Chapter 61: The Truth Beyond Sight

Lin Qingyu’s thoughts were in chaos.

So much so that she didn’t even notice when her empty lunchbox fell to the ground.

This scene was a frequent visitor to her nightmares.

In the pitch black, YuYang would leave her behind, walking side by side with Mo Sishi—the one he ultimately chose. They laughed and talked, growing farther and farther away until they vanished into the distance, leaving Lin Qingyu alone in the darkness…

In that dream, no matter how loudly she called, how desperately she begged, how frantically she chased, YuYang never looked back, never acknowledged her.

Every time she woke from that nightmare, Lin Qingyu was drenched in cold sweat.

But now, a scene eerily similar to that dream was unfolding right before her eyes.

She watched as YuYang and Mo Sishi, both with eyes closed, held each other as if seeking warmth, their foreheads touching, whispering something softly.

Though they were only embracing, the gesture struck Lin Qingyu with overwhelming force.

In her cherry-colored eyes, tears swirled uncontrollably. Unconsciously, she pressed her right hand to her chest, feeling a phantom pain as if her heart were being torn apart—not real pain, but even harder to bear.

Everything spun around her… Lin Qingyu felt she could no longer think clearly.

She took a step forward… then another… each step heavy, as if weighed down by a thousand pounds.

Her mind was consumed with the thought of reaching YuYang, pulling him away, escaping—at least to a place without Mo Sishi…

All she wanted was for him to say, as carelessly as always, “I’m just joking with you.”

When she snapped back to reality, Lin Qingyu’s gaze had hardened. The heavy steps had turned into a starting sprint.

‘I’m going to take him back!’ That was her only thought now.

However…

Just as she took her first step toward that corner, before her other foot could follow, Loli Lin felt a strong tug on the back of her school collar, yanking her back to her original spot.

No, even further back. By the time Qingyu steadied herself, she was behind the pine tree, beyond the bench. From this angle, she couldn’t see YuYang anymore.

Not being able to see made her anxious.

‘Who is it?!’

With extreme anger, before even turning around, she swung her hand back to slap away the hand gripping her collar.

Then she whirled around fiercely, only to meet a pair of heterochromatic eyes.

“Ouyang Ning? You…”

The left eye’s crimson seemed to mirror Qingyu’s current anger and anxiety, while the right eye’s azure appeared to urge calm.

But the completely expressionless face, just like in her past life, still made Qingyu pause.

The very act of pulling her back was Ouyang Ning’s direct admission that she was a reincarnator.

Hah, so what?

Qingyu didn’t care about any of that now. Nothing else mattered. She just wanted to snatch back her YuYang.

Seeing this foolish loli about to ignore her and dash toward Brother YuYang again, Ouyang Ning clicked her tongue in annoyance and yanked her back once more.

Although Loli Lin was small and light, pulling her back twice nearly exhausted Ouyang Ning’s meager strength.

“What are you—!”

“Shh, quiet…”

Before she could loudly question her, Ouyang Ning quickly raised a finger to her lips, signaling silence.

Taking advantage of Lin Qingyu’s confusion, she dragged her a few more steps aside. If she ran again, Ouyang Ning wouldn’t have the energy to catch her.

Before Qingyu could react further, Ouyang Ning asked a question in a calm, flat tone.

“Are you trying to end it all? With Brother YuYang?”

Well, there was a slight inflection—she was still out of breath from the exertion.

Qingyu had intended to follow her impulse and run back, but Ouyang Ning’s words made her slowly turn around in surprise.

“What… do you mean by that…”

Her voice was cold, because that question struck at her very core.

How could she ever want to end things with YuYang? Nothing had even begun yet.

Yes, she would never end it, even if it killed her, and she wouldn’t let anyone say otherwise.

From Qingyu’s cherry-colored eyes, which had shifted from anger to determination, Ouyang Ning saw her answer.

She even peeked out to see Brother YuYang’s side seemed about to leave.

So Ouyang Ning’s next words needed no further beating around the bush.

“Listen, what you see with your eyes isn’t necessarily the truth. You want to take Brother YuYang back because you think he’s already been taken. But why are you so sure they’ve gotten together?”

“I…”

Before she could speak, Ouyang Ning continued, “What you see doesn’t matter. What matters is that if you had rushed out just now, you would have truly lost all hope. Do you understand?”

“……”

If anyone else had said this, Qingyu, in her current state, wouldn’t have listened at all.

But Ouyang Ning’s expression was too calm, her tone almost flat, which forced Qingyu to think.

She made Lin Qingyu look back from the brink of collapse and consider what she had been about to do.

First of all, she had only seen them embracing. That gesture alone didn’t prove they were in a relationship…

At most, it confirmed that Mo Sishi was a reincarnator. If YuYang knew that, he’d surely be shocked. Given his deep fondness for Mo Sishi, a “reunion” hug didn’t say much.

Things hadn’t fundamentally changed from before the rebirth…

Moreover, if she had rushed out and forcibly dragged YuYang away, in her current state, she might have taken him somewhere secluded and ranted, revealing everything, maybe even done something drastic—like pushing him down…

Cough! Even if her small frame couldn’t push him, she would have done something else.

If that happened, not only would she fail, but YuYang would definitely despise her completely…

Thinking about how her impulsiveness could ruin the hard-won opportunity after rebirth, Qingyu shuddered with afterthought.

She had calmed down considerably…

But Ouyang Ning didn’t have time to let her ponder.

She reminded Lin Qingyu to pick up the lunchbox she had dropped, then led her to hide behind the pine tree at the corner.

Ouyang Ning watched from behind the tree as YuYang and Mo Sishi walked away from the bench, side by side, heading toward the teaching building.

Soon, the class bell rang.

Crouching on the ground, Qingyu hugged her small lunchbox, her long pink hair hanging down, covering her eyes, making it impossible to read her thoughts.

But it was clear she was in a deep gloom.

Qingyu stood up and looked at Ouyang Ning with a puzzled gaze.

“If I remember correctly, you like YuYang too, don’t you?”

“Yes, without a doubt.”

Ouyang Ning’s answer came without hesitation.

‘One after another… they’re all the same…’

Qingyu’s small fists clenched tighter.

But still, Ouyang Ning had helped her this time. Qingyu unclenched her fists, let out a long sigh, and asked weakly.

“Then why did you help me? I’m grateful for this, but for you, it shouldn’t have been necessary.”

“It wasn’t necessary. Logically, if you’re eliminated first, I have one less competitor.”

Ouyang Ning’s heterochromatic eyes looked up at the sky, then followed the retreating figure of YuYang vanishing in the distance.

“But since I helped, it means it was necessary. Lin Qingyu, you don’t understand. If you are eliminated first, then besides Mo Sishi, none of the rest of us would stand a chance either. That’s the conclusion I’ve reached after analysis.”
