Chapter 79: A Bat’s Gratitude

Chloe spun through the air like a headless fly, letting the cold wind slap against her face.

She was a bat—a pathetic little bat, without limbs, only a pair of wings.

She had maintained this form for nearly an hour now, and she felt like crying but no tears came.

Still, there was an advantage: it made her hard to spot.

Alice, Anna, and Una crouched low as they moved through the wheat fields, not daring to move a muscle, not even daring to breathe, afraid of being discovered.

Andrew’s manor was in chaos; guards had surrounded the area completely.

Fortunately, flying gave her a good vantage point.

Chloe wanted to shout, “Someone’s here!” but she couldn’t speak. So she circled to indicate guards ahead: one circle for one guard, two for two. Ahead were nearly six guards, so she spun six times.

The guards were watching the only path; they had to be lured away, or they would be discovered eventually.

Alice understood immediately. She signaled for the others to stay put and walked forward alone.

Chloe led her to where the guards were stationed. Alice crouched in the grass, ready to chant a spell.

Just then, the guards moved away, leaving only one on duty. Alice confidently snapped her fingers, and the guard fell to the ground.

Suddenly, another guard appeared behind her. He drew his sword and was about to swing at Alice’s head.

‘No!’

Chloe dove at the guard with all her might, flapping her wings to obstruct his vision. Distracted, the guard dropped his sword.

“Damn bat!”

Alice picked up the sword and slowly thrust it into his chest.

She looked at Chloe, saying nothing.

Chloe led the three past Andrew’s encirclement, finally reaching a safe area. Alice was exhausted; she sat on the ground, sweat on her forehead.

“Little bat, you worked hard. Come down.”

She grinned, while Una and Anna waved vigorously beside her.

That smile looked infuriating to Chloe.

‘I’ll peck you to death,’ she thought, and dove at Alice at high speed. Alice opened her arms, as if she had anticipated Chloe’s move.

Crack.

Smoke rose around Chloe. Her wings turned into arms, long legs, familiar sensations flooding back—she had turned human again!

But she was still in the air.

Fear instantly replaced joy. She flailed her arms like a frog trying to stop her dive, but to no avail.

Chloe crashed into Alice’s arms, pushing her to the ground. Silver strands of hair fell across Alice’s face.

Alice’s beauty was undeniable—a typical blonde beauty, her slightly youthful face exuding maturity and reliability, with a little dust like makeup.

For some reason, Chloe found herself daydreaming about such an Alice.

Her cheeks flushed red. She quickly tried to stand, but Alice grabbed her arm.

“Thank you.”

Their eyes met—crimson and emerald intertwined. Alice’s red lips breathed faintly, and Chloe wanted to seal them with a kiss.

Chloe leaned in again, a delicate tension floating between them.

“Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-Lady Chloe! What are you doing?” Una exclaimed, face bright red.

Anna quickly covered her mouth and said displeasedly, “Don’t ruin their fun!”

The delicate atmosphere vanished. Chloe quickly stood up, brushing dirt off her clothes. She pulled Alice up, Alice’s face slightly red, as if still savoring the moment.

Chloe had always seen Alice as a leader and elder, but now… a new feeling had sprouted.

This inexplicable sensation filled her heart. She shook her head, trying to push the thought out.

Suddenly, Alice took Chloe’s hand and smiled radiantly.

“Let’s… go meet up with Anjie and the others.”
