Chapter 152: The Devil’s Temptation

Outside the room, the Mad Hatter leaned against the wall, covering his face, struggling immensely to stifle his booming laughter.

He had happily eavesdropped on the entire conversation, realizing that the dialogue between the two women was utterly mismatched.

‘How truly fascinating these two youngsters were!’

Not far away, two passing Tea Party members glanced his way.

“What is our boss doing now?” the younger member asked their older senior.

“Just his usual antics. Don’t mind him,” the senior replied calmly.

Then, the Mad Hatter heard Alice’s voice drift out from inside:

“You’ve been imprisoned for so many days and just rescued from the execution ground. You should rest and recover properly first. I’ll have someone arrange something for you. I won’t disturb you further for now.”

“Wait, wait a moment!” Jeanne Decker tried to explain something, but her tongue felt clumsy, unable to find the right words.

Moments later, Alice pushed the door open and stepped out of the room.

Stepping out, she immediately came face to face with the Mad Hatter, who was standing right at the doorway.

“Mad Hatter, what are you doing here?” Alice asked, quite surprised.

“Oh, I was waiting to hear the outcome of your talk. So, did she agree to join us?” the Mad Hatter replied, fabricating an excuse without a change in expression.

“I haven’t even asked yet. We can discuss that later; for now, let’s find her a place to rest,” Alice said, letting out a long sigh.

“Is something wrong?” the Mad Hatter asked, feigning ignorance, while simultaneously using his devilish ability to peer into her soul.

From her soul, he discerned negative emotions of dissatisfaction and resentment.

“It’s just a small issue between her and me,” Alice sighed. “It’s nothing. I just need to think things over by myself first. It’s not that I’m trying to avoid it.”

“Alright, you must be tired too, aren’t you? Would you like to rest for a while in the room in that corner? Here’s the key; no one will disturb you there.”

The Mad Hatter handed the key to Alice, pointing towards the end of the corridor.

“Hmm,” Alice nodded, took the key, and slowly walked towards it.

After watching Alice depart, the Mad Hatter cautiously pushed open the door to the room and peered inside.

He saw Jeanne Decker clutching her head in frustration.

‘I messed up… I actually angered my savior!’

Jeanne Decker felt a pang of regret.

‘But why would that witch appear so hurt and angry over such a thing? If it was merely to satisfy a whim, approached with a playful mindset, she wouldn’t have reacted like that.’

‘Could it be that she is… serious about me!?’

At this thought, Jeanne Decker suddenly felt her face flush with heat.

‘No! That’s not right! What am I thinking!? She did something so inappropriate without my consent before!’

Jeanne Decker found herself caught in a sudden dilemma, unable to distinguish whether she felt affection or resistance towards this witch.

This witch who made her… both love and hate.

She was completely unaware that at the doorway of the room, a devil who could see through people’s hearts was observing her with great interest.

The Mad Hatter watched various complex emotions intertwine within Jeanne Decker’s soul, and suddenly felt that this girl seemed to hold considerable value for teasing.

Just a casual remark earlier had stirred up such a significant reaction. If he were to give her a little push from behind, perhaps something even more interesting would unfold.

‘It’s time for some fun.’

With the mindset of someone who enjoyed watching drama unfold, the Mad Hatter cleared his throat to catch Jeanne Decker’s attention.

“Mr. Mad Hatter?” Jeanne Decker lifted her face in surprise.

“It seems you and my student didn’t have a very congenial chat?” the Mad Hatter smiled.

“I apologize, I think I said the wrong thing and upset her,” Jeanne Decker said, lowering her eyes.

‘Perhaps I should say I rejected her request?’ Jeanne Decker thought.

“With all due respect, she is your savior. To rescue you, she used up a significant promise, one that is almost equivalent to her own life,” the Mad Hatter said. “Wouldn’t it be a bit much to simply refuse her like that?”

“Refusing a benefactor’s request is indeed a bit unreasonable, but some things can be done, and some cannot,” Jeanne Decker said with difficulty.

“Is it something you are powerless to achieve?” the Mad Hatter asked.

“No, it’s just something I can’t quite accept in my heart,” Jeanne Decker replied softly. “I find it a bit hard to explain the specifics.”

She didn’t realize that in front of this man, she had a stronger desire to confide than usual. He simply asked, and she easily spoke her mind—a passive ability of the ‘devil.’

“Is it something outrageous and harmful?” the Mad Hatter feigned surprise. “Could she have gone astray?”

“No, it’s not that serious…” Jeanne Decker shifted her gaze somewhat shyly. “It’s purely something I personally cannot accept.”

“That’s a bit hard to justify, isn’t it?” the Mad Hatter chuckled. “What if this is her only request? Or what if you are completely powerless to fulfill her other wishes? Would you then feel completely at ease owing her this favor without ever repaying it?”

“I don’t have such thoughts!!!” Jeanne Decker exclaimed, looking up sharply in protest.

“Whether you have such thoughts is not important; what matters is the fact of whether you repay the favor. If you don’t repay it, you will forever owe her, won’t you?” the Mad Hatter said with a cheerful smile.

“This…” Jeanne Decker’s eyes widened.

Words from a ‘devil’ held more seductive power than those of an ordinary person, and the Mad Hatter’s speech deeply swayed Jeanne Decker.

“Precisely because this matter is not easy for you to accomplish, it holds value as a repayment, doesn’t it?” the Mad Hatter continued to fan the flames. “If she merely asked you to do something you could easily achieve, would your so-called repayment truly be equivalent to what she did for you?”

“Eh? This… this…” Jeanne Decker, somewhat bewildered, clutched her forehead. His rhetoric had completely confused her, and gradually, she suddenly felt that what he said seemed to hold some truth.

‘That’s enough,’ the Mad Hatter thought.

“If it’s merely a lack of courage or an internal hurdle you can’t overcome, perhaps I can help you,” the Mad Hatter grinned.

“You can help me?”

“I possess an ability that can remove some mental restrictions from a person without affecting their deepest fundamental thoughts, allowing them to act on something they previously dared not do,” the Mad Hatter said, raising a single finger. “Of course, for you, such an ability might be considered a heretical evil, so it just depends on whether you can accept it.”

The ‘Abyss Lord’s’ ability to extract soul fragments could also merely draw away a person’s self-control or shame, making them no longer restrain their thoughts—the legends of devils seducing people and leading them to fall were not entirely fabricated.

“I…” Jeanne Decker fell into hesitation.

“Her kindness isn’t worth that much to you, then? There’s nothing to be done,” the Mad Hatter said, shrugging as if to let her off the hook.

“No!” Jeanne Decker quickly denied. “I’m just considering…”

“I truly think you should give it a try. Sometimes, people bind their thoughts with factors like立場, identity, or beliefs. Occasionally trying to set aside these considerations allows you to confront your true inner feelings,” the Mad Hatter advised, adopting the posture of a sincere elder.

‘Confront my true inner feelings…’

Jeanne Decker nervously swallowed, and under the devil’s continuous temptation, she made her decision.

“Alright, then I’ll… give it a small try,” Jeanne Decker said, staring earnestly into the Mad Hatter’s eyes.

“That’s the spirit,” the Mad Hatter said, revealing a pleased smile.

‘Now, this is going to be a good show.’
