Chapter 27: Tentacle

“Wang Jiaxin’s mother, please don’t harass the other students.”

The female teacher at the podium reminded her with a dark expression.

“Ahaha, how is this harassment?”

The middle-aged woman waved her hand and turned around, looking a little embarrassed.

This was the status a DIAB staff member held in ordinary people’s eyes. They were also highly sought after in the blind date scene. After all, in a world full of Calamities, having a relative who was a government employee meant one more layer of security.

In reality, without awakened superhuman abilities, even a DIAB staff member was not much use. If they really encountered a Calamity, they would only learn how they would die a little earlier than ordinary people.

About five minutes later, Lin Yu arrived at the classroom. Bai Tao stood up obediently, pulled out the chair, and motioned for her brother to sit.

“Why do I feel like they’re all staring at me?”

Lin Yu asked in a lowered voice.

“It’s just your imagination.”

Bai Tao didn’t want Lin Yu to know she often brought him up in front of her classmates. In her stories, Lin Yu… could blow a Calamity’s head off with one punch. He was practically a superhero.

Still, the surrounding chatter inevitably reached Lin Yu’s ears.

“Is that a DIAB staff member? He’s so handsome in those clothes!”

“I heard he once fought a C-rank Calamity alone!”

“Wasn’t it B-rank?”

“The version I heard was clearly A-rank.”

“You’re behind the times. Yesterday it evolved into S-rank!”

“If only I could marry him!”

“Mom, what are you saying? Dad isn’t dead yet.”

“Who’s your mom? From now on, call me older sister. Remember… I’m still single.”

‘What is all this?’

Lin Yu frowned and shot a serious glance at Bai Tao standing to his left. He knew his little sister must have said something. Because of her, the entire class knew he worked for DIAB, and the rumors had grown more and more absurd.

“Ahaha…”

Bai Tao scratched her head, embarrassed, and was momentarily at a loss for words.

Just then, seeing everyone had arrived, the teacher turned on her portable voice amplifier, cleared her throat twice, and motioned for everyone to look at the slides on the screen.

“This is a presentation I made myself. I will analyze the children’s situations from different angles. Please listen carefully.”

The parent-teacher meeting continued.

The sky seemed unable to hold the weight of the thick clouds any longer. Scattered raindrops fell slowly, and in an instant, it was pouring outside the window.

No one noticed that a manhole cover on campus was pushed open by something.

A security guard walked toward the guard room under an umbrella.

The moment he passed the manhole, a tentacle made of countless exposed muscles reached out and grabbed his ankle.

“Who’s there!” The guard cried out and turned around. He saw the tentacle with suckers, thicker than a human arm, and was instantly terrified out of his wits. “W-what is that!”

“A monster! Aaaaah!”

A scream rang out, but it was drowned by the rain.

Lin Yu, sitting in the classroom, twitched his ear. He seemed to sense something wrong and instinctively looked out the window. Rain pelted the glass, making it impossible to see anything clearly.

‘Just my imagination?’

But then.

“Ah!”

A girl in the classroom suddenly screamed.

“What’s wrong?” Her mother beside her asked, confused. She scolded, “The teacher is still giving the lesson. Why are you screaming? Are you trying to cause trouble?”

“I-I saw it!” The girl pointed out the window, lips trembling, body shaking. “O-outside the window, something is moving!”

“What thing?” The mother stood up, walked to the window, wiped the glass with her hand, and stared outside for a while but found nothing. She looked at the girl angrily. “Do you need a beating?”

“Crack!”

The sound of breaking glass rang out. The rainstorm poured into the classroom. A small blood-red fleshy ball jumped in and bounced twice on the floor.

Lin Yu’s right hand was already pressed against his waist.

Everyone gasped and looked terrified, pointing behind the mother.

The mother turned her head mechanically and saw a giant tentacle. The muscles on its surface writhed constantly, covered in fine suckers. Thick liquid dripped continuously from the suckers, leaving wet marks on the floor.

“Aaaaah! Mon…”

Before she finished speaking, she was dragged by the tentacle into the rain. The classroom was silent for a moment… then it exploded into chaos.

“M-monster!”

“What is that thing!”

“Help! Call DIAB!”

“What’s the hotline number? 91 what was it?”

The small fleshy ball on the floor shook its head and flew up. It was an eyeball covered in many small tentacles. Its pupil had split open, revealing countless sharp teeth.

“Gugugaga!”

It charged at the crowd.

Just then, a bullet hit it and killed it instantly.

After all, it was only a byproduct of a Calamity, not even D-rank.

People looked toward the gunshot. The moment they saw Lin Yu, they smiled as if they had been saved.

“Great, it’s Bai Tao’s brother, the DIAB staff member!”

“With him here, we’re sure to be saved.”

“Save my mom… please, save my mom!”

Lin Yu glanced at the girl, then shielded Bai Tao behind him. Holding his gun, he warily watched the tentacle that appeared and disappeared in the rain.

‘I don’t know what rank this Calamity is, but with that size… if I don’t use the vampire transformation card, I probably can’t handle it as I am.’

“Go hide on the top floor, and call DIAB’s hotline!”

“Yeah, everyone hurry upstairs!”

“If we get high enough, that thing definitely won’t be able to reach us!”

The parents pulled their children and ran wildly down the corridor, trying to get higher. Lin Yu signaled Bai Tao to follow. He would hold the rear.

After watching everyone go upstairs, Lin Yu had just turned around when the tentacle arrived. It reached in from outside the window. Its massive body rushed at Lin Yu, and the enormous force instantly destroyed all the desks and chairs in the classroom.

Lin Yu hurriedly leaped aside. The tentacle slammed into the corridor railing, smashing a large hole in it.

Bai Tao looked back at Lin Yu worriedly.

“Keep going up. I’m fine.”

“Mm.”

After confirming Lin Yu was safe, she obediently followed the group upstairs.

“Bai Tao, can your brother handle it?”

“Yeah, can he really beat that tentacle?”

“It’s fine. I already called DIAB. I hope he can hold out a while longer. Once reinforcements arrive, we’ll be saved.”

Bai Tao looked downstairs, her eyes full of worry.

‘Brother… you can do it.’

At that moment, Lin Yu was struggling with the tentacle. Several not-too-serious bruises had appeared on his body.

“Damn, what overbearing strength.”

You had to know that Lin Yu was currently equipped with an A-rank strength card. Even so, he was still at a disadvantage in a contest of strength.
