“And flowers…it’s peonies. Pale yellow peonies. Out of that entire bouquet, that was her absolute favorite.”
Wade sat in the three-person office with the Vice-Commander and Commander. A subtle seriousness etched itself onto all three of their faces.
“Blue, Lamia’s favorite color.”
A peony, the one flower Lamia cherished most from the bouquet Wade had given her.
“…So, are there blue peonies?”
The Commander looked at Wade, as if trying to merge the two concepts.
“No, no, Commander. Based on my wedding experience, the main color scheme should be blue, with flowers as decoration…”
Vice-Commander Valen sketched a simple diagram in his notebook. He used solid blocks of color to represent blue and lighter shades for yellow. His artistic skill brought their discussion to life on the page, making the concepts more tangible.
“Ah, you young folks always have such elaborate ideas. Back in my day, weddings weren’t this complicated. Your sister-in-law and I just found a decent little chapel, invited our relatives and friends, and held a small ceremony. Everyone ate, chatted, and that was it.”
Commander Jeffrey chuckled with delight as he observed Valen’s work.
Jeffrey wasn’t actually young; his children were small because he and his wife had started their family later in life.
Jeffrey had always been the type to be consumed by his work. In his youth, he had risen through the ranks from an ordinary knight in the squad. It wasn’t until his career stabilized that he considered having a child with his wife.
Perhaps it was more accurate to say they waited until they had enough money to support a child before they welcomed their little daughter.
Jeffrey’s circumstances hadn’t been particularly good back then, so he had long grown accustomed to a simple way of life. When it came to romance, there was none. His tenderness leaned more towards that of a straightforward man.
Thus, upon hearing the two colors, his first thought wasn’t about coordination but simply presenting blue flowers, using this clear and direct method to express his care.
Valen, however, being a younger man, possessed a more active mind. He was exposed to fresher ideas and was around Wade’s age. This was precisely why Jeffrey had specifically brought Valen along, convinced he would be a great help to Wade.
“If the general colors are settled, I’ll start contacting vendors to purchase the necessary decorations. As for fresh flowers, I’ll wait until the wedding date is finalized before procuring them. Otherwise, they’ll wilt by the time the ceremony begins. I’ll secure the order slots for now.”
Procurement wasn’t strictly Jeffrey’s responsibility, but he felt compelled to assist. Therefore, he decided to leverage his authority as the Commander of the Knights’ Order to expedite the booking of wedding-related items. His title, he reasoned, held some sway.
“As for clothing, Brother Wade, you and your wife will have to decide together. Important items like wedding gowns and suits must be chosen by the individuals themselves. They need to select them and get measured—I happen to know a few excellent bridal shops. I can give you their contact information and addresses so you can check them out when the time comes.”
Valen had only recently held his own wedding, still a newlywed himself, so the intricacies of wedding planning remained fresh in his mind.
He tore a sheet of paper from his notebook and jotted down the address of a bridal shop, along with the owner’s name.
Considering he was the Vice-Commander of the Knights’ Order, such memory and intelligence-gathering abilities were only natural.
“Oh, Wade, don’t be so nervous.”
Wade’s hand visibly trembled as Valen handed him the piece of paper.
He truly appeared quite tense, his anxiety clearly etched on his face. After all, he was in front of two old friends, so there was no need for pretense.
“Marriage is a big life event, but there’s no need for it to scare you this much. Just let things unfold naturally. You know your wife loves you, and you love your wife. That’s enough.”
Jeffrey clapped Wade on the shoulder, his broad palm applying a reassuring pressure that helped settle Wade’s nerves slightly.
“Mm…”
Wade’s expression was somewhat subtle, but in the eyes of the other two, it was easily interpreted as nervousness.
Only Wade knew, however, that his heart had quivered when Jeffrey uttered the word ‘love’.
‘Does Lamia love me?’
‘Do I love Lamia?’
Wade was momentarily lost, almost dazed.
He knew, of course, that marriage was supposedly founded on mutual love, but their union hadn’t stemmed from being in love.
Yet, facing his two old friends who genuinely cared for him, Wade could only disguise his true feelings as mere nervousness.
“I was incredibly nervous at first, constantly worrying if I’d mess up the wedding, or if I’d make a fool of myself. But what I was truly most worried about was crying too dramatically at the wedding.”
‘Crying?’
Valen’s words were clearly meant to divert attention and help Wade relax a little.
“Yes, crying. I was a blubbering mess just during the rehearsal. My wife saw my tears and started crying just as hard—it was quite an embarrassing memory. But the staff told me that almost every couple who comes to the wedding venue sheds tears…Honestly, if you asked me now why I cried like that, I couldn’t really say. Perhaps it was memories, memories of all the little moments since we met, memories of the details in our lives, memories of finally reaching that…oh, I can’t quite put it into words.”
Valen reminisced, a light gradually filling his eyes.
In short, it was a very complex emotion, so complex that you didn’t even realize what was happening before your tears were already flowing.
****
‘Past?’
‘Memories?’
‘Details?’
‘No—I shouldn’t be like that.’
Wade sighed inwardly as he listened to Valen.
‘I can’t cry, because I don’t have any beautiful memories of our time together…We had a flash marriage, a three-hour speed run. Our only prior memory is the battle at the entrance of the Demon Lord’s castle.’
‘A normal person…would never cry over such memories.’
