Chapter 69: Patrol and Provocation

Liang Qiujian stepped forward to shield Ji Xiao, his gaze dark as he stared at Zhou Rong.

“Oh? Playing bodyguard now? Are you seriously picking a fight with the patrol team in B City?”

Zhou Rong let out a cold laugh.

“Brothers, this man reeks of zombies. I suspect he’s been keeping one secretly. Arrest him—”

Liang Qiujian’s fist shot out.

Zhou Rong dodged with incredible speed, smirking. “I’ve got wind powers. As long as I’m fast enough, you can’t hit me—ah—”

He was sent flying by Liang Qiujian’s kick.

Seeing this, Zhou Rong’s team members surged forward.

The crowd scattered, some fleeing, others staying to watch.

Liang Qiujian’s eyes narrowed. Armor coated his limbs as he charged in barehanded, each punch landing with brutal force.

Two superpowered individuals from the patrol team attacked—one with ice, the other with fire.

Without dodging, Liang Qiujian raised his hand and deflected both elements back.

Onlookers: “Holy crap! What metal is that? It can resist fire and ice? And even bounce them back?”

“That fireball and ice blade looked pretty weak. If the armor’s tough enough, of course you can deflect them.”

“I’ve seen that ice-user impale a zombie’s head and embed the blade deep into a wall.”

“…Then this big guy’s a beast.”

“He’s got that bodybuilder physique.”

“…”

With a fierce expression, Liang Qiujian pinned the patrol team members to the ground and pummeled them. Finally, he grabbed Zhou Rong, who tried to flee with his wind powers, and slammed him hard against the wall. “Say that again. Who’s going with you?”

Ji Xiao, who had been watching the show, walked over to him, his clear eyes filled with admiration. “Captain, you’re amazing.”

“Bang—”

Liang Qiujian pressed harder, denting the wall behind Zhou Rong, as if forcing him into it.

Zhou Rong spat blood, wailing, “I was just joking… ah—”

Liang Qiujian released him, then kicked him again, snarling, “No one insults my brother in front of me.”

Onlookers: “Brother? Isn’t their roles reversed?”

“The older brother looks way too young.”

“This younger brother is so handsome! The way they move together is amazing!”

“Wake up, they’re brothers.”

“They might not be blood-related.”

“What kind of person ships them in this day and age?”

“If you don’t ship, how would you know what shipping means?”

“…”

Ignoring the crowd, Ji Xiao tugged at Liang Qiujian’s sleeve. “It’s scary out here. Let’s go home, Captain.”

Liang Qiujian: “…”

He turned to meet Ji Xiao’s amused gaze.

[He couldn’t care less about Zhou Rong, who was still wailing on the ground.]

The Black Cat fell into thought.

‘When did my host become like this?’

When they got home, Zhong Tian and the others hadn’t returned yet.

Ji Xiao openly bought a pile of cooked food, set it on the table, and sat down to eat.

Liang Qiujian, full after two bowls of noodles: “…”

Ji Xiao’s eyes glinted with laughter. “Told you not to eat two bowls. Now you can only watch, right?”

Liang Qiujian looked away from the table. “I broke a sweat fighting. I’m going to take a shower.”

“Go ahead.”

Just as Ji Xiao was about to finish eating, the Black Cat warned, “Stop eating. Put it away. Zhong Tian and the others are back.”

The things on the table vanished, cleared by the cat.

Ji Xiao licked his lips, pulled out a cigarette, and lit it. The door opened just as he exhaled a puff of smoke. “You’re back.”

He pulled Zhong Tian to sit opposite him and said to the three incoming people, “You three head to your rooms first. Zhong Tian and I have something to discuss with Mr. Zhang.”

Sun Zhou: “OK~”

Ji Xiao: “No need to be so formal. Just call me Brother Zhang.”

“Brother Zhang.”

Qin Yue called out expressionlessly, then pulled a rag from under the table and wiped it.

Ji Xiao: “…”

“Xiao Tian and I got into the Technology Department,” Qin Yue said after cleaning the table, putting down the rag. “Sun Zhou and the other two, along with two solo ability users, were assigned to a patrol team.”

Black Cat: ‘He only wiped it because he saw the grease.’

Ji Xiao: [Shut up.]

Black Cat: “…” Hmph. Men.

Zhong Tian said calmly, “Both the Technology Department and the patrol team distribute supplies. We’ve agreed to leave food for you every day.”

Ji Xiao grinned. “No need to save any for us. Jianjian earns our keep by moving bricks.”

Zhong Tian looked puzzled. “Can you still move bricks now?”

“Then we won’t bother,” Qin Yue said, lightly tapping Zhong Tian’s hand to silence him. “Brother Zhang, I have a request.”

His eyes suddenly lit up.

“That off-road RV of yours… how does it work? We’re… very curious. We’d really like to understand it. Please—”

Before Qin Yue could finish, Ji Xiao pulled the keys from his pocket and tossed them over.

Qin Yue caught them smoothly, stunned.

“You can even take it apart, as long as you can put it back together.”

“…”

“I’ve temporarily bound it to you two.”

“Thank you.”

Qin Yue thanked him earnestly.

Zhong Tian suddenly grabbed Qin Yue’s hand and stood up. “Qin Yue, Qin Yue, let’s go.”

Qin Yue smiled helplessly at Ji Xiao. “Sorry, he’s a bit excited.”

Ji Xiao waved a hand. “I understand. Go ahead.”

As Qin Yue and Zhong Tian walked out,

Qin Yue said softly, “It’s already dark. Can we look at it tomorrow morning?”

“No, I want to see it now.”

“…Sigh.”

Ji Xiao stubbed out his cigarette, sniffed the lingering smell of meat in the air, and guiltily returned to his room.

Liang Qiujian was already lying on the bed in his pajamas, asleep.

Ji Xiao tiptoed into the bathroom.

After showering, he lay down beside Liang Qiujian, who immediately pulled him into his arms.

“Baby?”

“Mm.”

Liang Qiujian answered unconsciously.

His deep voice echoed by Ji Xiao’s ear, making his throat tickle.

When Liang Qiujian’s muscles tensed, the sparks that flew from their collision were truly electrifying.

Ji Xiao reached out, then pulled back, closing his eyes.

‘Forget it. Let him recover. Time to sleep.’

Downstairs.

Inside the off-road RV.

Qin Yue sat in the driver’s seat, watching Zhong Tian crouch at his feet, exploring under the steering wheel to figure out how to dismantle it. He sighed helplessly. “Get up first. Don’t you want to check out the back?”

Zhong Tian spun around abruptly, his head popping out between Qin Yue’s legs, eyes sparkling. “Can we? Can we go to the back?”

Qin Yue’s breath hitched. He instinctively spread his legs wide to avoid Zhong Tian hitting something he shouldn’t. “Get out first.”

“Mm-hmm!”

Zhong Tian tried to stand up quickly but banged his head on the steering wheel. He buried his head between Qin Yue’s legs again, grumbling, “My head hurts so much.”

Damn.

“Zhong Tian!”

Who’s the one with the headache here?

Zhong Tian looked up in confusion. “You poked me.”

God.

Qin Yue grabbed his shoulders, pulled him up, got out of the driver’s seat, and walked straight to the small door, opening it to the back.

Zhong Tian touched his lips. It really had poked him.

He hurried after him.

The back was much more spacious than the cab.

Qin Yue immediately spotted a few unopened condoms on the bedside table. His mouth twitched as he swept them into a drawer.

Zhong Tian didn’t notice that; he began carefully examining every corner and device.

The next morning.

The three slacker team members reported for patrol duty, starting their first day.

Ji Xiao and Liang Qiujian, noticing no one else was around, enjoyed a lavish breakfast in the living room.

They hadn’t eaten half of it when

the Black Cat said, “Stop eating. Zhong Tian and the others are back.”

Ji Xiao: [Stop!] I haven’t had enough. Don’t take it back!

Black Cat: “…”

The door opened.

Qin Yue, with dark circles under his eyes, carried the sleeping Zhong Tian inside. He kicked the door shut with his foot, nodded politely at Ji Xiao and Liang Qiujian without seeming to notice the feast on the table, and walked straight to the guest bedroom.

Ji Xiao coughed lightly. “There’s a bit too much breakfast. Want to join us?”

Qin Yue paused, looked back at the hearty meal, and said, “Wait a moment.”

He quickly carried Zhong Tian to the room, laid him on the bed, then came out, grabbed only a baozi and a glass of soy milk. “Thanks.”

Ji Xiao asked, “Not taking any for Zhong Tian?”

“This is for him,” Qin Yue said softly. “I’ll eat at the Technology Department later.”

Ji Xiao wiped his mouth with a napkin. “Take a bit more for both of you. There’s so much here that Jianjian and I… the Captain and I can’t finish it anyway.”

[It seemed Liang Qiujian didn’t like being called Jianjian in front of others.]

Qin Yue was silent for a moment, then took another baozi and thanked Ji Xiao earnestly again. “Thanks.”

Ji Xiao was speechless.

He directly shoved a plate of steamed dumplings—only two eaten—into Qin Yue’s hands. “Alright, go ahead.”

Qin Yue’s lips moved, but he didn’t thank him again. He returned to the room.

Liang Qiujian looked displeased. “Next time, let’s eat in our room.”

[Qin Yue was probably getting suspicious—suspicious about the real cost of exchanging items.]

Ji Xiao: “Yeah, I’ll listen to you. I didn’t expect them to come back.”

‘I thought they’d gone to the Technology Department. Looks like they spent the whole night studying the RV downstairs. Such dedication.’

Back in the room, Qin Yue set the plate and cup on the bedside table and woke Zhong Tian. “Xiao Tian, get up and eat breakfast before going back to sleep.”

Zhong Tian leaned groggily into his arms, refusing to open his eyes. “I’m sleepy… I want to sleep…”

“I’ll feed you.”

“Mm.”

Qin Yue washed his hands, sat back on the bed, pulled Zhong Tian into his arms, and picked up a dumpling, bringing it to his lips. “Open up.”

“Ah—nom.”

Zhong Tian ate with his eyes closed.

Back in school, Zhong Tian often stayed up late for research, and every morning Qin Yue would feed him breakfast while he was half-asleep in his arms.

He was used to this dynamic.

Qin Yue’s gaze softened. He fed him a few dumplings and a baozi, occasionally giving him sips of soy milk.

Only when Zhong Tian buried his face in his chest and mumbled, “I’m done, going to sleep,” did Qin Yue let him lie down properly and quietly ate the remaining breakfast.

Living room.

“Staying home with nothing to do—will you get bored?” Ji Xiao looked up. “Maybe you should find something to do too?”

Liang Qiujian shook his head. “I’m worried about you being alone.”

“Then let’s go together and ask them to assign us some tasks?”

“Alright.”

Having decided, Ji Xiao picked up the tablet and started gaming on the sofa.

Liang Qiujian walked to the window, lit a cigarette, and seemed to gaze at the scenery outside, but his peripheral vision was fixed on Ji Xiao, who was absorbed in his game.

It had been less than a week since the apocalypse began.

In such a short time, how had he and Ji Xiao ended up here?

At first, he had saved Ji Xiao and taken him along, taking care of him, because Ji Xiao was his idol.

A fan wanting to help their idol—what was wrong with that?

He took a deep drag of his cigarette. A fan having fantasized about their idol before—was that so hard to admit?

But…

He leaned against the wall, no longer hiding, and stared at Ji Xiao unabashedly.

It was different.

It had been different ever since the day he returned from foraging and saw Ji Xiao, clean and with newfound powers.

Ji Xiao’s step-by-step seduction was impossible to refuse.

And he didn’t want to refuse.

Finishing a round of the game, Ji Xiao looked up at him. “If you’re going to smoke, just smoke. Why are you staring at me?”

Liang Qiujian grinned. “Eye candy.”

Ji Xiao: “?”

‘Is that supposed to be funny? Like the saying ‘mouth-watering’?’

Later, they also went to get assigned positions.

They, too, became a patrol team.

Liang Qiujian proved with his strength that he alone could match an entire team, so he and Ji Xiao patrolling one street was more than enough.

Coincidentally, during their registration, they ran into Zhou Rong, who had come to file a complaint, hoping to use the authorities to catch Liang Qiujian and Ji Xiao.

Ji Xiao and Liang Qiujian couldn’t be bothered with him, completely ignoring him.

His complaint would come to nothing anyway.

And indeed it did.

Not only did Zhou Rong fail to get them in trouble, but the patrol chief also investigated the truth and fired him.

On the second day, Ji Xiao and Liang Qiujian began their duty, striding down their assigned street in their issued uniforms, making quite the spectacle.

The duo attracted the attention of many passersby.

Especially the handsome Ji Xiao, whom many recognized. With the towering, muscular Liang Qiujian by his side, their head-turn rate was extremely high.

A passerby muttered, “Feels like the pre-apocalyptic days—a big star and his bodyguard…”

Ji Xiao and Liang Qiujian stopped, looking at the nervous young man who had run up to them.

The boy glanced at the surrounding people and whispered, “Patrol officers, I… I want to report something.”
