Chapter 59: Even the Pastry in Her Mouth Lost Its Flavor

Night fell.

Bai Yue pushed open the door.

Xiao Yueluo was already sitting on the edge of the bed.

After a full day of catching up on sleep, the dark circles under her eyes had faded considerably.

Though she still seemed somewhat lethargic, she had at least regained the appearance of a living person.

At her feet, the wooden bucket filled with translucent mucus was ready and waiting.

The water spirits inside squirmed sluggishly, emitting wisps of chilling cold.

“Awake now?”

Bai Yue pulled over a chair, poured herself a cup of tea, and sat down.

Xiao Yueluo nodded, her gaze falling on the bucket as her throat bobbed involuntarily.

“Let’s begin.”

Bai Yue gave the command.

Xiao Yueluo took a deep breath and reached her hands toward her ankles.

This time, there were no stockings in the way.

Her shoes slipped off, exposing her bare, fair feet to the air.

Her toes curled slightly from nervousness.

“Put them straight in.”

Bai Yue took a sip of tea, her eyes fixed on her ankles.

“Don’t dawdle.”

Xiao Yueluo bit her lower lip, closed her eyes, lifted her feet, and slowly lowered them into the bucket.

“Hiss—”

The moment her soles touched the mucus, Xiao Yueluo sharply inhaled.

It was too cold.

This wasn’t the cold of a winter wind—it was an extreme, bone-chilling freeze that seemed to pierce straight through to her marrow.

“It feels different from last time—so much colder.”

“Calm your mind.”

Bai Yue set down her teacup, her voice carrying a hint of sternness.

“Guide the innate qi—through Yongquan, past Taixi, into the Shaoyin Kidney Meridian!

Don’t focus on the flesh!”

Xiao Yueluo said nothing, her body trembling uncontrollably.

She forced herself to gather her scattered focus.

Mobilizing the faint wisp of spiritual power she had recovered, she guided the cool energy seeping into her acupoints.

The mucus in the bucket churned more violently.

Pop!

A water spirit exhausted its essence and burst inside the bucket, dissolving into a murky pool of foul-smelling stagnant water.

A torrent of innate qi surged into Xiao Yueluo’s dantian like a flood.

The fragment of spirit root deep within her dantian, nourished by the innate qi, began to emit a faint fluorescent glow.

Xiao Yueluo collapsed onto the bed, gasping for breath.

She looked down at the bucket.

All the water spirits were dead, leaving only a pool of pitch-black, stinking putrid water.

“Is… is it over?”

Su Qingyan, who had been standing silently at the door the whole time, widened her eyes and hurried in.

Xiao Yueluo didn’t speak.

Trembling, she raised her right hand, palm facing up.

Whoosh—

An extremely faint water orb, no larger than a walnut, coalesced into shape in her palm.

Mobilizing spiritual power in a spirit-sealing land!

For her of just a few days ago, this would have been something she wouldn’t have dared to even dream of.

“Bai Yue…

I…”

Xiao Yueluo stared at the water orb in her hand, her eyes rimmed red, her voice choked with emotion.

“Don’t get too excited just yet.”

Bai Yue cut off her moment of self-indulgence coldly, rising to her feet and looking down at her.

“There are several more sessions ahead.

This is just the flimsiest paper bridge you’ve built.”

Xiao Yueluo’s hand trembled, and the water orb dissipated instantly.

“How much longer?”

She looked up, her gaze resolute.

“That depends on your absorption rate.”

Bai Yue tilted her head slightly.

“And just a heads-up—the quantities will keep increasing, and the water spirits will grow more active as well.”

Xiao Yueluo’s heart gave a lurch, a bad feeling creeping over her.

“The intensity… will probably increase exponentially, I’d say.”

A wicked smile curved at the corner of Bai Yue’s lips.

Exponentially?!

Xiao Yueluo froze.

The resolute light that had just flickered in her eyes now gave way to sharply constricted pupils.

Her mind uncontrollably replayed that bone-shattering cold that had felt like it could freeze even her soul.

And that had only been building “the flimsiest paper bridge.”

The quantities ahead would keep growing.

The water spirits would grow more active.

The intensity would multiply exponentially.

Each of those words hammered down like a heavy blow on Xiao Yueluo’s already frayed nerves.

“I…”

She parted her cracked lips, as if wanting to say something, but only a vague syllable escaped her throat.

Then a violent wave of dizziness washed over her.

Her legs gave way, and Xiao Yueluo toppled backward in a straight line.

“Yueluo!”

Just a second before the back of Xiao Yueluo’s head could hit the bedpost, Su Qingyan caught her securely from behind.

“Don’t worry.”

Bai Yue looked at Su Qingyan’s anxious expression.

“Her spirit was stretched to its absolute limit—she just passed out from exhaustion.

Let her sleep well, and she’ll be fine tomorrow.”

Bai Yue then produced the same pastries from the last time.

A sweet fragrance instantly filled the room, overpowering the stench of the dead water in the bucket.

Bai Yue picked up a piece and offered it to Su Qingyan.

“Want some?”

Su Qingyan swallowed hard, her feet carrying her forward almost involuntarily.

How could she possibly resist this temptation?

She’d searched everywhere in Tianji City but never found these pastries for sale—they had to be exclusive to the Du Xian Sect.

This only strengthened her resolve to join the Du Xian Sect.

Now it wasn’t just for Yueluo—it was so she could keep eating these delicious pastries forever.

Su Qingyan devoured them ravenously.

Her usually slender cheeks, now stuffed full, inevitably puffed out.

Combined with her perpetually cool, expressionless face, it created an irresistibly striking contrast.

Bai Yue rested her chin on one hand and simply watched her, the corners of her mouth lifting unconsciously.

So feeding someone was such an enjoyable experience.

Watching someone else finish everything you gave them did produce a peculiar sense of satisfaction.

No wonder those old fogies back in the day always liked to scatter spirit rice at the mountain gate to feed the cranes.

Bai Yue’s eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze growing increasingly tender.

At that very moment, Su Qingyan, who was struggling to swallow her pastry, keenly detected this line of sight.

She paused mid-chew.

Without turning her head, Su Qingyan glanced sideways with her peripheral vision at Bai Yue, who was seated to her side.

That glance made her freeze completely.

Bai Yue wore the exact same expression as last time—one of extreme doting.

An utterly absurd and terrifying suspicion began to grow like wild grass in her mind.

Calm down.

Su Qingyan told herself.

She quickly replayed everything that had happened over the past few days.

Could it be…

It clicked!

Having Yueluo wasn’t enough—she’d set her sights on Su Qingyan too?!

At that thought, Su Qingyan felt a chill shoot up from the soles of her feet straight to the crown of her head.

She looked at Bai Yue’s exquisite, coldly beautiful face.

Sure, Bai Yue was an incredibly, incredibly, incredibly good person—strong, gentle, and kind.

But…

She doesn’t want to let me go either?!

How terrifying.

Su Qingyan felt her entire worldview crumbling.

She hadn’t expected Bai Yue’s appetite to be this voracious!

As expected of a woman who could entertain herself all night long.

Now Su Qingyan felt that even the pastry in her mouth had lost its flavor.

She stopped chewing.

Bai Yue, seeing Su Qingyan suddenly frozen in place, looked puzzled.

“Hm?

What’s wrong?

Your face looks terrible.”
