Chapter 17: Ambush

[“Good afternoon~” the little bat assistant greeted Lin Yu first, then couldn’t wait to pop up a new task. “Task: Raise Bai Lanlan’s affection to 40. Upon completion, reward: one Blood Clan Transformation Card and 10 ancient gold coins.”]

“What’s a Blood Clan Transformation Card?”

[“It lets you transform into a blood clan member. As for the specific effects, you’ll understand once you finish the task.”]

“Fine.”

[“Oh right, you can now click on a character card to see what your possessed target has been up to lately. Any intel they obtain will also be recorded.”]

“Let me take a look.”

Lin Yu opened Bai Lanlan’s character card and found two new buttons: “Recent Status” and “Intel.”

— Bai Lanlan’s Recent Status,

1:  “The death match still isn’t over, and Senior has disappeared again. I never got the chance to thank him properly.”

2:  “Senior, I ate the Blood Pool Fruit, but the effect wasn’t as good as I imagined. My bloodline concentration didn’t improve at all. Is there something wrong with my bloodline?”

“Today a few blood clan members who used to extort me came to apologize on their own, and they even gave me a lot of compensation… It’s all thanks to Senior!”

3:  “Senior, I’m about to set off for the royal city. I’ll arrive in the Night Kingdom a day early, and go see Her Majesty the Queen tomorrow.”

“Senior, did you know? I think about you from time to time now…”

****

Every line of Bai Lanlan’s recent status mentioned “Senior” without fail. Lin Yu felt an unexpected warmth rise in his heart. No one had ever remembered him like this before.

Then he clicked on Magical Girl Tianxing’s character card to check her recent status.

— Magical Girl Tianxing’s Recent Status,

1:  “I’ve been possessed by some strange person. Are they male or female? Human or an extraordinary being? Or maybe a Calamity? I don’t know. What should I do? Should I report it to DIAB? But… that person helped me solve a problem.”

2:  “Catching fish-people is really boring. If it weren’t for the good bounty, I wouldn’t bother coming.”

“I thought about it, and tonight I’ll go find Lin Yu to talk about being possessed.”

****

“Magical Girl Tianxing wants to come find me tonight?”

Lin Yu was stunned for a moment. Aside from work hours, he’d basically never seen Magical Girl Tianxing. He rarely even ran into her around DIAB, since they weren’t in the same department.

“If she finds out I’m the one possessing her, will I get beaten half to death?”

Just thinking about it made Lin Yu shake his head with lingering fear. Then he clicked the “Intel” button on Bai Lanlan’s character card.

— Bai Lanlan’s Intel,

Blood Pool Fruit: tasty.

Demon Hunter blood: good to drink.

****

“Is this really the kind of thing that needs recording?”

Lin Yu curled his lip.

[“Eh? It doesn’t?” The little bat assistant seemed surprised, and covered its mouth with a bat wing, looking a bit embarrassed.]

“Let’s just look at Magical Girl Tianxing’s intel instead. She lives in modern times, and she’s an extraordinary being, after all.”

— Magical Girl Tianxing’s Intel,

The biggest difference between extraordinary beings and extraordinary creatures.

An extraordinary being’s attributes generally won’t exceed A-rank, and the higher the rank, the harder it is to improve. However, raising an extraordinary being’s extraordinary level is fairly easy. There are plenty of examples of humans advancing from D-rank to S-rank within ten years. Their growth speed is extremely fast.

Extraordinary creatures are the opposite. They generally have extremely high attribute values. Some types are born with B-rank attributes, and improving them further comes easily. But correspondingly, raising their extraordinary level is extremely difficult. Even in hundreds of years, they might not advance a single level.

****

As a logistics staff member, Lin Yu normally had no access to intel about extraordinary beings.

“Well, it’s still useful intel, I guess.”

‘Since extraordinary beings and extraordinary creatures each have their strengths and weaknesses, what about Calamities? They not only have high base attributes but also grow fast. And there are so many kinds of them, spread everywhere… They’re the common enemy of humans and extraordinary creatures.’

[“You can possess Bai Lanlan now.” The little bat assistant reminded him.]

“Okay.”

Lin Yu clicked Bai Lanlan’s character card. The familiar void space appeared, and the scene before his eyes began to change.

Dusk. The sun was about to set. A caravan of five horse-drawn carriages was traveling along a forest path, surrounded by tall trees.

It seemed to have just rained. The water pooled on the road made an already difficult path even bumpier.

Bai Lanlan sat inside a carriage in a white dress. The girl lifted a corner of the curtain and admired the scenery outside, her eyes full of anticipation.

“Mister, how much longer until we reach the Night Kingdom?”

The old coachman sitting in front counted on his fingers, then answered, “About three more hours.”

“Okay.”

“Little girl, first time going to the Night Kingdom?”

“Yes.”

“A lot of people hate the blood clan and call them vampires. But we don’t think that way. Every one of them is filthy rich. As long as we deliver this shipment, we won’t have to worry about food or drink all year.”

The caravan had set out from a human town, carrying bottled blood, perfume, livestock, and other popular goods, bound for the Night Kingdom to trade with the blood clan.

Bai Lanlan had spent one gold coin to catch a ride. She’d been sitting since this morning, and now they were finally almost at their destination.

Besides, once the sky went completely dark, she could use the blood clan’s exclusive extraordinary ability, “Bat Transformation,” to fly to the Night Kingdom. She wouldn’t even need to keep following the caravan.

Just then, the carriage ahead suddenly stopped. Bai Lanlan sensed something was wrong too. The sound of some creature running echoed through the forest.

“Something’s going on! Guards, dismount!”

“What is it?”

“Something’s approaching us!”

“They’re coming!”

In the darkness of the forest, something was moving fast, surrounding the caravan where it stood.

Six guards raised their spears. Their bodies were trembling, but they didn’t flee. They gritted their teeth and stood in front, shielding the caravan’s carriages behind them.

“Awooo!”

A wolf howl broke the silence, and two more howls rang out around them at the same time.

“Damn it, werewolves!”

“What are they doing here?”

Just then, a werewolf burst out of the darkness and sank its teeth into a guard’s neck.

“Aaahhh!”

A shrill scream rang out. The guard struggled uselessly a few times, then went still.

“Fresh meat!” The werewolf licked its lips, eyes full of greed.

“Go to hell, you beast!”

Two guards thrust their spears forward. But how could they match a werewolf’s strength? They were knocked to the ground in an instant.

“Hand over the blood clan member in your caravan, and we’ll let you go.”

The lead werewolf stepped forward, looking down at the trembling crowd in the caravan.
