Chapter 5: The Unveiling of Rebirth

There was another crucial question, however.

Was he the only one who had been reborn from seven years in the future? Bai YuYang wouldn’t naively jump to conclusions about that.

This point still required further observation.

As for his earlier probing… it hadn’t yielded any significant results.

YuYang quietly turned his head, glancing at YuXi and QingYu, who were seated on opposite sides of the living room sofa.

Without another word, YuYang walked into the washroom, silently praying they wouldn’t start bickering.

Not even for the short time it would take him to wash up.

YuXi and QingYu had been at odds since childhood; YuYang knew this better than anyone.

***

Only after YuYang had closed the washroom door did Bai YuXi initiate a conversation.

Lin QingYu, her elder sister, was seated on the opposite sofa, seemingly sulking and utterly silent. This stalemate simply wouldn’t do.

“Sister QingYu, please calm down. We both know how unflappable Brother is when faced with problems, don’t we?”

“Unflappable, my foot!”

Hmph, this ungrateful loli! Even when given an easy out, she still refused to take it.

Since that was the case, YuXi had no intention of holding back her tongue.

“Honestly, Sister QingYu, I think Uncle and Aunt named you ‘QingYu’ – which means ‘light speech’ – because they hoped you’d speak more softly, like a lady.

They probably wished you wouldn’t be so boisterous. At the very least, they might have hoped you’d behave like a normal carbon-based lifeform, don’t you think?”

“Ah… that’s true… Wait, no! You little brat! You’re just finding creative ways to insult me!”

“How am I insulting you, Sister QingYu? I’m merely tracing the origin of the name Uncle and Aunt gave you. That’s perfectly normal, isn’t it? Or could it be that you’re finally feeling… unworthy of your name?”

“It’s not like I named myself!”

Lin QingYu stood up, brandishing her small fists, but quickly deflated like a punctured balloon, sinking back onto the sofa.

“Sigh… forget it. I can’t win against you, and I shouldn’t stoop to a child’s level.”

‘You’re barely a year older than me…’

Though YuXi wanted to retort, she knew she had already won, so she simply smiled.

“Mm, thank you, Sister QingYu, for not stooping to my level.”

The fiery loli now felt like a mute who had eaten bitter coptis – suffering in silence.

Truly, sometimes YuXi’s personality felt so strange. In front of YuYang, she was nothing more than an obedient little white cat.

Although, when it came to personality, Lin QingYu wasn’t exactly in a position to criticize others.

QingYu lifted her small head, looking around.

“Are your parents not home?”

This question was, in fact, rhetorical.

YuXi replied, “Mm, Sister QingYu, you already know they’re rarely home. It’s a rare occasion when they actually are, isn’t it?”

“That’s true.”

YuYang and YuXi’s parents seemed to be engaged in some secret environmental protection work, though the specifics remained unclear to everyone.

What was certain, however, was their constant work out of town, returning home perhaps only once or twice a year.

QingYu actually knew quite a lot about YuYang’s family affairs, given that they were childhood sweethearts and neighbors.

And there was one more thing… she had only recently discovered.

That was the fact that YuYang and YuXi were not blood relatives.

Logically, this secret was only supposed to be revealed by their uncle and aunt seven years from now. Yet, today, Lin QingYu somehow knew.

Because she, too, had been reborn from seven years in the future.

And she was absolutely certain that YuYang was in the same situation.

He had asked about the cake earlier. QingYu couldn’t possibly have been unaware, but she had merely feigned ignorance.

She had heartily enjoyed that cake just yesterday. Then, for some unknown reason, she had felt dizzy, only to wake up seven years in the past.

Lost in these thoughts, Lin QingYu let out a long sigh.

“Sister QingYu, are you… troubled by something?”

Seeing her suddenly sigh, YuXi looked a little confused.

Lin QingYu paused, then lifted her head. In her cherry-colored eyes, her gaze suddenly sharpened.

“YuXi, stop pretending. Why I’m sighing, don’t you know?”

“Stop pretending?” YuXi’s eyes widened slightly. “Sister QingYu, what are you suddenly talking about? Let me guess… are you sighing because you burned breakfast again?”

“I’ve never burned the pot!”

Oh no, she almost got sidetracked.

Lin QingYu glanced towards the washroom; YuYang had not yet emerged.

She deliberately lowered her voice, speaking mysteriously.

“Still playing games with me? Let me be blunt: did you also suddenly return to the present from a few years in the future?”

The word “also” clearly conveyed Lin QingYu’s stance.

“…”

YuXi blinked, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

But that astonishment lasted only a fleeting moment.

Her expression quickly returned to normal: “I only have one thing to say.”

“What?”

“I just want to say, Sister QingYu, have you been watching too many sci-fi movies? Or have you experienced some kind of shock?”

Indeed, at first hearing, anyone’s initial thought would be two words: ‘ridiculous’.

“No.”

But this time, Lin QingYu spoke with clear conviction: “YuXi, you don’t need to keep playing tai chi with me, beating around the bush. If I didn’t have absolute certainty and conviction, I wouldn’t easily bring this up.”

“Absolute certainty, huh…”

YuXi set down the empty teacup she had been idly fiddling with moments before.

It was a gift from her brother, one she had always cherished.

Then, she turned and sat properly, her expression gradually shifting from nonchalant to serious.

“Let’s be clear, Sister QingYu, I haven’t admitted to your ridiculous claims. But I am very curious why you’re suddenly saying this, and where this ‘absolute certainty’ of yours comes from.”

“It’s simple.”

Lin QingYu laboriously tried to cross her short legs, attempting to make a figure-four. After much effort, she finally managed, only to find it tiring, and promptly uncrossed them.

Instead, she extended her right index finger, beginning her analysis.

“When I arrived earlier, I said something. I mentioned that yesterday, YuYang asked me to wait outside the door so we could all go to the orientation ceremony together.

I also said that you were there, listening, when we made the agreement. Then, you both stood me up, leaving me to wait for over twenty minutes.”

“But in reality, that never happened at all. I clearly remember that on this very day in my previous life – the day before September 1st – I had to help my family, so I went to school with my dad in his car, and did not go with you two.”

“Since this arrangement, this agreement to go to school together this morning, didn’t exist, why did neither you nor YuYang react when I brought it up just now? It was as if the agreement truly existed.”

Finally, QingYu concluded,

“The outcome is quite clear. Evidently, you either don’t know, or don’t remember, whether such an agreement was made yesterday.

Since I spoke so naturally, you simply had to believe it. If you two weren’t reborn, why wouldn’t you remember a mere agreement from ‘yesterday’?”

This time, YuXi was genuinely surprised.

She stared blankly for a good while, then gave a bitter laugh, sighing as she spoke.

“I have to admire you for that, Sister QingYu. Your little head might not be big, but your memory truly is excellent.”

“Hmph, of course it is! Did you really need to tell me?”
