Chapter 43: The First Victory

They had won their first victory.

The celebration wine flowed.

That night.

The camp was silent.

Yan Wangchen stepped out of Ji Xiao’s tent and headed toward the latrines. Midway, he spotted a solitary figure sitting by the training grounds, faint sobbing sounds drifting through the air.

He paused, then changed direction.

Wei Yan looked up, eyes blurred with tears, and choked out, “General.”

“What are you crying for?”

Despite the cold, hard expression on Yan Wangchen’s face, Wei Yan couldn’t help but feel a warmth in his heart. “I miss home. I don’t know if my mother has given birth to a little brother yet.”

Perhaps it was because Yan Wangchen had spoken up for him a few times, allowing him to follow and avoid punishment. Wei Yan had come to know him as a man with a cold exterior but a warm heart.

And so he couldn’t help but pour out his anguish.

Yan Wangchen said, “If we calculate the time, it will likely be more than two months before your mother gives birth.”

Wei Yan stood up, wiped his face, and stared at him with pleading eyes. “Will my parents still recognize me?”

Yan Wangchen looked down at him slightly. Wei Yan had grown darker and sturdier, but his face was still remarkably handsome.

“They will.”

Wei Yan’s eyes reddened, and he suddenly threw himself into Yan Wangchen’s arms. “Wah!”

Yan Wangchen froze.

Ji Xiao leaned against the shadow of a tent, a cigarette dangling from his lips, watching the two figures that seemed to embrace with an indifferent gaze.

Black Cat: [Doesn’t it feel like you’re seeing your ex and your current together?]

Ji Xiao took a deep drag and exhaled slowly. [Don’t insult Ziyan, and don’t underestimate A-Chen either.]

Black Cat: […]

Ji Xiao: [He’s just a kid.]

Over there, Yan Wangchen grasped Wei Yan’s shoulders and pushed him away. “Don’t be so clingy and weepy.”

Wei Yan: “I was being discreet. No one saw.”

“Then suit yourself.”

Yan Wangchen turned to leave.

“General,” Wei Yan couldn’t help asking, “You and His Majesty… are you willing?”

Yan Wangchen spun around, his gaze icy.

Wei Yan was startled by his look. “I… I didn’t mean to eavesdrop…”

Yan Wangchen was about to speak when footsteps sounded behind him.

Wei Yan’s face turned pale.

Ji Xiao reached out and forcefully pulled Yan Wangchen into his embrace, then fixed his cold gaze on Wei Yan. “What if he is being forced by me? Do you dare to pry into my private affairs? Tired of living?”

Wei Yan’s lips trembled. “I… I…”

Ji Xiao: “Hah. Shadow Wind, send him to the Vanguard Camp.”

Shadow Wind stepped out from the darkness. “Yes.”

Ji Xiao scooped Yan Wangchen up in his arms and walked back.

Yan Wangchen said coolly, “I need to use the latrine.”

Ji Xiao changed direction with a light snort. “General, how does it feel to have someone throw themselves into your arms?”

Yan Wangchen: “You know he didn’t mean it that way.”

“Are you speaking up for him, General?”

“He doesn’t belong in the Vanguard Camp.”

“Once he’s there, he’ll naturally fit in.”

“Your Majesty…”

“Are you accusing me?”

“…”

Yan Wangchen simply shut his mouth.

When they reached the place, Ji Xiao put him down. “Go on.”

Black Cat: [Leader, I feel like my host is getting more and more reckless, blah blah blah.]

Leader: [Food and s*x are basic human needs.]

Black Cat: [I’m surprisingly unfazed tonight. Let me see what position my host will use tonight.]

Black Cat: [Okay, are there any new rules?]

Leader: [You’ll know once you install the update.]

Black Cat: [Got it.]

Black Cat eagerly installed the update package, but received no new information. The leader didn’t reply either, probably busy.

Not until Ji Xiao and Yan Wangchen returned to the tent for their pre-sleep exercise did Black Cat find out what the leader had sent him. It saw a blurry mess.

[Leader? Are you there? I don’t need a mosaic. I can’t find the program. I can’t uninstall it. How do I remove it?]

No response.

The Qin army had taken the border city of the Chang Kingdom and was preparing to attack the next city when Chang sent a request for peace negotiations.

Ji Xiao stated that unless Chang submitted to Qin and became a vassal state, there would be no peace talks regardless of any conditions.

The Chang Emperor was furious and personally led his army.

He was never a merciful man. He forcibly conscripted soldiers, trying to overwhelm the Qin army with sheer numbers. Chang was filled with resentment over the forced conscription.

But the Chang Emperor persisted, vowing to repel the Qin army.

Yan Wangchen: “When the court officials heard of Chang’s peace offer, they advised you to stop while it’s good. War always costs lives. They don’t want you to be known as a tyrant.”

“A tyrant?”

Ji Xiao chuckled lowly, sitting down on his lap, wrapping his arms around his neck, and said in a deep voice, “General, if I want to become the master of the world, will you help me?”

He looked into his eyes.

Yan Wangchen gripped his waist. “Yes.”

Not to mention fighting for you, even if I were to be crushed to dust, I would still be willing.

Yan Wangchen buried his head, his thumb lightly stroking his lower back. “What you said before… Just me, no one else in the harem. Will it always hold true?”

Ji Xiao didn’t answer. Instead, he pressed him down onto the chair and kissed him.

Chang’s human-wave tactics were useless against Yan Wangchen’s strategies.

He sent spies to spread rumors in Chang.

The Chang Emperor shows no regard for the people’s safety. The border generals are useless. All he knows is to fill the gaps with lives.

After the Chang Emperor repeatedly attempted to assassinate the Qin Emperor, the Qin Emperor declared that he only wanted the Chang Emperor’s life. The rest of Chang would remain as before.

But the Chang Emperor was unwilling. He refused to pay for his reckless malice and wanted to drag Chang down with him.

Regardless of the truth, the Chang Emperor’s brutal oppression had been building for too long. With this forced conscription, anyone who refused was killed. Once the rumors spread, the oppressed Chang people rebelled.

Yan Wangchen disciplined his soldiers strictly. When they entered the city, they touched nothing of the people’s. They only sent people to take over the city and did not punish the surrendered Chang soldiers.

The people were relieved to hear this. It was just a change of ruler. They believed that whoever was emperor was better than the current one.

Thus, the Qin army smoothly marched into Chang’s capital, breached the palace, and replaced Chang’s flag with Qin’s.

Ji Xiao and Yan Wangchen resided in the palace. They sent messages back to their country to send someone to take over Chang, then waited.

On the new dragon bed, Yan Wangchen lay on his stomach enjoying Ji Xiao’s massage on his waist. He said softly, “Both the Yun and Mo kingdoms want to send a princess for marriage.”

Ji Xiao smiled. “They’re scared.”

Originally, four kingdoms stood equally, maintaining balance. Though other kingdoms had stirred during Qin’s internal strife, none dared to make the first move. Now, with Qin’s swift victory over Chang, the other two kingdoms wanted to send princesses to test Qin’s stance.

“Not necessarily,” Yan Wangchen closed his eyes. “Perhaps in their minds, Qin has just finished a major war. It can’t recover immediately and won’t attack another kingdom right away.”

“So, they’re testing us. They want to know if we’ll strike them after we recuperate. If we do, they’ll join forces. They might attack Qin while we’re still recovering, before Chang is fully secured. They could seize Chang and then divide the land.”

“The Emperor is wise. Spies report that Yun and Mo’s borders are shifting.”

“Then we fight.”

Yan Wangchen opened his eyes and took his hand. Ji Xiao stopped and lay down beside him. Yan Wangchen turned on his side and looked into his eyes. “The young men of my Yan family are all brilliant generals. Have my father and eldest brother attack Yun, and my second brother and third brother attack Mo.”

“Isn’t it you who will fight for me?”

“It is the Yan family.”

“I want you to fight. I want you to become a god, the War God of Qin.”

Yan Wangchen stared at him for a moment, unable to see his thoughts. After a silence, he said, “Let them go first. I’ll go to both kingdoms and take the final battle.”

“Alright.”

Yan Wangchen got up, put on his boots, and donned his armor. His expression was cold. “I’ll have someone escort you back. Left Deputy General Li will stay here. I’m heading to the Yun border. First Yun, then Mo.”

Ji Xiao nodded. “Then I’ll await the General’s news back home.”

“The General is very confident?”

“The four kingdoms have been balanced for years. They’re not like my Yan family, who never slackened. They can’t beat us.”

“Mm.”

Yan Wangchen reached the palace gate, his back to him. He asked the question that had remained unanswered that night. “What Your Majesty promised me—just me, no one else in the harem—will it always hold true?”

Ji Xiao sighed softly. “General…”

Yan Wangchen’s gaze turned cold. He strode away.

On the journey back, Ji Xiao spotted Wei Yan in the procession and beckoned to him.

Wei Yan rode his horse slowly closer to the carriage.

Ji Xiao: “Come onto my carriage.”

Wei Yan’s heart trembled. “Yes.”

He entered the carriage. Ji Xiao leaned back comfortably, twirling a teacup in his hand. “You’re still alive?”

Wei Yan was on the verge of tears. “Your Majesty, I was rambling nonsense that night. Please spare my life.”

Ji Xiao extended his cup. Wei Yan carefully picked up the teapot and poured a cup of tea. Ji Xiao took a sip and looked at him with a half-smile. “You’re so weak. How did you survive the Vanguard Camp?”

“Just luck…”

“Do you like General Yan?”

“No, no…”

“No? I clearly saw you throw yourself into his arms.”

“No, that’s not it,” Wei Yan was drenched in cold sweat. “I respect the General. That night I was just upset. I don’t know. I don’t like him. Really.”

“You don’t like him? My General—how dare you despise him.”

Wei Yan’s legs went weak and he knelt. “No, I’m not worthy. Right, I’m not worthy of the General. I wouldn’t dare.”

Black Cat couldn’t stand it. “Why are you bullying him? Is it fun?”

Ji Xiao: “…”

He waved his hand. “Get lost.”

Wei Yan scrambled out.

He had been away from home for a long time. The General, worried about his family’s concern and his homesickness, specially allowed him to return home, removed him from the army rolls.

But he never expected that among all the soldiers, the Emperor would spot him at a glance! His life was nearly lost, sob!

Passing through Feng City. Yan Wangchen had already informed about Wei Yan’s matter. Wei Yan told the general leading the return and left the team without stopping, heading straight to Feng City.

Entering his home felt like a lifetime. He thought even if he faced family punishment, he wouldn’t mind. He missed his parents and the brother he had never met.

He expected his parents to be furious and immediately bring out the family rod. Instead, he was greeted with concern and care.

Wei Yan: “???”

His mother said reproachfully, “Oh, you! If you wanted to join the army and temper yourself, you didn’t have to sneak away without telling your family.”

Wei Yan: “?” They knew?

His mother wiped the corner of her eye. “If General Yan hadn’t sent a letter, we would have thought something had happened to you.”

Wei Yan was deeply moved. “It was Yan Wangchen, General Yan, who sent a letter?”

“Exactly,” his father glared at him helplessly. “Your mother was so worried she nearly miscarried. If General Yan hadn’t sent that letter, your sister would never have been born!”

Wei Yan couldn’t help but cry out loud. “General!”

Such a good general. Such a brave and skillful general, cold outside but warm inside. Yet he was forced by His Majesty to submit to him!

Heaven is unjust!

Wei Yan gritted his teeth. “That tyrant!”

“Slap!”

His father slapped his face and said angrily, “Are you tired of living!”

“Boo hoo.”

Looking at their son, who was in tears and filled with grievance and anger, Wei Yan’s parents exchanged a glance, both bewildered.
