Chapter 83: The Blush and the Pounding Heart

Lilith still remembered the looks people gave her when she said, “Then His Majesty the Demon King should go personally.”

Lilith always came up with strange ideas. As a succubus, her kind was known for “watching the show,” after all.

Yet, to her surprise, Lamia actually agreed to her suggestion: for him, the Demon King, to go himself.

Initially, many demons around them deemed it inappropriate, especially Orlan’s faction. Typically, the Demon King would never refuse Orlan’s words, but…

It had always been this way.

But that time, for the first time ever, the Demon King refused.

He no longer yielded to Orlan’s proposal; instead, he truly exercised his own “will” for the very first time.

Lilith still recalled that day. After suggesting her ridiculous idea, she had simply watched the spectacle with a smirk, her small succubus tail swaying behind her like a content kitten.

Kaze stood beside the Demon King. In his demonic form, he was slightly shorter than the black-armored Demon King.

His flame-wrought cape swayed with his breathing, making his presence appear formidable. He stood resolutely by the Demon King’s side.

He glared in Orlan’s direction, looking as if he could, at any moment, punch the Great General, who always had the most to say, squarely in the head.

That demon, who was nearly as tall as the Demon King himself.

The tips of his pointed horns glowed with unsettling red patterns, and the red halo behind his head emitted a low hum.

It was a sound bordering on pure rage, but in the end, he merely snorted, exhaling a plume of white air from the corner of his mouth.

He said nothing, simply turning to leave. The clatter of his armor echoed through the hall, and his heavy footsteps suggested a silent acknowledgment of the Demon King’s actions.

It was also a wordless warning: ” ‘I advise you to handle this yourself.’ ”

‘Now, it seemed, oh, isn’t this just delightful?’

‘Our Demon King is actually blushing at a man’s words, just like a maiden experiencing her first crush. What could be more delectable?’

‘And the White Knight—doesn’t he usually seem so formidable? How can such a grown man blush so profoundly, even covering his face with his hands?’

[My heart… my heart suddenly sped up…!]

Wade was still breathing, or rather, taking deep breaths. His ragged breathing nearly obscured Lamia’s inner thoughts. However, his mind, sluggish from confusion, subconsciously assumed the heartbeat Lamia spoke of belonged to him.

His own heart was indeed pounding, his emotions violently twisting within him. If he were some young girl, he might have already squatted on the ground, covering his face and whimpering.

Such profound shame wouldn’t arise from mere pretense; this was genuine emotion… and it was difficult to face and fully accept.

If those lines had been spoken merely to humor Lamia, Wade would never have reacted this way.

‘—This has only been a few days? Not even a month, has it?’

Just recently, he had been muttering in the carriage, “Why won’t this demon just die already?” But now… now he was…

Wade looked at Lamia with shame, observing her pursed lips and her incessantly blinking eyes, unsure if it was nervousness or panic.

The blush on her cheeks made the corners of her eyes flush as well, along with her crimson pupils. Were these physiological tears brought on by her emotions? Wade noticed her eyes were brighter than before, and his own reflection shimmered within them.

[Hmm… Strange… Why is my heart pounding so fiercely, and my legs turning to jelly, just from seeing him blush and hearing his words…?]

Upon hearing these thoughts, Wade finally understood.

The heartbeat mentioned in her thoughts wasn’t because she heard his, but because her own heart was pounding just as fiercely as his.

‘….No, what even is this?’

‘He was a human male, nearly thirty, facing a demon who was likely hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. And here they were… both of them, one heartbeat faster than the other?’

‘What was happening…!’

Moreover, when Wade noticed his own reflection shimmering in Lamia’s eyes, his heart pounded even faster.

‘If this continued… would he even be able to breathe—!’

“Um… the restroom.”

So, with a decisive move, Wade stood up. He was somewhat reluctant to ask Lilith for help, so, his face flushed with embarrassment, he turned his head to look at Kaze, who was behind the bar.

“Straight ahead to the left, there’s a sign.”

Kaze didn’t ask further, simply and honestly pointing out the restroom’s location to Wade.

“Alright, thank you, thanks.”

Wade nodded, then quickly, almost as if fleeing, left the bar and headed to the restroom around the corner.

“Oh, he ran away, did he?”

Lilith watched Wade’s hurried retreat, finding the sight all the more delicious.

‘This fellow isn’t just anyone. This is the White Knight, who has consistently caused considerable distress for the entire Demon King’s Castle in battle reports.’

‘Logically, a person like him, considered an elite among humans, shouldn’t be swayed by such trivial romantic entanglements.’

‘In their demonic imagination, this White Knight was surely powerful and wise, someone capable of suppressing one of the most ancient and aberrant forms of chaos.’

‘A powerful and indifferent human, that’s how he should be to stand at the pinnacle of strength.’

‘Useless emotions should be cast aside, with all his energy dedicated to seeking even greater power.’

‘But now, it seems even the White Knight is just an ordinary man after all.’

‘And the kind who acts like a young boy just experiencing his first love.’

Lamia, of course, wasn’t thinking so much, for she herself didn’t understand what these so-called emotions truly were.

She was merely experiencing physiological reactions within her body: a pounding heart, blushing cheeks, increasingly rapid breathing, and legs turning weak from agitation.

She only knew that this body, a complete fabrication of human physiology, was undergoing such peculiar responses.

Yet, she wasn’t entirely clear on the reason behind these reactions.

She possessed these feelings, but she couldn’t comprehend them.

‘What is ‘like’? Is this ‘like’?’ She wondered, yet she didn’t know that this very word represented her current situation.

Lamia didn’t even notice that Wade’s hurried departure was akin to an escape. She simply watched him, dazed, as he ran toward the restroom.

“Lilith.”

After Wade’s figure vanished, she turned to look at Lilith, who stood behind her.

For the first time, she appeared somewhat bewildered, cupping her own cheeks with both hands.

“Is this human body of mine… sick? It seems to be having some strange reactions.”
