Chapter 73: A Fresh Start in a Strange Body

Ji Xiao woke up in an apartment.

The cozy, clean surroundings lifted his spirits somewhat.

Then he saw his face in the mirror—so exquisitely androgynous it was almost uncanny.

“This body… it’s a top?”

Black Cat: “Yes indeed.”

Ji Xiao: “…”

The body had a perfect figure, not an ounce of extra fat, but… no strength either. He could tell this body didn’t exercise often.

Looks like getting fit would have to be a priority.

Black Cat: “Host, shall I send you the plot?”

Ji Xiao: “Mm.”

The original body, Xiao Shiyu, had flawless, androgynous features—a stunning beauty who drew eyes the moment he appeared.

He never turned down anyone who asked him out—as long as they were men. The only one he ever actively pursued was Ruan Jier, whom he’d bumped into by chance outside the company.

Ruan Jier’s name sounded gentle, and his features were merely handsome in a clean-cut way—not exactly striking. But his eyes were pure, his demeanor honest and straightforward. That instantly caught Xiao Shiyu’s interest.

Xiao Shiyu was androgynous not just in looks but also in voice. He kept his hair shoulder-length, tied in a braid that hung over his chest. He invited Ruan Jier to dinner, subtly plied him with alcohol, and slept with him that very night.

Ruan Jier was earnest. When he woke up, he asked to start a relationship. Xiao Shiyu, who had always parted ways after a one-night stand, agreed.

But even after becoming Ruan Jier’s boyfriend, he couldn’t resist when others invited him out. It was as if it had become a habit.

To Ruan Jier, Xiao Shiyu was not only beautiful but also his favorite manga artist. Ruan Jier had given him his whole heart. When he later heard that Xiao Shiyu was available to anyone, he went back almost in collapse to confront him, and Xiao Shiyu frankly admitted it.

Ruan Jier felt deeply toyed with and left decisively. After he left, Xiao Shiyu suddenly realized he had lost interest in casual encounters. He kept thinking about Ruan Jier. But over time, he couldn’t help himself and went back to his old ways—except every time he slept with someone, he fantasized it was Ruan Jier. Until the day he died, he was filled with regret.

Black Cat: “The original owner’s task in this world is to make Ruan Jier understand his actions, not leave him, and spend his life together with him.”

Ji Xiao: “…”

Black Cat asked with concern: “Host, are you okay? I’ve noticed you’ve been getting more and more wild lately. This world’s mission shouldn’t be hard, right?”

Ji Xiao kicked the mirror, shattering it.

Black Cat’s fur stood on end: “!!!” Scared the cat to death!

Ji Xiao took a deep breath, walked back to the bed, and sat down. Coldly, he said, “Give me a pack of cigarettes.”

Xiao Shiyu didn’t have a habit of smoking. Ji Xiao lit a cigarette and held it between his lips: “Cat, did you do this on purpose?”

Black Cat: “Huh?”

“Did you deliberately pick this kind of world for me? Come on, how many ex-f*ck buddies do I have?”

Black Cat: “Thirty-two…”

Ji Xiao: “…”

He didn’t say another word until he finished the cigarette. Black Cat watched him clean up the mirror shards, pick up his phone and wallet, and head out. Cautiously, it asked: “Host, where are you going?”

Ji Xiao said coolly: “To the hospital. For a checkup.”

Black Cat: “No need for that, Xiao Shiyu doesn’t have any diseases.”

Ji Xiao still went out. But he didn’t go to the hospital; he went to the company instead. It was already afternoon.

In the original plot, Ji Xiao was supposed to meet Ruan Jier at the company this evening. Sensing his coldness, Black Cat explained: “This world really wasn’t my choice. The tasks are random. It just so happened that our group received this client, and it just so happened to be assigned to you.”

Ji Xiao: “…”

Black Cat persuaded: “Anyway, it’s the original body that was promiscuous, not you. The moment you arrived, Xiao Shiyu is no longer Xiao Shiyu—he’s Host you.”

Ji Xiao sighed softly: [What difference does that make? This body is ultimately filthy.]

Black Cat: “…” Ah, how do I comfort this? After racking its brain for a long time, Black Cat said dryly: “Then… maybe you can wash it more?”

Ji Xiao: [Makes sense.]

Black Cat: “???” It… it worked?

Ji Xiao hailed a taxi and got in. The cheerful driver said: “Little lady, are you a star? You’re really beautiful.”

Ji Xiao said flatly: “Thank you.” His voice was androgynous, neutral yet light and airy.

The driver continued praising: “Your voice is also very nice. Not like those coquettish young girls, but it sounds so pleasant.”

Ji Xiao: “…” He stared out the window with a cold gaze, not wanting to engage further with the driver.

Just then, his phone rang. It was his editor, Xiang Zhi.

“Your ‘Tangible Happiness’ is getting an anime adaptation. Come to the company to discuss the details.”

“Okay.”

****

Qianman Entertainment. After finalizing the adaptation details with his editor, Ji Xiao went downstairs alone and sat on a sofa in the company lobby. Soon he saw Ruan Jier saying goodbye to colleagues.

Though clearly twenty-eight, he looked no more than twenty. Clear eyes, clean demeanor, simple jeans and a white sweater, with short, casually ruffled hair. He smiled and waved goodbye to those around him as he headed for the entrance. His smile was very healing.

Black Cat: “After getting used to muscular guys, can this style interest you?”

Ji Xiao didn’t want to discuss this with a cat. He stood up and said indifferently: [No need, I’m fine with anything.]

Black Cat: “…” As expected of Host!

Walking out of the company entrance, Ji Xiao came to stand next to Ruan Jier, who was waiting for a car. Sensing someone approach, Ruan Jier glanced over instinctively. When he saw that face, a flicker of astonishment passed through his eyes, then he gave a polite smile. Ji Xiao also lifted the corners of his lips.

Ruan Jier quickly lowered his head, trying to control his racing heart. *Damn, this girl is so beautiful!*

Ji Xiao reached into his pocket and frowned slightly: “Sorry, could you do me a favor?”

Ruan Jier looked up: “Wh-what?”

“It seems I’ve lost my phone. Could I borrow yours to make a call? I’m not sure if I dropped it at the company or in the taxi.”

“Of course.”

Ruan Jier handed over his phone without hesitation.

“Thank you.”

Ji Xiao gave him a gentle smile and dialed his own number.

Black Cat, who had watched him deliberately leave his own phone on the sofa: “…” So clumsy! But it actually worked?

The call connected quickly.

Ji Xiao’s voice was very gentle: “Hello, did you pick up my phone? Yes, this is the owner. Ah, I see. Sorry to trouble you. I’ll come back to get it. Thank you.”

After hanging up, Ji Xiao returned the phone to Ruan Jier: “Thank you for your help. It turns out I left my phone at the company. I’ll go back and get it.”

“Mm-hmm.”

When Ruan Jier took the phone, he touched Ji Xiao’s slightly cool fingers and his throat tightened. He watched Ji Xiao walk back into the company, gripping the phone a little tighter.

*So beautiful. And gentle. His voice is nice too. His hands… his hands are also beautiful.* He had seen Ji Xiao’s slender, delicate fingers and the jade-like wrist exposed. They seemed to shimmer.

“So there really are people in this world who look like they stepped out of an anime.” And… from the same company? His already happy mood from joining Qianman Entertainment got even better. Until his taxi arrived, Ji Xiao didn’t come out. He got in the car regretfully.

After he left, Ji Xiao slowly walked out of the company gate.

Black Cat: “Why didn’t you leave with him?”

Ji Xiao: “No rush. Only strategy wins hearts.”

For the next few days, Ji Xiao didn’t go back to the company. Instead, he stayed home practicing his drawing skills from memory and integrating knowledge.

Five days later.

Ji Xiao lit a cigarette and dialed Ruan Jier’s number. Before Ruan Jier could even speak, Ji Xiao’s weak voice came through first: “Sister Xiang… I feel terrible… I think I’m going to pass out…”

At that moment, Ruan Jier, who was about to go shopping, felt his heart tighten. He recognized Ji Xiao’s voice and asked urgently: “Are you okay? Where are you now?”

“At home… Who are you…?”

“Where is your home?”

“Maple Forest Apartments, 926… urgh…”

“Hello? Are you still there? Are you okay? Hello?”

Getting no response, Ruan Jier’s heart clenched. He quickly ran to the curb to hail a taxi.

Back in the apartment, Black Cat watched Ji Xiao smoke while acting, swallowing hard. *Host’s acting skills are getting more refined.* The phone lying aside went dark. Ji Xiao waited until he finished his cigarette, then leisurely went to the living room’s wine cabinet, opened a bottle of red wine, and drank as he walked into the studio to get props and start setting the scene.

Black Cat: “…” Host is awesome.

****

Ruan Jier rushed to the apartment, standing at 926’s door, and realized he had been so anxious he lost his common sense. Ever since that chance encounter, he had gone to the company every day hoping to run into the beautiful lady again, but not once did he see her. He had memorized the number in his phone but didn’t dare call. When he got the call today and thought she was in trouble, he panicked. *I should have called an ambulance first, idiot!*

Ruan Jier placed one hand on the door, ready to pull out his phone. Unexpectedly, the door swung open. “?” *Did she leave it unlocked?* He checked the number again, stepped inside, and immediately saw Ji Xiao sleeping on the living room sofa.

“…” He closed the door, walked to the sofa, and smelled alcohol. Then he saw scattered sketches, a wine bottle, and a glass on the table. Ruan Jier sighed in relief, looking at her breathing steadily and the obviously sleeping face, feeling a mix of amusement and frustration. *Such a misunderstanding…*

He leaned down: “Are you okay?” No response. That exquisite face was clearly in front of him. The lips, reddened from wine, glistened. Ruan Jier quickly stood up straight, but moved too abruptly and bumped the table. The wine bottle rolled off and shattered with a sharp crack.

He nervously looked over. Ji Xiao’s eyelids fluttered, and he opened his eyes, seeming hazy. Ruan Jier: “I…” Before he could finish, Ji Xiao sat up, pulled him down into his arms, and they fell onto the sofa together. Ji Xiao tilted his head slightly and kissed him on the lips.

Ruan Jier’s eyes flew open. Ji Xiao wrapped an arm around his waist, closed his eyes, and kissed him deeply. Ruan Jier closed his eyes. *This shouldn’t be happening.* Perhaps the intoxicating scent of wine between their lips clouded his judgment; he couldn’t help but respond, bending his knees to avoid pressing his full weight on him.

Ji Xiao moved his lips to Ruan Jier’s ear, breathing softly, his androgynous voice very light: “Baby…”

Ruan Jier’s body stiffened. He lifted himself slightly, looked at Ji Xiao’s flushed, delicate face, and asked quietly: “Who am I?”

Ji Xiao’s eyes half-opened, as if trying to focus: “Xiao Mo? No… Zhen Zhen? A Wu? Xiao…”

Ruan Jier covered his mouth with his hand, furious: “How many lovers do you have?!”

Ji Xiao extended his tongue and licked Ruan Jier’s palm. Ruan Jier reflexively pulled his hand back.

Ji Xiao pulled him down again to kiss him. Ruan Jier struggled to push him away, stood up, and stepped back from the sofa. Yet that person looked at him with grievance: “My head hurts so much.”

“Serves you right if it kills you.” Ruan Jier’s heart was in turmoil.

Everyone loves beauty. He admitted that their first encounter, with that beauty and gentleness, had left an impression on him. The kiss just now had almost bewitched him. But then he thought of the names that slipped out. He was angry. Yet he had no standing to be.

Ji Xiao was still groaning, holding his head. Ruan Jier suppressed his chaotic thoughts, poured him a glass of water, helped him into the bedroom to rest, and then turned to leave. Once outside, he felt dejected.

*Ah, a relationship that hasn’t even started is destined to end. With Ji Xiao’s skilled kissing and those names spilling out, Ruan Jier knew he wouldn’t think about developing things further. Oh well, maybe the company still has plenty of cute girls. Losing one love isn’t the end of the world!*
