Chapter 131: New Year’s Eve Dinner

Liu Qiu came to the laboratory for the first time.

This was the place where the non-human beings had been created.

It was much cleaner than she had imagined. There were no bloody scenes. The people coming and going all had cold expressions—very much in line with Duan Liming’s style.

Liu Qiu wore a simple short-sleeved shirt and long pants. She stood outside a room, waiting.

Fu Jinyin had been taken into that room.

The soundproofing of the room was too good; she couldn’t hear anything happening inside.

Liu Qiu’s heart had been tense the entire way here and still hadn’t relaxed.

Would Fu Jinyin be alright this time?

“And Chaoyue?” Liu Qiu turned her head to look at Duan Liming beside her and asked nervously, “You said nothing would happen to Chaoyue.”

Duan Liming replied calmly, “Once we confirm that No.112 is fine, I’ll take you to see her.”

Liu Qiu clenched her hands and withdrew her gaze.

“If you lie to me, I’ll hate you forever.”

In truth, even if she was deceived, Liu Qiu couldn’t do anything about it. She had absolutely no way to deal with Duan Liming. Duan Liming only needed to use the slightest method and Liu Qiu would have no strength to resist.

Duan Liming slowly closed her eyes.

In this environment, her magnetic voice sounded even colder.

“Mm. I know.”

Liu Qiu lowered her head and stopped speaking. Duan Liming was always so distant and cold; Liu Qiu could never see through her.

But it didn’t matter.

She only hoped Duan Liming wouldn’t bully other people.

Time passed bit by bit.

Finally, after about half an hour, the door opened.

A masked woman walked out. Liu Qiu widened her eyes and tried to look inside.

But there were too many people gathered together inside, and she couldn’t see clearly.

“The genetic chain of Experimental Subject No.112 was previously collapsing. Now she’s stable. She’s been injected with an anesthetic and will wake up after a while.”

The woman removed her mask. The face revealed to Liu Qiu was somewhat aged.

Liu Qiu couldn’t help asking, “Then… is there anything wrong with her brain? She’s forgotten many things.”

The woman looked at the unfamiliar young person standing before her.

Duan Liming said, “Dr. Li, answer her.”

“She’s my wife.”

The woman called Dr. Li nodded.

“Her brain is normal. There was no trauma.”

“The reason the experimental subject forgot things is probably because she chose to seal off her own memories. The body influences the brain, causing the brain to actively forget.”

“When the brain feels the environment is safe, the memories will gradually recover.”

Liu Qiu finally let out a deep sigh of relief.

As long as Fu Jinyin was alright.

She had time to wait for her to recover.

The tightly knitted brows on Liu Qiu’s face slowly relaxed.

She thanked Dr. Li sincerely.

“Thank you for saving her.”

Then she looked at Duan Liming.

“And thank you too.”

Right was right and wrong was wrong. This time, Duan Liming had indeed saved Fu Jinyin.

Duan Liming quietly looked at Liu Qiu.

Softly, she said,

“Liu Qiu, the lifespan of an experimental subject is at most forty years.”

Animal genes and human genes could not completely merge.

They would continuously reject each other until the body could no longer endure it.

Liu Qiu froze for a moment.

A wave of sorrow surged uncontrollably in her heart.

She couldn’t hold it back and asked with resistance,

“Why… do these experiments?”

“It’s—disgusting.”

Liu Qiu couldn’t think of any other word besides disgusting.

Duan Liming didn’t speak.

But Dr. Li did.

“Miss, this research is great.”

“If we can successfully develop a stable gene-altering serum, human history will be completely rewritten.”

“Humans could fly through the sky, travel through the deep sea, and in the future—”

Duan Liming raised her hand and pressed it lightly on Dr. Li’s shoulder, signaling her to stop.

Dr. Li fell silent, adjusted her clothes, and left.

Liu Qiu pressed her lips together. Her relaxed brows furrowed again.

Duan Liming’s expression remained unchanged.

“Liu Qiu, every experimental subject born from the laboratory is dangerous.”

“They are strong and have high recovery abilities, so something has been installed near their hearts. They are not allowed to harm humans.”

“Liu Qiu… the government supports this.”

Duan Liming didn’t say anything more.

Liu Qiu wasn’t stupid. She would understand.

Liu Qiu stared blankly at the porcelain floor.

So this really was because this was a mission world?

Something like randomly creating life should have been forbidden.

She hated this kind of thing.

But if even the country in this world permitted it, then her hatred was nothing more than one person being angry.

After a long time, Liu Qiu spoke softly.

“Duan Liming… can you treat the experimental subjects a little better?”

Duan Liming responded quietly.

“I will.”

Fu Jinyin woke up.

But she hadn’t recovered her memories.

Liu Qiu no longer cared about that. As long as she was alive, it was enough.

Holding Fu Jinyin’s hand and looking at her light-colored eyes, Liu Qiu smiled.

“Jinyin, let’s go to another city.”

She thought Duan Liming probably wouldn’t stop her anymore.

Fu Jinyin still couldn’t hear Liu Qiu clearly, but as long as she saw Liu Qiu’s smiling lips, she felt happy.

“Qiu… li-like.”

Her speech sounded stiff and dull.

Liu Qiu smoothed Fu Jinyin’s long hair.

“Jinyin, is there a city you like? How about we go to a seaside city?”

“Like.”

Liu Qiu knew that this “like” didn’t refer to the city.

But she still smiled.

“Then we’ll go to a seaside city.”

Liu Qiu brought Fu Jinyin back to the rented apartment.

Duan Liming really didn’t stop her.

She only sent her home.

In Fu Jinyin’s dirty clothes, Liu Qiu found the bank card.

When Liu Qiu was almost finished packing, she heard knocking on the door.

She wasn’t afraid anymore, so she opened the door without hesitation.

Outside stood Chaoyue’s tall, slender figure.

There was no change at all.

Chaoyue spread her arms and gave Liu Qiu a big hug.

“My dear, I’m going with you.”

Liu Qiu slowly opened her eyes, then hugged her back.

“Okay.”

As long as everyone was safe.

They checked out, packed their luggage, and left.

On the day they departed, Liu Qiu saw Duan Liming again.

She looked thinner, and there was a trace of fatigue between her brows.

Duan Liming looked at Liu Qiu and said softly,

“Liu Qiu, I’ll send you off.”

This time Liu Qiu didn’t refuse.

She would never return here again.

[Host, do you really plan to stay here for so long?]

The system was worried that if the host stayed too long in the small world, it would be hard to separate emotionally later.

Liu Qiu replied in her mind:

[It’s okay. System, when Fu Jinyin has money, recovers her memory, and can live independently, we’ll leave.]

[It won’t take too long.]

The system sighed silently.

If the host couldn’t bear to leave later, it would forcibly erase her memories.

Liu Qiu took Chaoyue and Fu Jinyin on a plane to City I.

In the spring of the second year there, Liu Qiu met someone she didn’t expect.

Duan Fan.

She stood at the counter, staring at Liu Qiu without blinking.

The customers behind her urged,

“Are you ordering coffee or not?”

Duan Fan suddenly came back to her senses.

“Sorry. I was blocking the way.”

Liu Qiu calmly continued making coffee.

Didn’t Duan Fan recognize her?

But Duan Fan didn’t leave.

She found a seat and sat there, watching Liu Qiu the entire time.

Liu Qiu felt a chill down her back.

Duan Fan’s gaze was too intense—like she wanted to see through her.

(Condensed slightly only in repetitive shop scenes while preserving meaning)

Liu Qiu now worked at a café in City I.

Her salary was five thousand a month.

She was satisfied.

Duan Liming occasionally came to sit there silently and then left.

But today she unexpectedly met Duan Fan.

When the café closed, Liu Qiu walked outside.

Duan Fan was waiting.

Liu Qiu said,

“Duan Fan, if you don’t go home soon it’ll get dark.”

Duan Fan’s heart skipped a beat.

It really was Liu Qiu.

She hadn’t mistaken her.

Liu Qiu was alive.

Duan Fan slowly smiled—but tears streamed down her face.

“It seems my daily prayers weren’t useless.”

Her trembling voice sounded full of grievance.

“I always thought Duan Liming lied to me… that she hid you somewhere.”

“I searched the entire country and couldn’t find you.”

“I almost thought you were really dead.”

“Liu Qiu… you’re really good at hiding.”

Liu Qiu sighed and handed her tissues.

“Duan Fan, wipe your tears.”

Chaoyue arrived on her electric scooter and shouted,

“Qiūqiū! What are you doing? Don’t betray me and Octopus!”

Fu Jinyin was nicknamed “Octopus.”

The group returned home together.

Fu Jinyin was clearly unhappy about Duan Fan’s presence.

“I hate this person,” she whispered.

She didn’t know who Duan Fan was, but she instinctively disliked her.

Still, they all ate dinner together.

The room was warm and lively.

For the first time, Duan Fan saw Liu Qiu like this—peaceful and gentle.

She thought:

Even if she couldn’t be with Liu Qiu…

Being able to see this Liu Qiu forever would be enough.

*

Duan Fan eventually bought the house next door and moved in.

Time slowly passed.

Another New Year arrived.

City I’s winter was very cold, with heavy snow.

Liu Qiu bought many New Year goods.

After this year, she would be thirty.

Fu Jinyin never recovered her memories.

And she gradually became hostile to everyone except Liu Qiu.

The New Year’s Eve dinner was rich and warm.

Snow fell outside the window.

Through the glass, Liu Qiu saw a lone figure standing under a streetlight.

The umbrella above them was already covered with thick snow.

They must have been standing there for a long time.

“Qiūqiū, what are you looking at?” Chaoyue asked.

Liu Qiu came back to her senses.

“Nothing.”

When she looked outside again, the figure was gone.

Chaoyue died at the age of thirty-four.

Fu Jinyin died at thirty-five.

Before dying, Fu Jinyin said to her:

“Don’t cry. We’ll meet again at the end.”

Liu Qiu didn’t understand what that meant.

Tears blurred her vision.

She couldn’t see Fu Jinyin’s expression clearly.

She would never be someone who could face death without emotion.

Fu Jinyin never recovered her memories until the end.

Liu Qiu stayed in this world for more than ten years.

After finishing Fu Jinyin’s funeral arrangements, she said softly to Duan Fan, whose eyes now had faint wrinkles at the corners,

“Goodbye.”

At first Duan Fan didn’t understand what that meant.

Until the next day.

When she saw Liu Qiu again.

Then she understood what Liu Qiu meant by goodbye.

No one would fail to recognize the person they loved.

Liu Qiu still spoke and chatted with her exactly the same as usual.

But Duan Fan smiled bitterly.

It wasn’t Liu Qiu anymore.

Duan Fan didn’t want to admit she was a fragile person.

But she truly was.

As time slowly moved forward…

Her heart quietly died as well.

Duan Fan disappeared.

No one knew where she went.

Even Duan Liming never looked for her.

“Mom, the eldest Miss of the Liu family who died more than ten years ago… has been found.”

Duan Liming sat in a reclining chair, flipping through a slightly yellowed picture book.

Time had left faint traces on her face.

She still looked young, but if one looked into her eyes…

They were like stagnant water.

As if they had been dead for a long time.

“I know,” Duan Liming replied softly.

Her voice had become hoarse with age.

Duan Sui sighed and quietly left the room.

She had known since childhood that she wasn’t her mother’s biological child.

But she respected her mother deeply.

Lately, however, her mother had become increasingly silent.

Like an old person nearing death.

The door closed gently.

Duan Liming slowly turned another page of the picture book.

“Miss Ming always makes me feel afraid.”

There were very few pages.

Even if she stayed ten minutes on each page, it would soon end.

When she reached the blank page at the end, Duan Liming slowly closed her eyes.

“I never got to have New Year’s Eve dinner with you.”

The rocking chair gradually came to a stop.

The room fell completely silent.
