Chapter 12: A Rescue in the Library

“M-Miss Lin…” Huang Runqi’s voice began to tremble.

“How dare you touch someone of mine?” Lin Wan’s voice was low, yet it silenced the entire reading room.

She stepped forward, and just as Huang Runqi attempted to scramble up, she delivered another clean, precise kick to his lower body.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t know she was your woman!” Huang Runqi clutched himself, drenched in cold sweat. “I was blind! I’ll get out of here right now!”

“Get out?” Lin Wan scoffed. “You think this is over?”

She pulled out her phone and quickly typed a message to her butler: “Investigate the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Report any issues directly to me.” She didn’t spare Huang Runqi another glance, as if he were already dead.

The woman standing before Luo Xiaoyun was about 1.75 meters tall. The cuffs of her white shirt were casually rolled to her elbows, revealing the smooth lines of her forearms.

Her long black hair was tied in a sharp high ponytail, and her brows and eyes were as sharp as blades.

She didn’t even look at Huang Runqi on the floor. Instead, she turned immediately to face Luo Xiaoyun behind her.

Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, Lin Wan’s pupils contracted almost imperceptibly.

The person before her was even more exquisite than she had imagined. Her silver-white hair flowed like moonlight-woven silk, setting off her small, porcelain-white face.

Her crystalline eyes were now misty with tears, the corners tinged red, and her long lashes held teardrops that were about to fall. Beneath her cyan skirt, her slender calves trembled slightly.

She looked like a startled fawn, so fragile it made one’s heart ache.

And then there was that faint scent of jasmine.

Lin Wan’s breath hitched. Moved by the poignant sight, a wave of tenderness washed over her. She wanted nothing more than to shield this person firmly behind her, letting no one disturb her ever again.

“You…” she began, only to find her own voice faltering. “Are you alright?”

Luo Xiaoyun stared blankly at her sudden savior. The woman was half a head taller than her, and her sharply handsome face now wore an expression of gentle concern. She shook her head instinctively, her voice still thick with tears: “I-I’m fine…”

“Your hand.” Lin Wan said softly, her gaze falling on the reddened wrist.

She carefully lifted that hand, her movements as delicate as if handling fragile porcelain. A distinct red mark circled the wrist bone, stark against the nearly translucent skin. Lin Wan’s brow furrowed deeply, a flash of ferocity passing through her eyes.

“Does it hurt?” she asked, her fingertips brushing lightly over the edge of the swelling.

The cool touch made Luo Xiaoyun flinch, but not from pain. Rather, it was a strange shiver that ran through her as Lin Wan’s fingers traced her skin.

“I-It’s okay…” she whispered.

Lin Wan took a tube of ointment from her bag, squeezed a small amount onto her fingertip, and then applied it gently and slowly over the red marks.

The ointment was cool, but her fingertips were warm. The interplay of temperatures made Luo Xiaoyun’s ears burn.

“Next time you meet someone like this,” Lin Wan said, her head bowed, her voice soft but every word distinct, “just slap him, or call out my name.”

“…Senior’s name?”

“Lin Wan.” She looked up, her eyes deep. “Remember it?”

Luo Xiaoyun nodded. She had heard that name before—the eldest miss of the Lin family in Haishi, the heir to the school’s largest donor, a legend in the forum gossip posts.

“Th-Thank you, Senior Lin…”

“Call me Lin Wan,” she corrected, a faint smile curling at the corner of her lips. “Or Wanwan, whatever you like.”

The address was too intimate, and Luo Xiaoyun’s face flushed even more.

Lin Wan’s gaze softened when she looked at Luo Xiaoyun. “Were you scared?” She naturally reached out and tucked a stray strand of silver hair behind her ear. “Do you want to sit down and rest? I have water here.”

Her fingertips accidentally brushed against Luo Xiaoyun’s ear, causing her to tremble slightly.

“I… I’ll treat you to lunch, Senior.” She suddenly spoke, her voice still strained. “Thank you for helping me out.”

A flicker of surprise passed through Lin Wan’s eyes, followed by a genuine smile. “Alright.” She answered too quickly, far too quickly for the usually reserved and composed eldest Miss Lin. “But it should be my treat.”

“That won’t do—” Luo Xiaoyun started to protest, but her voice faded when she met Lin Wan’s smiling gaze.

“Then next time, you can treat me.” Lin Wan smoothly took her uninjured hand. “I know a nice restaurant nearby. Quiet, a good place to talk.”

Her hand was warm and strong, completely enveloping Luo Xiaoyun’s. This time, Luo Xiaoyun didn’t pull away, letting herself be led out of the library.
