Join the ServerDuke Bedford watched in astonishment as the flesh puppet in the corner began to move without his conscious command.
The grotesque creature suddenly turned and charged towards its master.
With no time to ponder the assassin’s methods, he could no longer maintain his composure. He frantically raised his staff, pointing it at his undead creation, and futilely commanded it to stop in his mind.
The flesh puppet showed no sign of obeying its master, its footsteps thundering across the floor like war drums.
Seeing that he was about to be crushed against the wall by the monster, Duke Bedford, in desperation, resorted to his final option. He attempted to destroy his own undead creation.
‘Necromancer, Corpse Explosion!’
The stitched human skin covering the flesh puppet immediately swelled. Then, the seams burst, and thick, viscous blood spurted out from within. Its body rapidly collapsed as if melting, much like a snowman thrown into a furnace.
To avoid harming himself, Duke Bedford suppressed the full power of the Corpse Explosion. He merely destroyed the flesh puppet itself, preventing the corpse poison-laden blood from splattering everywhere.
Fortunately, this Corpse Explosion did not fail. In an instant, the flesh puppet disintegrated before him into a pile of bones, a puddle of blood, and shattered human skin.
Duke Bedford breathed a sigh of relief, finally regaining his composure.
Then, his nightmare truly ended.
Back in reality, everything before his eyes remained almost unchanged, save for the position of the flesh puppet’s remnants. They had shifted from directly in front of him to the corner of the room.
Duke Bedford was utterly bewildered.
In truth, his flesh puppet had never lost control; everything had merely been a nightmare conjured by Alice Liddell.
Frightened by the nightmare, he had used Corpse Explosion without a second thought.
Alice Liddell, with a simple stratagem, had tricked Duke Bedford into personally destroying the flesh puppet that had been her most formidable obstacle.
Using a Dream Weaver ability on an opponent of the same rank from a distance would not yield strong or lasting effects. In fact, if Duke Bedford had been slightly more composed and harbored a sliver of doubt during the fight, he would have swiftly broken free from the nightmare.
Then, Alice Liddell leveraged the height advantage, seizing the opportunity to hurl a bottle of poison at the bewildered Duke. It exploded above his head, unleashing a lethal, toxic mist.
The moment he inhaled the poisonous mist, the instantly fatal toxin caused the Duke to feel suffocated. His ‘Death’ pathway abilities instinctively alerted him that he was rapidly approaching true demise.
Fear surged within him, and he hurriedly activated the ‘Death Exemption’ ability of his ‘Necromancer Mentor’ pathway. This allowed him to temporarily enter a state between life and death, where any lethal effects targeting living beings would only partially affect him.
The poison’s deadly effect was alleviated, and he struggled to retreat, distancing himself from the toxic mist.
‘He didn’t fall?’ Alice Liddell was slightly taken aback.
For this assassination, she had prepared the most potent poison, one that would take effect instantly upon even a small inhalation.
Yet, the Duke seemed to have… some strength left?
She couldn’t help but recall how the Killer had similarly used soul devouring to forcibly mitigate the corrosive effects of a potent toxin last time.
‘Are the poisons I concoct truly so ineffective?’
Recovering from the agonizing effects of the poison, Duke Bedford realized he had to retaliate. He began to manipulate the malevolent spirits around him.
‘Necromancer, Ghostly Entanglement!’
He intended to release these malevolent spirits to cling to the assassin above him. Every s*ave he had executed had died a gruesome death.
However, the moment he made a move, Alice Liddell saw through his attack strategy.
Duke Bedford, lacking confidence in combat, had summoned the malevolent spirits early as a precautionary measure. This made it easy to predict that in an emergency, his lack of combat experience would likely lead him to directly use these spirits to attack.
‘Such good fortune?’ Alice Liddell recognized a winning opportunity.
She immediately switched her ability to ‘Abyss,’ summoning corrosive flames into her palm.
The malevolent spirits, commanded by Duke Bedford, immediately surged toward Alice Liddell. By then, Alice Liddell had already hurled the corrosive flames.
Corrosive flames consumed souls as fuel. The devil’s currency, purified by the ‘Abyss’ ability, was akin to refined, pure fuel. While the malevolent spirits summoned by the necromancer were mixed with impurities and not as ideal for burning, they were certainly not immune. Corrosive flames were the bane of spiritual entities!
The fireball of corrosive flames, fueled by souls, collided with the first malevolent spirit and immediately exploded. The spreading flames swiftly engulfed the other spirits, creating a chain reaction.
Duke Bedford cried out in terror, raising his hands to shield his face, but the spreading flames still touched his body.
Fear and despair instantly surged from the depths of his heart. Seizing the moment while he was incapacitated, Alice Liddell swung the chandelier forcefully, sending it crashing towards the Duke’s position, then severed the chains holding it with her Demonic Claws.
The heavy chandelier, laden with candelabras, arced downwards, plummeting towards the Duke. Alice Liddell switched back to ‘Witch,’ spreading her ‘Succubus’ wings to descend gracefully.
With a thunderous crash, the Duke was caught off guard, slammed to the ground by the chandelier.
‘Pain! So much pain!!!’
The Death Exemption effect had slightly dulled the Duke’s sense of pain, preventing him from immediately fainting from the agony. The chandelier pinned his lower body, breaking his legs, leaving him unable to escape.
Then, the assassin gracefully landed before him.
“Wait,” Duke Bedford gasped painfully, raising a hand towards Alice Liddell. “Let’s negotiate, shall we? Everything I possess can be yours. I can even serve you, no problem. No matter who you are, the resources I’ve accumulated are surely valuable to you.”
His greatest obsession was to survive; otherwise, he wouldn’t have dared to touch the forbidden taboos of heresy. For this, he would give everything!
Alice Liddell pondered for a moment, then silently extended her hand, seemingly reaching out to help the Duke.
Just as a glimmer of hope sparked in Duke Bedford, Alice Liddell’s hand passed through his as if it were a ghost.
At the same time, a voodoo doll appeared in Alice Liddell’s hand. Only Alice Liddell could see the threads of destiny connecting the doll to Duke Bedford.
Then, Alice Liddell squeezed the doll tightly, almost crushing it.
Duke Bedford was immediately seized by a chilling sensation, followed by excruciating pain that coursed through his entire body, eliciting a horrifying scream. The damage feedback from the voodoo doll shattered most of his remaining unbroken bones, completely robbing him of the strength to resist.
“Your worth does not outweigh your sins,” Alice Liddell said coldly. “I fear even your life would not be enough to atone.”
Finally, she switched back to the power of ‘Abyss,’ manifesting the executioner’s Demonic Claws.
The time for execution had arrived; she was about to harvest Duke Bedford’s soul.
