Join the ServerYoung Master Feng’s request for me to be his ‘big brother’ was ultimately politely declined.
I was no gangster, nor did I enjoy fighting every day. Yet, he remained persistent, insisting on treating me to a meal sometime before he left. After a moment of thought, I declined that offer too.
****
A few days had passed since the billiard hall incident. The group of ‘Kill Matt’ youths who used to gather outside the internet cafe had vanished. With one eye still swollen, I had, as I wished, settled into a peaceful routine.
Every morning, I cooked for Dragon Brother and Ming Hai. At noon, I cooked for Dragon Brother and Ming Hai. In the evening, I cooked for Dragon Brother and Ming Hai.
‘Truly peaceful, isn’t it? Or is fighting more exciting?’ I wondered.
Though the ‘Kill Matt’ gang, who had threatened Dragon Brother, had disappeared, she still spent her days at home, engrossed in games, leaving her room in a chaotic mess.
I simply let her be. Anything was better than her going out and causing trouble.
Old Han and Xiao Yao had gone home yesterday. Their house was quite close to mine, just a short walk across the street, less than fifteen minutes away, meaning they could visit anytime.
Today was another bright, sunny day.
Winter seemed to be drawing to a close. The morning sun was exceptionally warm, and the February breeze blowing into the room was pleasantly cool.
The weather was lovely, and I pondered whether to go out for a stroll. Opening a small crack in the window, I felt the air in the room instantly freshen.
Ming Hai had just woken up and was sitting on the sofa, lost in thought.
Feeling a little thirsty, I went to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water, then grabbed a tray and prepared three cups of lemon tea.
Dragon Brother was still playing games in her room. I casually carried a cup and walked in. She was engrossed in the screen, legs crossed, draped in a large red tracksuit.
Beneath it, she wore my oversized white T-shirt, which was noticeably loose on her, revealing one shoulder. Below, quite unselfconsciously, she wore only a pair of white shorts.
It was early morning, yet I inexplicably felt a surge of heat.
Averting my gaze, I tried my best not to look at the expanse of pale skin on her chest, and placed the cup on her table.
Dragon Brother let out a sigh, stretched languidly, then turned and smiled at me. “Thanks,” she said.
I nodded casually and exited her room. Ming Hai was still on the sofa. I offered her a cup of lemon tea, placing it on the table in front of her, but she didn’t even glance at me, instead staring blankly at the television.
Smiling, I asked Ming Hai, “Watching TV?”
Ming Hai paused, then turned her head to look at me, nodding.
I nodded in understanding, then picked up the remote control from the table and turned on the television.
‘Watching TV without even turning it on—a true master indeed,’ I mused.
I leisurely sipped my lemon tea, flipping through channels with the remote. Early in the morning, it was all period dramas and some remastered Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
After watching for a while, my interest waned. I flipped a few more channels, landing on the local news. Having nothing else to watch, I decided to settle for the news.
On the television, a reporter was enthusiastically showcasing the street behind them.
I frowned. ‘This place feels somewhat familiar,’ I thought.
The reporter introduced the nearby geographical location, then approached several citizens, asking if anyone had been causing trouble in the vicinity. The locals, simple folk carrying either vegetable baskets or birdcages, merely waved their hands, indicating they knew nothing.
I took a few sips of lemon tea, thinking, ‘What’s going on? Has some wanted criminal appeared around here again?’
‘This world is far from peaceful…’
Suddenly, the scene shifted. The anchor, staring at the screen, announced, “…That concludes our report. This incident at the billiard hall, where property was damaged, is rumored to be the work of local gangs. Police have now launched an official investigation…”
Upon hearing this, I promptly spat out a mouthful of lemon tea.
Ming Hai turned her head, glanced at me without a ripple of emotion, and then resumed watching the television.
I froze on the sofa.
‘Wait a minute, this is absolutely terrifying…’
To be honest, despite my usual banter, I was just a young, ordinary citizen. Hearing that a formal investigation had been launched, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of fear.
I sat on the sofa, pondering for a while. It seemed there was nothing to worry about; I hadn’t instigated the incident. After all, I was the one who was attacked first, and the one who suffered the most.
My eye was still swollen. At the very least, that counted as a minor contusion, didn’t it? It was good enough that I hadn’t pursued legal action for compensation; I could probably extort hundreds of thousands from them.
As Dragon Brother had said, even if they did come looking for trouble, we had acted in self-defense. An upright person fears no crooked shadow.
Those ruffians were prone to stabbing people with knives, and I suspected they all had criminal records. So, even if the police did get involved, Dragon Brother and I would likely only face a fine, probably just a few hundred yuan.
After considering this, a sense of calm settled within me.
Ming Hai continued to stare at the television. I suspected she wasn’t actually watching it; her gaze wasn’t even focused on the screen.
I watched Ming Hai, suddenly noticing she had changed her shirt. When she first arrived at my house, she wore a white one, but now she had on a blue one, likely bought when she went shopping with Old Han and the others recently.
This made me think of Dragon Brother, still wearing the tracksuit she’d bought from a street stall.
I glanced out the window.
The weather was perfect today, so I decided to take Dragon Brother out to buy some clothes.
****
Entering Dragon Brother’s room, I found it still filled with smoky haze. I waved away the smoke in front of my nose and opened the window.
Dragon Brother, clad in her tracksuit and shorts, was playing games. Seeing me enter, she merely turned her head for a glance before returning her focus to the computer screen.
“The weather’s so nice,” I remarked, “and you’re still playing games indoors?”
I leaned by the window, inhaling the fresh air from outside, then turned to speak to Dragon Brother.
Dragon Brother ignored me for quite a while. She was probably in a team fight, judging by the increased frequency of her skill presses, the keyboard clattering under her fingers.
I stood by, watching. After a long moment, she let out a sigh and said nonchalantly, “Just playing at home.”
Dragon Brother yawned, leaned back comfortably in her computer chair, and stretched languidly, her curvaceous figure fully on display.
I hastily shifted my gaze downwards. As I did, I noticed two shy-looking cigarette holes on the side of Dragon Brother’s large red tracksuit, seemingly staring at me.
I stared at the two cigarette holes. The month had just ended, and yesterday my parents had each sent me two thousand yuan for living expenses. Today, I absolutely had to get Dragon Brother out to buy some new clothes.
Dragon Brother finished her team fight, switched accounts, and began “brick farming.” In the inn, a character named Sai X Ya, with her bell-like voice, declared, “Today is another day full of hope!”
Dragon Brother chuckled, mimicking her like a fool. “Today~~ is also a day full of hope~!”
“Let’s go buy clothes in a bit. I’ll wait until you finish farming fatigue on this account,” I said, standing beside her after a moment of thought.
Dragon Brother responded lazily, “No, I don’t want to go~”
I felt a nerve twitching in my temple. After a moment’s thought, I said, “If you go, I’ll buy you a whole bunch of snacks when we get back.”
Dragon Brother suddenly jutted her backside, straightened up, her eyes almost glued to the screen. “Explode! …Damn, only a dog’s eye dropped.”
I rested my hands on the table, looked at her face, and said kindly, “Today, no matter what, you’re coming with me! If you come shopping for clothes, I’ll treat you to a meal. How about it? It’s much better than eating instant noodles, right?”
Dragon Brother turned to look at me, scratched her head, and said, “But I just ate, didn’t I?”
Hearing this, I thought, ‘Why the hell do I have to act like a subservient grandson just to buy you clothes?’ The amiable expression on my face instantly crumbled.
“I’ll get you a Sky Set! Stop farming, damn it, and come with me! Or I’ll kick you off the balcony later!”
At the mention of a Sky Set, Dragon Brother finally turned her head, contemplating me for a moment. “Alright, wait for me. I’ll put on some pants.”
Dragon Brother dressed incredibly fast. She wiggled her hips, pulled up her pants, and then came out with me.
We took a taxi to the mall that Old Han and the others had visited a few days prior. The mall was bustling with people, and Dragon Brother, still like a little delinquent, was digging in her ear and looking around.
I was wondering what to buy first when I noticed the strange looks from people around us. Turning my head, I saw Dragon Brother standing out dramatically in the mall.
Dressed in a festive mix of bright red and green, her carefree, mismatched style was comparable to “Brother Sharp,” who had been famous a few years back. Her look garnered almost a hundred percent of heads turning.
I felt my face flush with embarrassment. Taking Dragon Brother’s hand, I walked straight towards a women’s clothing store.
Seeing me pull her towards a women’s clothing store, Dragon Brother immediately struggled, asking, “What are you doing?”
I turned my head and said, “Buying clothes??”
Dragon Brother stared at me for a moment, then said, “Buying clothes? You want me to wear women’s clothing?”
I fell silent upon hearing that.
‘Yes, I suppose it really does mean making her wear women’s clothes…’
But today, no matter what, I had to make her wear… make her buy an outfit. I looked at Dragon Brother seriously. “Bai Hailong, I’m telling you, you’re not leaving today. Whatever I buy for you today, you’ll wear it. Understand?”
Dragon Brother yawned. “Didn’t hear you. I’m going home.”
“Sky Set,” I stated.
I pulled the resentful-looking Dragon Brother towards a women’s clothing store. Old Han had highly recommended this particular shop to me, saying that while the clothes were a bit expensive, they were all designer brands, of excellent quality, and offered a wide variety. Old Han, after all, had quite good taste in clothes.
“Welcome, how may I—”
The sales assistant, with a professional smile, was about to greet us, but seeing Dragon Brother’s casual attire, her voice trailed off.
Dragon Brother shot me a reproachful glance, then walked straight into the store. I followed behind her, smiling at the sales assistant. “Just looking for now,” I said.
The sales assistant stared at Dragon Brother’s retreating back for a moment. By the time I had already stepped inside, they snapped back to attention, hurried over, and chuckled, “Customer, uh, your girlfriend is truly beautiful.
It’s just that her style is a bit… *fierce*… Our store has all sorts of styles. If she just gets a proper makeover, she’ll definitely have an incredible aura…”
When the sales assistant described Dragon Brother’s style, they hesitated, choosing their words carefully, before finally settling on “fierce.” I chuckled at this, turning my head to look into the store.
Dragon Brother, hands in her pockets, was suspiciously glancing around like a little delinquent. I then asked the assistant, “Do you have any recommendations?”
The sales assistant smiled awkwardly and led me to a clothing rack. “These are our current bestsellers. Spring is almost here, and you can feel this fabric—the leather is exceptionally good. Plus, the style is very trendy. She’ll definitely look incredibly elegant in it…”
