Chapter 90: Shopping for Nuomi

Half an hour later, the two arrived at a pet store.

As soon as they entered, Nuomi turned around in the cat carrier, its little paws pressing against the mesh window, its round eyes curiously taking in the surroundings.

The pet store was large, with everything imaginable. One entire wall was covered with all kinds of pet clothes: red Christmas-themed capes, fluffy rabbit-eared onesies, cool little cowboy vests…

Luo Xiaoyun, as if discovering a new world, pulled Su Muxue toward that wall.

“Mu Xue, look at this!” She picked up a red Christmas cape with two fluffy little horns on the hood. “This is so cute!”

Su Muxue took it, looked it over, then glanced at Nuomi in the carrier. “Isn’t it too big?”

Luo Xiaoyun held the cape next to the carrier to compare. “Maybe a little… How about this one?” She picked up a striped onesie, pink and white, with a small pocket on the back.

Su Muxue took the onesie and held it up against Nuomi. “This one should be about right.”

Luo Xiaoyun then picked up a cream-colored little sweater embroidered with a small dried fish. “This one is pretty too! We have to try this one!”

Su Muxue laughed at her ‘I want them all’ attitude. “Pick one or two to try on her first, see if they fit.”

Reluctantly, Luo Xiaoyun put the other clothes back, taking only the striped onesie and the cream sweater. She carried the carrier into the fitting area.

She opened the carrier and lifted Nuomi out.

Nuomi stood on the soft mat, still confused, when Luo Xiaoyun lifted its front paws and slipped them into the pink-and-white striped onesie.

Nuomi looked down at the clothes on its body, then up at Luo Xiaoyun, its eyes clearly saying, ‘What did you put on me?’

It took two steps, as if walking on cotton, not knowing how high to lift its legs, wobbling like a drunken penguin.

“Hahaha…” Luo Xiaoyun couldn’t stand straight from laughing. “Mu Xue, look! It looks like a little penguin!”

Su Muxue leaned in to look and started laughing too. Nuomi heard the laughter, lifted its head, and stared at them blankly, tail held high, not understanding what the two humans were laughing about.

“It seems like it doesn’t like it,” Su Muxue said.

The moment she finished speaking, Nuomi started kicking at the clothes with its back legs, trying to pull them off.

“No, no, no…” Luo Xiaoyun quickly held it down. “If you don’t like it, we’ll change. Don’t ruin it!”

She took off the onesie and put on the cream-colored sweater. The sweater was soft and loose on its body, with the collar just right to expose Nuomi’s little head.

Nuomi lowered its head to sniff the sweater, then looked up at Luo Xiaoyun. This time, it didn’t struggle or try to take it off. It just tilted its head and quietly stared at her with its amber eyes.

“It likes this one,” Su Muxue said.

Luo Xiaoyun could tell too. Nuomi’s tail was raised higher than usual, and its little paws padded on the mat, as if getting used to the new clothes.

“This one it is!” Luo Xiaoyun clapped her hands.

Su Muxue rummaged through the racks again and picked up a brown bear onesie. The hood had round bear ears, and there was a short fluffy tail at the back.

“Want to try this one too?” She handed the clothes to Luo Xiaoyun.

Luo Xiaoyun took it and put it on Nuomi. With the bear outfit on, Nuomi’s round body looked even cuter. The bear ears stood on its head, the fluffy collar wrapped around its little neck, and it wobbled as it walked, just like a little bear toy.

“This is way too cute!” Luo Xiaoyun’s eyes lit up. She quickly pulled out her phone and took many photos of Nuomi, murmuring, “Our Nuomi is the cutest little cat!”

After they picked, the shop assistant smiled and packed up the two clothes, and thoughtfully gave them a small cat hair clip. “This clip is a gift for your kitty. It looks even better with the clothes, and she can wear it for fun normally.”

Luo Xiaoyun clipped the hairpin beside Nuomi’s ear. Nuomi shook its head, but the clip didn’t budge. It tilted its head and looked at Luo Xiaoyun, its eyes carrying a hint of resignation that said, ‘Whatever makes you happy.’

Luo Xiaoyun checked her phone and asked Su Muxue, “What time is the movie tonight again?”

“Eight.”

“That’s still early.” Luo Xiaoyun thought for a moment. “Want to go to the mall next door and get something good to eat?”

Su Muxue nodded. “Sure, but what about Nuomi? It’s not very convenient to carry her around.”

Luo Xiaoyun thought for a moment, then turned to the pet store owner. “Boss, could you please watch our kitten for us? We’ll go eat at the mall next door and come back to pick her up later.”

The owner was an auntie in her forties, cheerful and straightforward. She agreed without hesitation. “No problem, leave her here. There are a few kittens in the back, she can play with them.”

“Thank you so much!” Luo Xiaoyun placed the carrier and the bag of new clothes by the counter. She crouched down, lifted Nuomi out of the carrier, and gently patted its head. “Little Nuomi, you stay here and play with the other kittens for a while. I’ll come pick you up later.”

Nuomi looked up at her and let out a soft meow. “Meow…”

The sound was thin and soft, as if saying, “Okay, come pick me up early.”

Luo Xiaoyun gave Nuomi’s head a final pat, then stood up and took Su Muxue’s hand as they walked out of the pet store.

The cold wind outside hit them in the face. Luo Xiaoyun shrank her neck and leaned closer to Su Muxue.

“Let’s go eat,” Su Muxue said, tightening her grip on Luo Xiaoyun’s hand, interlacing their fingers.

The two walked side by side toward the neighboring mall. Inside the pet store’s glass door, Nuomi lay on the counter, watching their retreating figures through the window, its tail wagging gently.
