Join the ServerLin Wan’s car was parked by the roadside—a silver sports car with elegant lines.
A faint fragrance filled the cabin, identical to the scent that clung to Lin Wan. The car glided smoothly into the street before Lin Wan asked softly, “Any dietary restrictions?”
“None.” Luo Xiaoyun shook her head, her gaze fixed on the flowing streetscape outside. After a moment, she murmured, “Today… thank you so much.”
“You’ve said that several times.” Lin Wan chuckled softly. “If you really want to thank me, just eat more later. The desserts there are excellent—I think you’ll like them.”
Her tone was so natural that Luo Xiaoyun’s tense nerves gradually relaxed. She secretly studied Lin Wan’s profile in the rearview mirror.
A straight nose, a defined jawline, lips slightly pursed in concentration. There was an indescribable delicacy in her heroic bearing.
“Why are you staring at me?” Lin Wan suddenly asked, her eyes still on the road but her lips curving into a smile.
Caught red-handed, Luo Xiaoyun felt her cheeks burn. “I… I wasn’t…”
“Go ahead and look.” Lin Wan turned the steering wheel, her voice laced with amusement.
The car stopped in front of an elegant white building. The restaurant’s sign was understated—just a single line of slender French script.
Lin Wan led her inside. The waiter clearly knew her, respectfully guiding them to a window seat.
Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows lay a meticulously tended courtyard, with bamboo shadows swaying and water trickling. The atmosphere was so serene it felt less like a restaurant and more like a private tea house.
“A friend of mine runs this place; it’s usually not crowded.” Lin Wan slid the menu toward her. “See what you’d like to order.”
Luo Xiaoyun opened the menu, and her fingers paused at the prices—stunned.
“My treat today. Don’t even look at the prices.” Lin Wan seemed to read her mind, her voice gentle. “Just order what you like.”
In the end, following Lin Wan’s suggestions, they ordered foie gras, pan-seared cod, and the crème brûlée that Lin Wan highly recommended. While waiting for the dishes, Lin Wan poured her a glass of lemon water.
“Your hair,” Lin Wan’s gaze settled on her silver-white locks, “did you dye it yourself? The color is very unique.”
Luo Xiaoyun instinctively touched her hair tips. “Mm… sort of.”
“It suits you well.” Lin Wan said this with a gaze as focused as if admiring a work of art.
Such direct praise made Luo Xiaoyun’s ears redden again. “Senior’s hair is beautiful too—so black and long…”
“Call me Lin Wan.” She corrected again, her fingertip lightly tracing the glass. “Or Wanwan—either is fine.”
The nickname ‘Wanwan’ felt too intimate. Luo Xiaoyun opened her mouth but couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Fortunately, the waiter arrived with the dishes, breaking the delicate atmosphere. The foie gras was rich, the cod tender, and every dish was exquisite.
Lin Wan ate with elegant composure, yet she kept an eye on Luo Xiaoyun, naturally passing her the condiments.
“You’re majoring in economics?” Lin Wan asked casually while cutting the cod.
“Mm, first year.”
“I’m a sophomore, but I’m studying finance.” Lin Wan smiled. “If you ever have questions about your major, feel free to ask me.”
“Thank you, Senior… no, thank you, Lin Wan.” Luo Xiaoyun corrected herself in time.
The smile in Lin Wan’s eyes deepened. “That’s more like it.”
When the crème brûlée was served, Luo Xiaoyun’s eyes visibly lit up. Lin Wan gently pushed the dessert toward her. “Try it—this is their signature.”
Sweet without being cloying, silky smooth. Luo Xiaoyun took a bite and squinted in satisfaction. That childlike expression softened something in Lin Wan’s heart, and a protective instinct she’d never felt before quietly took root.
“Is it good?”
“Mm!” Luo Xiaoyun nodded vigorously, a bit of caramel crumb still at the corner of her mouth.
Lin Wan almost reached out to wipe it away, but held back. Instead, she gently pushed the napkin over. “If you like it, we can come often.”
The meal lasted nearly two hours. Most of the time, Lin Wan led the conversation—from studies to hobbies, then to interesting places in Haishi. She always looked into Luo Xiaoyun’s eyes when speaking, which made Luo Xiaoyun shy.
When they left the restaurant, it was already afternoon.
On the way back to school, neither spoke much. Soft music flowed through the car, the atmosphere quiet and comfortable. Only when the car stopped at the school gate did Luo Xiaoyun thank her again earnestly:
“Today… thank you really. The lunch was delicious.”
“I’m glad you liked it.” Lin Wan turned sideways to look at her, the car’s light softening her features. Then she took a delicate folding umbrella from the storage compartment. “This is for you. The forecast said it might rain later.”
Luo Xiaoyun took the umbrella, the handle still warm from Lin Wan’s palm. “Thank you…”
“No more thank-yous.” Lin Wan chuckled, then suddenly leaned over…
Luo Xiaoyun’s breath caught.
Lin Wan only reached over to unbuckle her seatbelt, but the distance was close enough to see the curve of her lashes, to smell her faint fragrance.
The position held for two seconds before Lin Wan retreated to her seat, expression unchanged. “Go on, get back. See you.”
“See you.”
Even after the silver sports car disappeared into the traffic, Luo Xiaoyun stood there, clutching the umbrella tightly.
The evening breeze brushed past. She raised her hand to touch her earlobe—it was burning hot.
In the car now far away, Lin Wan held the steering wheel with one hand, the other pressed lightly against her lips.
Recalling the satisfied look on Luo Xiaoyun’s face during the meal, she smiled to herself. ‘What a simple little girl.’
