Chapter 113: Nightly Comfort and Unseen Threats

Another night arrived, much like the previous ones, Lamia and Wade lay in the same bed.

Wade had always been troubled by one aspect of sleeping. Because… he and Lamia shared a blanket, she would inevitably tug it away at night.

Lamia’s body temperature was slightly lower than that of a normal human, so she felt colder. In the Demon Lord’s city, she should have adapted to such low temperatures, but upon arriving among humans, Lamia began to experience human ‘warmth.’ Wade was surprised to discover that Lamia preferred warmth. Despite living in a region of low temperatures, her nature was to seek warmth. Whenever something slightly warmer came her way, she would move closer. During their usual interactions, Wade could sense this trait in her. She always liked pulling Wade’s hand, not for any other reason, but to let his warm palm envelop her cold fingers. She would also mischievously scratch his palm with her nails, poking at the calluses on his hand.

Wade, however, was never unhappy about this. How could he be?

When Lamia covered both her hands with Wade’s palm, he was more than happy. But at night, Lamia would always steal the blanket. She would wrap herself up like a sandwich, feeling warm but leaving Wade without a blanket to cover himself.

Recently, the weather had been mild, but as time passed, the nights grew colder. Although the temperature was still bearable, Wade sometimes woke up. When he opened his eyes, groggy from sleep, he would find that his blanket was gone, replaced by a caterpillar-like Lamia—who was also lying on top of him. Her sleeping posture was peculiar; she would curl up, wrapping herself tightly, and then lean against Wade.

Wade’s body was warm, not just his palms. When night fell, Lamia would not only take the blanket but also press tightly against Wade, sometimes lying directly on his chest, making it hard for him to breathe. Other times, she would be on his arm, or he wouldn’t even know how she managed to sleep. The next morning, Wade would wake up to find his legs numb, only to realize that Lamia had been lying across them, her lower body dangling off the bed, almost falling off. This would startle Wade, who would quickly reach out to pull her, along with the blanket, back up. Although he knew she wouldn’t be hurt by a fall, he still reacted urgently.

*Sigh*

Looking at Lamia sleeping on his chest, Wade let out a sigh—perhaps it was because he was pressed for breath, so he took a deep breath and exhaled.

Lamia was sleeping peacefully, her breathing soft and steady. She lay quietly on Wade’s chest, her wavy purple hair spread across him, acting as a warm fur blanket of sorts. Wade had mentioned this before, suggesting they use two blankets, as they did when Lamia first moved in, with one blanket each, and there was enough space by the bed. However, Lamia disagreed, insisting that a husband and wife should share one blanket, lying side by side, not apart, as that would feel distant and lacking in intimacy.

Wade had initially thought this made sense, so he agreed without much thought. Looking back, he wondered what had possessed him to agree to Lamia’s suggestion. Nevertheless, it wasn’t too cold, just a bit uncomfortable.

Lamia’s arm was pressing down on Wade’s. He slowly pulled his arm out, unsure of where to place it, so he rested it on Lamia’s body, giving the appearance of wanting to pull her closer. Since his hand was already on Lamia’s back, he gently patted her, not to wake her, but in a soothing manner, as if calming a child to sleep.

They didn’t have children yet, but watching his own actions, Wade felt as if he were practicing how to put a child to sleep. If one day he and Lamia had a child—would he be taking care of both a small and a large child? After all, Lamia was not human, and there were many things she didn’t understand or know. For Lamia, many human things were new and unfamiliar—wasn’t it similar to encountering a newly born child? So, would he be holding a child in his left arm and embracing Lamia with his right? It didn’t seem so bad, actually.

Wade imagined the scene briefly in his mind. He had initially planned to make some joke, but instead, he felt a sense of happiness. He suddenly understood what his friend had said to him before. Thinking about holding a child in one arm and embracing his wife with the other, life was just about the everyday chores, even if there were conflicts, the happy moments were certainly worth cherishing.

—?

Just as Wade was about to imagine more about their future life as a family, he suddenly sensed the presence of the Demon race.

His life had been peaceful lately, sleeping through each night without disturbance, even if he woke up due to the blanket issue, he would soon fall back asleep. But today, he felt a familiar magical presence. He had thought Lamia had suppressed these activities, preventing the Demon race from causing trouble among humans, but after so long, they had reappeared.

However, upon closer thought, it seemed that Lamia’s authority as the Demon Lord had been undermined… These Demons were likely not sent by her, and she probably didn’t know about their actions yet.

He needed to take action.

Although he had been playing the role of Lamia’s husband, he was still the White Knight. He gently patted Lamia’s hand, slowly extracting himself from her embrace. He carefully arranged Lamia, placing a pillow under her head. Then, with a light push, he opened the window and, just like before, jumped down.
