Chapter 163: A Queen’s Jealousy and a Rival’s Understanding

A sudden silence fell, and Jeanne Decker’s heart began to pound uncontrollably.

She had been too nervous to give a proper response when previously questioned by the Mad Hatter.

Now, under Queen Isola’s direct inquiry, she instinctively revealed the answer hidden deep within her heart. It was the first time Jeanne Decker had ever confessed the romantic feelings she harbored for Levi.

For some inexplicable reason, as she looked at Isola, she vaguely sensed that this woman could truly understand her, prompting her to respond without conscious thought.

She was incredibly nervous. Having finally acknowledged her deep affection for Levi, she now desperately awaited Isola’s answer, aware that something significant had also transpired between Isola and Levi.

Honestly, she feared Isola might give an affirmative reply. Jeanne Decker couldn’t deny that the Red Queen’s charm far surpassed her own; facing such a formidable rival in matters of the heart felt utterly despairing.

Isola remained motionless on the screen for several long seconds, prompting Jeanne Decker to fall into a perplexed state.

‘Is it frozen?’

She turned the magic mirror over and over, even tapping its surface with her hand.

“I…” Isola finally spoke.

Jeanne Decker immediately fixed her gaze on the mirror.

Under her eager scrutiny, Isola slowly uttered the latter half of her sentence: “It’s probably just as you imagine.”

This enigmatic reply left Jeanne Decker stunned. “Just as I imagine? What exactly is that?”

“Must I spell it out word for word for you to feel even more embarrassed?” Isola frowned, a hint of annoyance and laziness crossing her features, as she averted her gaze.

This sight made Jeanne Decker hold her breath.

‘Could she be any more adorable?’ ‘Was this truly the same majestic Queen who had just compelled the Duchess and the Mad Hatter to retreat?’

Even as she confirmed their rivalry, Jeanne Decker couldn’t help but feel a pang of ‘pity’ for Isola, finding her utterly charming.

“Your Majesty, you’re quite a shy person, aren’t you?” Jeanne Decker spoke her thoughts directly.

Caught so candidly, Isola had no retort, opting instead for silence.

With everything laid bare, Jeanne Decker found herself at a loss for words for a moment. The awkward silence stretched on, but she eventually couldn’t bear it any longer. She directly questioned Isola’s intentions: “Did Your Majesty seek me out solely to confirm this? Or… do you wish for me to relinquish my feelings?”

Jeanne Decker was not one for beating around the bush in such matters, preferring to ask everything outright.

“I have no right to demand you give up anything,” Isola said, lowering her eyes. “Even I have only just confirmed my own feelings. I do consider her a special person, but I was merely trying to ascertain if that special feeling was indeed romantic love. I once saw your future through precognition and felt anxious about it, but I deliberately avoided the matter because I had a more important mission. I didn’t want my emotions to be disturbed by such things.”

“Until…”

“Until what happened today.” Isola suddenly met Jeanne Decker’s gaze. “I saw what you did in my divination.”

“I-I’m sorry.” Guilt made Jeanne Decker avert her eyes, apologizing reflexively.

“You should apologize to her, not to me,” Isola replied. “The fulfillment of the prophecy made me realize that no matter how much I tried to avoid it, it was futile. That feeling of being clawed at by a hundred devils, it couldn’t be concealed. I suppose this must be the first time I’ve experienced such intense jealousy.”

Jeanne Decker’s heart slowly sank. It seemed the Red Queen’s feelings for Alice Liddell were identical to her own.

“Then what exactly does Your Majesty intend to do?” Jeanne Decker posed her earlier question once more.

“How about this…” Isola pondered. “You ask her what she thinks, and that way, I can also know her answer through divination.”

“What? *I* go ask!?” Jeanne Decker exclaimed in shock. “Why must *I* be the one to ask?”

“If I tell you to ask, then you ask,” Isola stated.

“This…” Jeanne Decker felt her face flush again.

After what she had done, it was already difficult enough for her to face Alice Liddell directly and declare her feelings. How could she possibly have the nerve to brazenly ask, ‘Choose me or her?’

Moreover, she was terrified of receiving an answer she didn’t want. If rejected, how would she ever face Alice Liddell again?

Jeanne Decker, usually brave and fearless, uncharacteristically felt like retreating.

“Why doesn’t Your Majesty ask?” Jeanne Decker countered. “Don’t you like her too?”

“Didn’t you just thank me for saving her? So, you ask,” Isola conceded nothing.

“That’s completely unfair!” Jeanne Decker grew a little agitated. She thought for a moment, then threw out another question. “Then, if she chooses me, will you willingly give up? Please answer me seriously!”

“I…” Isola hesitated instantly.

Without an immediate affirmative reply, Jeanne Decker’s heart immediately understood.

“If that’s the case, then there’s no point in me asking,” Jeanne Decker said, her tone tinged with helplessness.

It seemed the troublesome aspect of this love rival wasn’t just her charm. Her deep affection meant she wouldn’t give up easily.

At that moment, from the crack in the door behind Isola, the Duchess Liddell’s voice of support drifted out. “You absolutely cannot give in, Your Majesty! This concerns the dignity of the Night Kingdom! It doesn’t matter if Alice disagrees; with your abilities, if you can’t win against such a young lady, how can you call yourself the Queen of Witches in the future?”

“Patra!” Isola turned her head, blushing with indignation. “How dare you eavesdrop!?”

The door crack closed again, and the Duchess Liddell immediately fled far away.

Jeanne Decker watched this scene, speechless, unsure what to say. ‘Well, then, just pretend I said nothing.’

Isola adjusted her expression, looking back at Jeanne Decker. “I cannot restrict your actions. Though I am not by her side, my divinations can foresee what she experiences. From now on, I will also take action when appropriate. We are, in a sense, on the same starting line, so this can be considered fair.”

Jeanne Decker paused, then couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, I appreciate a straightforward approach.”

“However, there is one thing I must warn you about first,” Isola suddenly said.

“Is it… forbidding me from doing such things again?” Jeanne Decker recalled the earlier events, her voice immediately softening. “Don’t worry about that, Your Majesty. Even if you asked me to, I couldn’t do it again.”

“No, I hope you never appear before me again,” Isola stated.

Jeanne Decker’s eyes widened in surprise.

“With the disparity in our power, I could kill you with a single word. I am truly unsure what I might do out of jealousy, but no matter what, I don’t wish to do anything that would make her hate me.”

Isola spoke with earnestness.

Jeanne Decker understood. In a way, this was the greatest kindness Isola could show her.

“I understand.”

Jeanne Decker nodded.

The two women met each other’s gaze, suddenly sensing a mutual understanding. When it came to matters of the heart, they were indeed very similar.

“Hmm?” At this, Jeanne Decker suddenly realized something and asked, “Your Majesty, if I may ask, what did you mean by ‘on the same starting line’? Does that mean you and she…”

Isola’s expression stiffened. She immediately swiped a hand across the mirror’s surface. “Let us part ways here. Farewell!”

As soon as her words fell, the image in the magic mirror vanished.
