Chapter 91: A Peculiar Peace and Persistent Pranks

Another day passed, perhaps a little too peacefully.

Perhaps it was due to the recent bloodshed and terror, but as this day slipped by in such tranquility, Wade lay in bed feeling a slight unease, unaccustomed to the quiet.

Lamia still lay beside him, as she always did.

Wade would often remind Lamia that a private room had been prepared for her, suggesting she could sleep alone, that the double bed didn’t need to be so cramped, and there would be no need to contend for blankets. Yet, every single time, Lamia would invariably make her way to his side, claiming his bed as her resting place.

Eventually, Wade grew accustomed to it. He grew used to opening his door and finding someone waiting for him on his bed, to having a person with a not-quite-human body temperature warm his sheets, and to the faint, lingering scent of Lamia that enveloped him each time he lay down.

Life was ordinary; not every day brought explosive events.

Before he met Lamia, Wade’s life was also quite ordinary. While he was busier than most, it wasn’t a constant deluge of chaotic incidents.

By day, he managed affairs at the Knight Order, occasionally visiting the church to chat with Wade’s grandfather, or attending tedious meetings. Evenings were spent at home, enjoying a meal and resting well, preparing for the possibility of having to ‘work’ again in the dead of night.

Thankfully, demons didn’t emerge every single night.

These demons, whose origins were unknown, never launched large-scale attacks or conducted widespread purges. They appeared sporadically, terrifying people with their presence, yet they were surprisingly timid, fleeing at the mere sight of a human.

It was peculiar, as only Lamia could see and touch this particular breed of demon.

Everyone else saw nothing but heard a gust of wind.

Wade had even commissioned an investigation into this phenomenon, ultimately concluding that these demons existed solely to frighten.

Unlike other demons who killed, these particular ones did nothing but instill fear in the dark.

Thus, Wade dubbed them ‘Scare-Ghosts’.

Furthermore, these Scare-Ghosts possessed another unique characteristic: they only appeared in the dead of night.

As he had mentioned earlier, he was currently residing in a large house.

In front of the house lay a street, flanked by a residential area.

The Scare-Ghosts exclusively haunted the residential district.

However, Wade found it rather strange that these Scare-Ghosts hadn’t been seen in the residential area recently. Instead, they had begun appearing inside his own home.

Moreover, these Scare-Ghosts had transformed. They were no longer shapeless entities accompanied only by the sound of wind, as they once were.

Now, Lamia could see them, and Wade could hear them.

The two of them simply referred to them differently.

Lamia called them ‘Little Darlings,’ while Wade still referred to them as ‘Scare-Ghosts’.

Though Wade found these Scare-Ghosts somewhat peculiar, he didn’t dwell on it.

After all, Scare-Ghosts only frightened people; they never caused harm.

In fact, their appearance had even added a touch of amusement to his life.

At the very least, upon waking, he could chat with Lamia about what amusing antics the ‘Little Darlings’ had been up to.

Or perhaps, discuss who the ‘Scare-Ghosts’ had managed to spook.

Lately, however, he found himself somewhat perplexed by these Scare-Ghosts.

Each time they appeared, it was only within his house, and they would persistently pester him, preventing him from resting.

They even uttered strange words.

“Wade, you can’t continue like this. Don’t you know you’re dying?”

“Wade, are you truly not afraid of death? Do you know what it feels like to die?”

“Wade, wake up. Don’t you realize that if you keep this up, you’ll eventually become a monster?”

Hearing these words, Wade felt a pang of discomfort.

He suspected these Scare-Ghosts were cursing him.

Still, he didn’t take it to heart.

After all, Scare-Ghosts only frightened; they never harmed.

Furthermore, each time they appeared, they merely spoke these words, never inflicting any actual damage upon him.

Wade, therefore, simply regarded them as mischievous children.

However, these children’s pranks were becoming a bit excessive.

A sporadic few would emerge from unknown places, disturbing human life in the dead of night. However, whenever they attempted any mischief, Wade would appear, halting their actions and preventing them from causing destruction or harming anyone. In this manner, he consistently maintained the balance of human society.

Most residents remained oblivious, unaware that demons roamed their town at night.

****

A night of peaceful sleep.

There were no troublesome demons, and Lamia simply slept beside him.

As usual, Wade rose early, enjoyed his breakfast, then donned his uniform and headed to the Knight Order for his regular duties.

Lamia, meanwhile, continued to indulge in her deep slumber, as if she could never get enough sleep in a lifetime.

Wade’s daily routine was highly structured, and Lamia’s was much the same, though her predictability stemmed from her unfamiliarity with typical human activities. She simply acted based on what she already knew.

A normal person would likely have other hobbies, perhaps going shopping, buying things, or attending social gatherings.

But Lamia was different. She had no such hobbies, or rather, she considered them to be activities without much meaning.

Buying things? No, she had no need.

She already possessed all the clothes she needed, prepared for her by Lilith. They had been at her previous home, where she maintained her disguised identity, and she had gradually moved them to Wade’s house after settling in.

Those garments would last her for a very long time: clothes for all four seasons, along with the necessary undergarments for changing. Lilith had long since prepared all these items for her.

Moreover, the servants in the mansion occasionally purchased clothes for her. She merely had to select from catalogues or instruct them to prepare some fashionable contemporary styles. For the rest of her time, simply staying within the house was sufficient.

Sometimes, she would visit Lilith.

This had essentially become a part of her behavioral pattern; if she went out, she wouldn’t visit anyone else, only Lilith’s coffee shop.

This was hardly incomprehensible, as Lamia’s only friends in this society were Lilith and Kaze. Therefore, whenever something came up or she simply wished to wander, she would go there.

From time to time, she would inform them of the latest developments in her relationship with the White Knight.

However, most of these ‘developments’ were merely everyday romantic occurrences.

They ate together, strolled in the back garden together, and even planted a few flowers in a small basket side-by-side.

Their lives were so utterly mundane, so typical of ordinary people, that no one would ever suspect they were the White Knight and the Black Demon Lord.

It was astonishing that two individuals with such resounding titles lived such simple, unassuming lives: tending to flowers, enjoying the breeze, occasionally purchasing new records to play on the phonograph, and listening to the latest popular human tunes.

Wade had even invited Lamia to attend an opera with him – though it wasn’t an overly enthusiastic invitation, primarily because he had acquired two tickets.

These tickets had been issued by the Knight Order, a perk, they claimed, for married gentlemen.

Lamia went along, but the inevitable outcome was that she fell asleep almost as soon as the singing began, finding the performance rather ordinary. The opera concluded with the final notes of the singers.

Wade, on the other hand, didn’t sleep, yet he hadn’t truly listened to the songs either. His attention was entirely fixed on Lamia’s sleeping face beside him, observing the subtle expressions that flitted across her features as she slept. He watched her jolt slightly, roused by the music during a climactic part of the plot, then squint her sleepy eyes at the stage before twisting her neck and drifting back to sleep.

Had Lamia been awake then, she would surely have heard Wade’s very soft, quiet chuckle.

By the time Lamia awoke, the opera had concluded. She yawned with satisfaction, stretched languidly, and followed Wade out of the theater with the rest of the crowd.

When Lamia inquired about the opera’s plot, Wade would smile, pull out the theater’s promotional brochure, and read the synopsis aloud, explaining the story to her.

Why didn’t he explain it himself? Because, of course, he hadn’t listened at all; his entire attention had been on Lamia.

After listening, Lamia would respond with a thoughtful ‘I see,’ but it was likely that she still couldn’t fully grasp the profound depths of love and hatred described.

In this manner, their simple cohabitation had continued for over a month. For a recently acquainted couple, a month might mark the earliest stages of a romance, but for Lamia and Wade, their interactions were akin to those of an old married couple.

Lamia would proudly commend herself internally, [‘As expected of me.’]

And Wade would think to himself, [‘It seems my influence on her is working.’]

However, neither of them would likely ever admit to anything resembling ‘love at first sight’.
