Chapter 17: The Mascot’s Fall and a Class Monitor’s Dilemma

In Class 4 of the second year, two individuals served as the very soul of the group.

The first was undoubtedly Bai YuYang, the campus heartthrob. He was the face of the class, not merely because his handsome looks elevated their image, but more importantly, because he excelled at almost everything!

From Olympiad competitions to guitar performances, and even the school sports meet.

Throughout his first year, Bai YuYang brought countless honors to the class. He was practically a treasured idol, revered by everyone, and envied beyond measure by other classes.

Then there was the second individual: Lin QingYu, the class’s very own mascot.

A tiny, adorable loli, her mere presence in the classroom, even if she barely spoke, had a universally calming and healing effect on everyone.

In short, she was simply too cute!

Don’t ask why QingYu couldn’t participate in the campus beauty pageant during her first year.

The answer? Lolis simply weren’t eligible.

So, what were the classmates to do when the soul of the class and its mascot found themselves in conflict?

Protect the mascot first, of course! Cuteness was innocent!

Ever since Lin QingYu had returned, several girls noticed her looking utterly dejected. Her slightly wronged expression led them to believe she had undoubtedly been bullied.

The break time was too short to question her, so they bravely mustered their courage and directly confronted the ‘obvious’ culprit.

Thus, Bai YuYang found himself in his current helpless predicament.

He scanned the girls surrounding him, letting out a long sigh.

Their immediate barrage of accusations, without a word of explanation, left YuYang somewhat speechless.

“Hey… could you perhaps clarify things before you start? I didn’t bully her. She already had an injury, and she was stubbornly trying to hide it, so I simply took her to the infirmary. That’s all.”

His straightforward and clear explanation caused the girls to exchange bewildered glances, unsure how to continue their interrogation.

They had acted somewhat impulsively, spurred by a righteous desire to defend their classmate QingYu, and had rushed over in a fit of indignation.

It seemed they truly had no evidence…

However, just as YuYang believed a simple explanation would end the farce, the girl on the far end pondered for a moment before suddenly speaking.

“That’s impossible!”

“Why is it impossible?” YuYang asked, bewildered.

The girl spoke with utmost confidence: “Because when I walked back to the classroom from the auditorium, I spoke with Lin QingYu. I wanted to ask why she was late. She complained about how hot the auditorium was and even pushed back her bangs. I clearly saw that her forehead had no injury then! Why is it bandaged now?!”

“That’s right… if that’s the case, then the injury could only have happened just now…”

The girls began to murmur amongst themselves once more.

The finger of accusation, once again, pointed squarely at Bai YuYang.

YuYang remained unhurried. “Tell me… did you follow QingYu all the way back to the classroom?”

“N-no… she went ahead by herself near the flower bed.”

“Then there you have it,” YuYang chuckled. “She simply tripped on the gravel path by the flower bed and fell…”

No…

YuYang stopped his explanation.

‘QingYu said she didn’t want anyone to know she’d tripped and fallen, didn’t she?’

‘She values her pride.’

Indeed, this loli might be small in stature, but her sense of pride was quite extraordinary.

Yet, stopping his explanation at this moment was fatal.

Zhou Fan, the leading girl, looked astonished. “No way… Class Monitor, did you really hit her?”

“Hey… Class Monitor, aren’t you going to explain?”

“Don’t tell us we actually guessed right…”

Gossip, once it starts, is a terrifying thing.

Sometimes, choices were like this: a dilemma, caught between a rock and a hard place.

All because…

‘Normally, who could get injured like that on the short, flat, less-than-two-hundred-meter path from the auditorium to the classroom?! QingYu, please be more careful!’

Perhaps YuYang could avoid mentioning her tripping, simply concocting a reason, but that would, to some extent, make QingYu lose face in front of her classmates.

For example, instead of saying she tripped, YuYang could explain that someone had thrown something from a window when she reached the teaching building, hitting her forehead and injuring her.

This explanation might work in the short term and wouldn’t make QingYu lose face.

However, knowing these girls, they would surely investigate the surveillance footage out of anger, wanting to see which careless person had thrown something from upstairs and hit their little darling.

There were surveillance cameras near the teaching building. If the investigation showed nothing, QingYu would face an even more awkward situation.

Some burdens, you truly had no choice but to bear, especially when YuYang doted on Lin QingYu so much.

He sighed inwardly.

YuYang forced a wry smile. “Ah, actually, we did have a small disagreement today. I was just a little careless, and it led to…”

Before he could finish taking the blame, a faint voice from directly in front of them interrupted YuYang.

“I think… the Class Monitor isn’t that kind of person… This, this matter, surely has another reason…”

The speaker was Mo Sishi, YuYang’s deskmate.

YuYang never imagined that at this moment, Sishi would descend like a goddess!

‘Are you going to help me seek justice?!’

Zhou Fan heard her words and turned to look, a little surprised.

‘Hmm? Do we even have this classmate in our class? If we do, isn’t her presence a little too low?!’

Still, she had to ask, “Classmate, you say the situation isn’t what we’re guessing. Do you have any evidence?”

“Evidence…”

Under YuYang’s expectant gaze, Mo Sishi slowly began to speak.

“N-no evidence… I just feel that way…”

‘Sishi! You’re a goddess descending to offer your head to the enemy!’

“……”

The girls didn’t understand what Mo Sishi was suddenly saying and were about to ignore her to resume questioning YuYang. Just then, Luo Hao, who was copying math homework nearby, and a few other boys stood up to refute them.

“You’re also speaking without evidence! Yang Ge is definitely not that kind of person!”

“Exactly! It’s fine if you gossip usually, but at least don’t wrongly accuse someone in this kind of situation?! This is Yang Ge!”

“Don’t falsely malign him; they’re just holding up the banner of justice to ‘uphold justice,’ aren’t they~?”

YuYang just wanted to say… ‘Hao Zi, are you still not done copying your homework?!’

The boys’ sarcastic remarks instantly enraged the girls. They turned their focus, swiftly confronting the boys.

The commotion grew louder and louder, finally startling Lin QingYu, who had been deep in thought at the front, momentarily unaware of the situation.

She looked back in surprise, realizing the commotion seemed to revolve around YuYang.

Without a moment’s hesitation, she quickly hopped off her stool, pattered over with tiny steps, and stood beside YuYang.

“What’s going on?”

“It’s nothing important… just, uh, come closer.”

Taking advantage of the girls and boys arguing, YuYang quickly explained the situation to Lin QingYu.

“…In short, that’s how it is. To prevent you, my little dummy, from being too embarrassed, I’ll take the blame. You don’t have to say anything, understood?”

“……”

Lin QingYu, however, merely looked at YuYang with an expression that suggested he was an idiot.

“?”

Before he could ask anything, Lin QingYu used her uniquely penetrating voice to quell the chaos in the classroom.

“Stop arguing!!”

Click.

Both the boys’ and girls’ factions ceased their arguments simultaneously upon hearing her voice.

Zhou Fan, the leading girl, seeing the loli herself present, quickly asked with concern, “QingYu! If you have any grievances, just speak them out! We are all here to support you!”

‘How could such baseless words be spoken with such righteousness?’

QingYu shook her head. With the entire class quietly listening, she spoke each word with remarkable composure.

“The situation is very simple. On the gravel path back to the classroom, I accidentally tripped and hit a stone. Stop, no need to question it; I’m telling the truth. After all, hitting my head isn’t a one-time or two-time occurrence.”

‘No, no, QingYu, don’t say that with such pride!’

Seeing the entire class stunned, QingYu paid no mind, walking back to her seat and speaking as she went.

“YuYang merely took me to the infirmary. That’s the entire story. Simple, isn’t it?”
