Chapter 159: A Queen’s Interrogation

Jeanne Decker stared, mesmerized, at the stunning red-haired young woman who appeared in the mirror.

She recognized the Blood Red Queen, who had once been paraded down Maplewood City’s main avenue. On that day, as a Holy Knight, Jeanne Decker had been temporarily conscripted by the Church’s forces to assist, and she had caught a distant glimpse of the Starry Night Queen.

Given Queen Isola’s unparalleled beauty, there was no chance of a mistake.

The Duchess Liddell instantly plastered a fawning smile on her face, turning to greet Queen Isola.

“Oh, Your Majesty, what brings you here—”

“Before I grow angry, cover your mouth, stand aside, and make not a sound. Do not let me hear you wagging your tongue again!” Queen Isola retorted coldly.

The Duchess Liddell immediately complied, covering her mouth and retreating to the side.

The Mad Hatter, standing before the magic mirror, had just begun to snicker when Queen Isola turned her face towards the mirror, her eyes fixed directly on him.

“Mr. Mad Hatter, what are you laughing about?” Queen Isola inquired.

The Mad Hatter promptly dropped his jocular expression, becoming somewhat more serious.

“Uh, I…” The Mad Hatter scratched his temple. “I remembered something happy?”

“What happy thing?” Queen Isola remained expressionless.

“I found some money today,” the Mad Hatter replied with a smile.

“Is that so.” Queen Isola did not press the matter further. “Then, when will you be returning from the Imperial City, sir? Perhaps we could discuss our collaboration further if the opportunity arises?”

“Next time, definitely, next time!” The Mad Hatter nodded vigorously, forcing a smile. “Unfortunately, I’ve suddenly found myself with more matters to attend to in the Imperial City, and my return date is still undecided.”

“Very well. Would it be convenient for you to step aside now so I may speak a few words?” Queen Isola asked.

“Of course, absolutely! Your command is my deed!” The Mad Hatter instantly doffed his hat in farewell, as if fearing Queen Isola might change her mind.

Before Jeanne Decker and Alice Liddell could even react, the Mad Hatter swiftly exited the room.

“Patra, you may leave as well.” Queen Isola turned to look at the Duchess Liddell.

The Duchess Liddell opened her mouth, intending to speak, but Queen Isola preempted her. “Have you forgotten my command?”

‘Your Majesty, you absolutely cannot back down now! They’ve already cut off your retreat! Even if you have peculiar habits, you shouldn’t let your emotions run wild! This is truly foolish!’, the Duchess Liddell thought.

The Duchess Liddell had a thousand words she wished to utter, but facing her sovereign’s gaze, she could only swallow them back down.

Only after the Duchess Liddell had also departed did Queen Isola finally look at Alice Liddell in the mirror.

“You’re fine, which is good.” Queen Isola nodded at Alice Liddell. “You haven’t exposed your identity, have you?”

Alice Liddell shook her head. “Don’t worry, it won’t affect the mission.”

“You should be more concerned about your own safety than the mission,” Queen Isola stated.

“Isola, I…” Alice Liddell hesitated, unsure whether she should explain what had happened here to Queen Isola.

“There’s no need to say more; I already know everything,” Queen Isola said calmly. “With my abilities, do you truly believe I couldn’t divine what you’ve experienced?”

Alice Liddell was immediately speechless.

“Alright, you may leave as well. I wish to speak with her alone for a few moments.” Queen Isola glanced at Jeanne Decker.

“Speak with Jeanne Decker alone?” Alice Liddell was quite surprised; she hadn’t anticipated Queen Isola making such a request.

“Yes,” Queen Isola replied calmly.

‘Yes, with her,’ Queen Isola calmly repeated.

These words instantly made Jeanne Decker nervous. The Starry Night Queen had intimidated both Madame Liddell and the Mad Hatter the moment she appeared. Even through the magic mirror, Jeanne Decker could sense the extraordinary aura emanating from Her Majesty.

More crucially, from their previous conversation, she could infer that the Red Queen and Alice Liddell—who was, in fact, Levi—shared an unusual relationship.

Alice Liddell looked at Jeanne Decker, then back at Queen Isola. Ultimately, she couldn’t think of any reason to refuse, so she simply nodded in agreement. “Alright, then. Will it be alright without me maintaining the divination?”

“Rest assured, I am the creator of this magic mirror; I can extend its effect,” Queen Isola responded.

With the conversation at this point, Alice Liddell could only hand the magic mirror to Jeanne Decker, telling her that by holding it, she could speak with Queen Isola, before exiting the room.

Now, only Jeanne Decker and Queen Isola faced each other across the mirror.

“A pleasure to meet you, maiden of the North. You must already know who I am, but allow me to introduce myself. I am Queen Isola of Starry Night City, the former Queen of the Starry Night Kingdom, and the Blood Red Queen, as you call me in your Holy Church of Salvation. It is a great pleasure to meet you.” Queen Isola initiated the greeting.

“Hello, Your Majesty. I am Jeanne Decker from the Northern Imperial Territory. You may call me Jeanne Decker.” Jeanne Decker politely returned the greeting. After a moment of thought, she decided against beating around the bush and asked directly, “Please tell me, was it you who rescued Levi from the Maplewood City dungeon?”

“Rather than saying I rescued her, it would be more accurate to say we relied on each other to escape our predicament together. She owes me nothing,” Queen Isola explained generally. “She was at death’s door, and to preserve her life, I transformed her into a witch. Later, we struck a deal with her: we would help her exact her revenge, and in return, she would assist us.”

‘Revenge? Does that mean after Viscount Dumpty’s death, Camilla has also faced retribution?’, Jeanne Decker mused.

“Then I must still thank you. Thank you for saving her, for accomplishing what I desperately wished to do but could not.” Jeanne Decker bowed solemnly to Queen Isola, genuinely grateful for her actions in this matter.

Queen Isola watched Jeanne Decker in silence for a while, then suddenly spoke. “I have seen everything you have done for her.”

Jeanne Decker looked up as if struck by lightning, too mortified to speak.

“Since you say you are grateful, can you answer one question for me, honestly and sincerely?” Queen Isola asked.

Jeanne Decker hesitated, then finally made up her mind, nodding forcefully at Queen Isola. “Please ask.”

“…” Queen Isola fell silent then.

“Your Majesty?” Jeanne Decker asked, a little confused.

“Very well.” Queen Isola took a deep breath, as if steeling herself, before finally asking, “Do you love her?”

Jeanne Decker’s eyes widened instantly. Although she had prepared herself mentally, she had not expected such a weighty question.

There was no way to feign ignorance, no way to avoid it. Both the questioner and the questioned understood the full implication of the query.

Jeanne Decker nervously swallowed, her mind in a chaotic tangle, utterly unable to formulate an accurate answer. Yet, in the end, her body inexplicably reacted.

She silently nodded to Queen Isola.

“So it is, then?” Queen Isola sighed deeply.

Jeanne Decker did not retract her gesture. After nodding, she was surprised to find her turbulent emotions suddenly settle—perhaps that spontaneous reaction had been her true feelings all along.

She looked at Queen Isola, hesitated for a moment, and finally mustered the courage to ask, “And you, Your Majesty?”
