it could also bring trouble to a “bird”!

On a whim, the girl impulsively walked forward, approaching the spot.

She hadn’t been mistaken; there was indeed a person standing there.

It was a child, barely taller than a bean sprout.

It was a boy, appearing to be only seven or eight years old.

To call him “tender” wasn’t quite right; “tiny” was a more fitting description.

Yet, precisely because he was such a small child, his presence in this desolate, uninhabited land was all the more bewildering.

Driven again by curiosity, the girl crouched down.

She looked up at the boy, unable to resist asking him, “Where are your parents?”

The boy didn’t turn his head, nor did he look at the girl.

He simply replied in a weak voice, “Father and Mother told me to wait here.”

With just that one sentence, the girl understood that this fool had been deceived.
