Chapter 147: Almost There — The School Gate

Just a little farther now — the school gate.

Su Xiaoxiao pretended to be calm as she blended into the crowd of students hurrying toward school.
But from the corner of her eye, she kept nervously scanning the faces around her.

Evran followed quietly behind, covering her mouth to hide a stifled laugh.

It was rare to see Su Xiaoxiao acting so cautious and timid.

Being noticeably shorter than most of the third-year students,
she actually blended in more easily among the crowd —
which finally let Su Xiaoxiao breathe a small sigh of relief.

Good. So far, everyone seemed like interstellar players —
no one had noticed her existence yet.
Just push straight through the crowd and make a beeline for the classroom.

But as she walked… something felt off.
Normally at this exact time, the gate would be flooded with students pouring in.
Today, though… the entrance was strangely wide open and empty.

Her small stature usually made it easy to go unnoticed —
but it also meant she was at risk of being accidentally bumped into.
Yet somehow, not a single person had blocked her path the entire way.

Gradually… gradually…

Su Xiaoxiao’s footsteps began to slow.
Her small hands tightened around the straps of her backpack.
Her shoulders trembled faintly.

The atmosphere…
something was definitely wrong…

She raised her head and looked forward.
In one glance she could see straight to the guard booth at the gate.
At some point, the crowd ahead had unconsciously parted —
forming a straight, clear path leading directly to the entrance!

Everyone seemed to move aside on instinct.
The moment they noticed the silver-haired girl beside them —
face like peach blossoms, skin fair and delicate, movements graceful and refined,
exuding the restrained elegance of a proper young lady —
they instinctively stepped back a little farther,
standing to the side, staring blankly at her retreating figure.

A student walking ahead felt someone tap his shoulder.
He turned and saw the grand “path of honor” forming behind him.
Though he didn’t know why,
upon seeing such a beautiful girl appear at the school gate,
a certain literature-loving boy silently recited in his heart:

“Her smile blooms like flowers, tender and lingering;
her features flow like water — how can one not be endlessly captivated?”

Su Xiaoxiao’s steps grew slower and slower.
She should have been rushing forward with wind beneath her feet,
but now the constant stares pinned her in place —
she couldn’t move.

This… this is bad.
Of course something like this would happen.
Silver hair is way too eye-catching.
Why can’t it change color like my pupils…?

Evran… Evran…?

Huh!? Where’s Evran?!

The stares from all sides made Su Xiaoxiao’s face burn hot.
She wanted to turn around and ask Evran for help —
only to discover that the girl who had been right behind her moments ago…
was gone.

“Ah! She turned around! She looked at me!”

“No way — you don’t even know her.
She’s probably just looking for her friend.”

“Friend? Come to think of it, there was another girl walking with her earlier…
but everything happened so fast I didn’t get a good look.
Where’d she go?”

She turned back and didn’t see Evran —
but she did hear many students behind her whispering excitedly.
Some faces looked vaguely familiar —
probably students from neighboring classes she’d seen in passing.

Su Xiaoxiao felt deeply awkward.
She forced a polite smile,
then quickly turned forward again.
In her heart she cursed Evran endlessly —
why was that girl never around when it actually mattered?

Fine.
Relying on her was my mistake anyway.
Guess I have to handle this myself —
just walk straight through under everyone’s stares.

It’s fine.
They’re just looking.
Once I’m inside the school building, I can hide.

To Su Xiaoxiao, the smile she wore was just a way to ease the embarrassment.
She had no idea how devastating it was to everyone else.

Even as an honor student,
such a trivial situation made Xiao Ran frown in frustration.

A certain boy clutched his chest tightly,
feeling as though love itself was suffocating him.

Her long silver hair cascaded like a waterfall,
seemingly sparkling under the light.
With every step it swayed gently left and right —
impossible to look away from.

Su Xiaoxiao kept blinking rapidly.
Her long lashes fluttered like tiny butterfly wings.
Her heart pounded wildly in her chest.

Oh my god…

Being stared at by so many people… is this embarrassing?!

Especially when she was in this girl form —
being a girl was already hard enough,
and now she was being watched so intently.

Skirtskirt — is the skirt covering everything properly?
I’m not flashing anyone, right?

The clothes are thicker and more conservative than usual —
should be fine, right?

No holes in the stockings, right?
Right now every inch of exposed skin felt unbearably shameful.

And — and walking — she had to be careful.
If she tripped and fell right now…
a huge crowd would instantly swarm over,
bombarding her with questions.
She wouldn’t be able to escape even if she wanted to.

While everyone was still dazed,
she had to hurry to the classroom.

Why are you all still staring?!
I don’t even have boobs — what’s there to look at?!
Go to class already, you idiots!
Don’t you have the college entrance exam to worry about?!

Ah — that beauty standing at the gate has pretty big boobs,
and she’s wearing super sexy black stockings —
if you want to stare, go stare at her—

With that thought,
Su Xiaoxiao’s own footsteps came to a halt.
She stared blankly at those black-stocking-clad legs… lost in a daze.

Whoa… so pretty…
A sudden wave of admiration rose in her heart.

No, no, no — why did I stop walking?!

She lifted her gaze —
and upon closer inspection,
realized the black-stocking beauty at the gate looked… kind of familiar.

Wait… isn’t that Hua Ruolian?!

Come to think of it, she’s in the student council too.
Is she on gate duty today?

Hua Ruolian had clearly noticed Su Xiaoxiao from afar.
The moment the crowd parted to form the path,
all her attention had locked onto the silver-haired girl.

Su Xiaoxiao hadn’t noticed earlier.

Now, as she drew closer to the gate,
Hua Ruolian stepped forward,
slowly approaching until she stood right in front of her.

The instant she saw Hua Ruolian walking straight toward her,
a cold sweat broke out down Su Xiaoxiao’s back.
Before the other girl could even speak,
she squeezed her eyes shut,
waved her hands frantically in the air,
and shouted:

“I’ll go finish the Chinese homework right now!
Really, really — I’ll do it immediately!
I’ll turn it in before the end of first period!”

Probably because of a guilty conscience,
the moment she saw Hua Ruolian,
Su Xiaoxiao instinctively reacted this way —
completely forgetting for a second
that she was now a girl and the other party wouldn’t recognize her.

Hua Ruolian looked visibly confused,
but quickly smoothed her expression.
She hugged the student council registration form to her chest,
leaned slightly forward,
and asked gently:

“Little friend, which school are you from?
Are you wearing your uniform?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before.”

“You’re the little friend!
Damn it — I feel kinda pissed being treated like a kid.”

Only third-years had morning classes today,
so being asked was normal.

She’d just have to stick to the identity Xiao Zi arranged for her.

“Um… cough. Hello, classmate.
I’m a new transfer student in third year.
I’m not a little kid — I’m… seventeen this year.
I’ve been drinking Wangzai milk for ten years already! (crossed out)”
