Chapter 42: Are You There?

“I don’t have a sweet tooth,” Bai Yue replied casually.

She leaned back in her chair, propping her chin on one hand, her gaze settling on Su Qingyan with a hint of amusement.

Bai Yue knew very well that Su Qingyan loved flower cakes.

After all, in the game, Su Qingyan’s character info panel clearly and explicitly listed her favorite food—flower cakes.

Even her preferred brand and flavor were detailed in the setting materials.

Su Qingyan, of course, had no idea about Bai Yue’s inside knowledge.

All she knew was that these pastries were truly delicious.

Rolling the last bits of pastry crumbs into her mouth, Su Qingyan swallowed the sweetness, picked up the teacup in front of her, and took a sip.

She cleared her throat in an attempt to hide her embarrassment, though her eyes kept drifting back to the food box.

“Then I’ll have a few more, okay.”

“Of course, of course.”

Bai Yue held back a laugh, going along with her.

“They’re all yours.”

At this, Su Qingyan paused, her hand stopping halfway to a third piece.

She had brought them over but wasn’t eating any herself—that meant they were specifically for her.

But how did she know she liked these?

She looked up warily, mumbling indistinctly: “If you’re not… eating, why did you bring them?”

“No choice.”

Bai Yue shrugged, feigning innocence.

“This is all they had.”

Su Qingyan eyed her suspiciously.

Just then, a faint whimper came from the bed.

Xiao Yueluo’s brow furrowed slightly, her eyelashes fluttering as if she were about to wake.

Su Qingyan immediately dropped the flower cake in her hand, not even bothering to wipe her mouth, and rushed over anxiously.

She called out softly: “Yueluo?

Yueluo, are you awake?”

Xiao Yueluo didn’t open her eyes.

She only shrank deeper into the covers, her lips moving slightly, letting out a blurred murmur.

Su Qingyan leaned in to listen and barely made out two words.

“Cold…”

“Cold?”

Su Qingyan froze, instinctively reaching out to touch Xiao Yueluo’s forehead.

But the moment her fingertips made contact, Su Qingyan sharply drew in a breath.

It was ice-cold!

That wasn’t a living person’s body temperature!

Su Qingyan quickly slipped her hand under the covers and touched Xiao Yueluo’s arm.

The bone-chilling cold pierced straight through her fingertips, so frigid that Su Qingyan shivered violently.

“What’s happening?”

Su Qingyan’s face went pale with shock as she whipped her head toward Bai Yue.

“Why is her temperature dropping so fast?!”

Bai Yue didn’t answer.

She strode forward and flung open a corner of the blanket.

Following Bai Yue’s motion, Su Qingyan gasped.

On Xiao Yueluo’s pale skin, faint, rippling blue patterns had begun to emerge.

These patterns flickered with her breathing, brightening and dimming in rhythm.

The temperature in the room was plummeting at an alarming rate.

The leftover cold tea on the table, which Bai Yue hadn’t finished, now had a thin layer of frost forming on its surface.

“Her spiritual root is beginning to mutate.”

Bai Yue’s eyes turned sharp as she stared fixedly at those blue patterns, her tone growing serious and grim.

“Mutate?

Is that good or bad?”

Su Qingyan asked urgently, instinctively moving to warm Xiao Yueluo with her own body, but Bai Yue grabbed her arm.

“Don’t touch her!

Do you want to freeze your arm off?!”

Bai Yue barked sharply.

Startled by the command, Su Qingyan froze.

She looked down and saw with horror that the fingertips of the hand she had touched Xiao Yueluo with were now covered in a fine layer of frost.

The skin there had gone pale and stiff—completely numb, without feeling.

If Bai Yue hadn’t stopped her, that cold would have crept up her arm and into her heart.

Bai Yue watched the blue patterns growing denser on Xiao Yueluo’s body, her brow deeply furrowed.

“It can be considered good.”

Bai Yue turned to Su Qingyan, who had collapsed to the floor, and spoke slowly and deliberately.

“She’s currently merging with the water spirits’ source power.

If she gets through this, her spiritual root attribute will be reborn from the ashes—mutating into a one-in-a-million Ice Spiritual Root.”

“Ice Spiritual Root…” Su Qingyan repeated the words in a daze.

“Yes.

An extremely domineering and exceptionally rare talent.”

Bai Yue nodded.

“But she’s in so much pain right now…”

“It’s a necessary process.”

Bai Yue cut her off coldly.

By now, the room’s temperature had dropped considerably.

Thick icicles had visibly formed on the walls and window frames.

Su Qingyan’s lips had turned blue from the cold, her whole body trembling uncontrollably, yet she refused to retreat a single step, her eyes fixed on Xiao Yueluo on the bed.

Bai Yue turned to Su Qingyan and spoke slowly.

“However… with this level of cold leaking out, this shabby room won’t be able to conceal it.”

Sigh.

No choice!

She would have to expose herself!

Bai Yue let out a sigh.

“Back up against the wall.”

Bai Yue ordered without turning around.

Su Qingyan instinctively obeyed, retreating to the frost-covered corner, wrapping her arms around herself.

Bai Yue raised both hands quickly, her ten fingers moving in intricate patterns to form a complex, ancient seal.

A surge of immense spiritual energy—far beyond what this realm should possess—poured out of her without reservation.

This was not the mixed, impure energy of an ordinary rogue cultivator.

It carried an ethereal, lofty pressure, as if a deity from the ninth heaven were gazing down upon the mortal realm.

“Seal!”

Bai Yue let out a low shout, pressing both hands downward.

A pale golden array pattern radiated from her, spreading across the floor in an instant.

Like an impenetrable net, the pattern climbed up the walls, wrapping the entire room in the blink of an eye.

The raging blue cold slammed against the golden array, emitting a dull hum, yet could not leak a single iota.

Outside, the night remained calm, the sounds of insects rising and falling.

Time trickled by.

The blue patterns on Xiao Yueluo flickered faster and faster, finally bursting into a dazzling blue light.

The light illuminated the entire room.

Then, all the patterns retracted abruptly, sinking deep beneath her skin, leaving behind only a few suggestive red marks.

The temperature in the room finally stopped dropping.

Xiao Yueluo’s furrowed brow fully relaxed.

Her breathing grew steady and deep.

The frightening cold receded, replaced by a living warmth.

Su Qingyan slid limply to the floor, then, seeing Xiao Yueluo return to normal, immediately scrambled over.

Bai Yue slowly lowered her hands, dispelled the array, and let out a soft breath.

Good.

It was contained.

However—

The moment the array was fully dismissed and Xiao Yueluo’s mutation ended—

A highly concealed wisp of spiritual energy pierced through the void without warning, locking onto the lingering trace of Bai Yue’s aura before it could fully withdraw.

Then, an encrypted communication, unique to the Du Xian Sect’s Piaomiao Peak, transformed into a faint sword hum and rang directly in Bai Yue’s ear.

It was an icy, yet slightly urgent voice transmission:

—Are you there?
