Chapter 30: The Sleepy Morning and a Faked Date

Upon arriving home, Ming Hai and Dragon Brother were still asleep. The living room lay empty, and the kitchen sink held not even a pair of chopsticks. It seemed they hadn’t eaten, having gone straight to bed for what could only be described as a profound, world-obliterating slumber.

I settled onto the sofa and added both of their WeChat accounts, but neither responded. I recalled seeing them at KFC earlier; the Waitress had changed into simple casual clothes after Xiao Ling arrived. By now, I surmised, the two of them must be out exploring somewhere.

The Waitress from earlier was likely a temporary substitute—the kind who fills in briefly, receiving a small payment for their time.

Typically, these gigs arose when a regular part-time student had an unexpected conflict. They would post the address and pay on the campus network, and other students would take over for a day or half-day, earning a bit of pocket money—usually around fifty yuan.

Therefore, it was highly unlikely I’d see that particular Waitress at KFC again. This was probably a one-off for her, as only university students, with their abundant free time, were usually willing to take on these small jobs that barely covered the cost of a few packs of cigarettes.

Two WeChat accounts.

One profile picture featured a lazy kitten cradling a bouquet of flowers, and the WeChat name was ‘Sunflower’.

I glanced at the photos; the most recent update was from yesterday. The Waitress, looking shy, was hidden behind the delicate-looking girl, Xiao Ling, timidly flashing a V-sign. The background appeared to be a shopping mall, with a moderate number of pedestrians. I recognized it as the same mall Dragon Brother and I had visited before.

The other profile picture was far more uninhibited: an anime loli meme. A pigtail-haired loli lay on the ground, face streaked with tears, her chest downwards pixelated, with bold text beneath reading, “You think I wouldn’t face you head-on?” Her Moments feed was almost entirely game-related, a consistent stream of PUBG screenshots—each match boasting at least ten kills, indicating formidable skill.

As for this person, it was likely the delicate-looking girl named Xiao Ling.

To be honest, if I hadn’t met her in person, I would have assumed this was some hardcore gamer’s WeChat account.

Since neither of them replied to my WeChat messages, I sat idly on the sofa, scrolling through Weibo to pass the time.

In the afternoon, Dragon Brother finally emerged. She opened the door, her face still heavy with sleep, and stumbled out. Her upper body remained disheveled, her soft breasts half-exposed, and her pristine white shorts hung askew, revealing the curve of a small triangle.

She rubbed her eyes, looking at me. “You’re back.”

I nodded silently, watching as Dragon Brother made her way to the fridge, pulled out a bottle—or perhaps a jug—of water, and chugged down less than half of it. Then, yawning, she started back towards her room.

I called out to her, then fried an egg for her to eat, suggesting she warm her stomach before going back to sleep.

Despite living in the same house, I felt as though I barely saw Ming Hai and Dragon Brother anymore. Our schedules had completely diverged.

I resumed scrolling through Weibo on the sofa. Before long, Dragon Brother slowly finished her fried egg, rubbed her eyes once more, and retreated to her room to sleep.

It would be better to adjust both of their schedules.

As for Ming Hai, I’d leave her be. But for Dragon Brother, I’d make an effort to flip her schedule back to normal in a couple of days.

I used this very trick to reset my internal clock whenever I pulled all-nighters playing games, and it had never failed me.

All I had to do was keep her awake for a full day.

After Dragon Brother went back into her room, it was a little past five in the afternoon.

The sky began to darken as evening descended, casting the room into a growing gloom. Alone on the sofa, I scrolled through my phone, utterly bored, having already finished all the manga and other content I wanted to read.

Initially, I had idly considered chatting with those two girls, but by past nine in the evening, neither had replied. Seeing how late it was, I eventually returned to my room to sleep.

Before falling asleep, I set an alarm for seven the next morning.

Less than two months—it wasn’t particularly long, yet it felt too short.

During this period, I decided to spend time with the Old Master whenever I could.

The Old Master’s heart truly wasn’t in good shape, and Old Han’s reluctance to visit was understandable.

To be honest, I now felt that whatever the Old Master wanted to do was fine. He enjoyed these treats, so today I’d take him to KFC. There were no more dietary restrictions; he should just eat whatever he pleased.

If the Old Master’s true wish was to see Old Han, then Old Han would have no choice but to go. As for what might happen, no one could say. Old Han would eventually have to confront the Old Master, but the time wasn’t right yet.

What if the Old Master could live peacefully for another two months, only for Old Han’s visit to shorten his life by that very amount? That would be disastrous; we’d be no different from murderers.

It was better to delay as long as possible.

Early this morning, my alarm woke me, and I happened to catch Dragon Brother on her way to the bathroom. That rascal probably hadn’t slept all night again. She was still disheveled, wearing a short-sleeved top, scratching her backside through her white shorts. She looked at me, her eyes heavy with sleep, and asked, “Why are you always leaving so early these days?”

I wasn’t prepared to tell her about the Old Master; it was too complicated and lengthy a story.

Too lazy to explain at the moment, I simply said, “A date, you know. I’ve hooked a girl and I’m ready to ditch the single life.”

Dragon Brother froze, her hand pausing mid-scratch on her backside. She asked hesitantly, “Who did you hook?”

I shook my head. “Someone I met at KFC.”

Dragon Brother stared blankly at me for a moment, then foolishly scratched her backside again. She slowly shuffled closer, her voice laced with doubt. “You? You actually managed to hook a girl? She must look like, what, ET or something? What does she look like? Let me see!”

Since I had already made a casual fabrication, I decided to complete the story. I pulled out my phone and directly showed her the Waitress’s photo.

Dragon Brother’s head barely reached my chest. She stood on her tiptoes, turned sideways, one hand still resting motionlessly on her backside, and scrutinized the photo with suspicion.

After a good long moment, she grunted, then suddenly scoffed. “Your taste is absolutely terrible, you bastard!”

I was in a hurry to leave, but Dragon Brother was still craning her neck to see the picture. I casually pushed her face away, adjusted my collar in the mirror, and flashed a smile at my reflection. “Terrible? What are you talking about? This girl is great, so soft and adorable… Seriously, no kidding, I’m going to marry someone like her someday.”

Dragon Brother followed close behind me, suddenly letting out a cold snort. “Go to hell! What’s so good about this woman? In the photo, she looks like a damn idiot… Seriously, what garbage taste you have! Did a donkey lick your eyeballs? Oh, and you bastard, last time you took me to buy clothes, you said you’d buy me the Sky Set. Go buy it now! What are you dragging your feet for?”

Wondering what kind of fit she was throwing this early in the morning, I adjusted my collar, saying helplessly, “Buy, buy, buy… Can you wait until I finish my date with the girl and come back? Then I’ll buy you the Sky Set, okay?”

Of course, I was just teasing her. Who would I be going on a date with? Old Man Han?

Dragon Brother continued to follow me, her sarcastic jabs relentless. “What did you just say? You want to marry her? That woman clearly isn’t decent, with that slutty look on her face. Why don’t you just admit she’s a call girl you found online and be done with it!”

Annoyed by her nagging, I continued to adjust my collar, ignoring her words entirely. I simply nodded repeatedly. “Right, right, right, we’re just going to…”

Dragon Brother stared at the floor, occasionally letting out a cold laugh, her arms crossed over her chest. “Then go on your date! I hope you get AIDS or syphilis or something, and just die out there!”

It was too early for such a combative tone, and I frowned slightly. I turned my head. “That’s enough, okay? Can you please not speak to me with that morning grumpiness?”

Dragon Brother suddenly clenched her teeth, her red eyes seemingly misting over with tears. She roared loudly:

“Yes, I *am* speaking to you with morning grumpiness, damn it! What are you going to do about it?!”

I was startled by her sudden shout.

I took a step back, feeling a touch of helplessness. Placing my hands on my hips, I said coldly, “What are you throwing a fit about this early in the…”

The words had barely left my lips.

Seeing Dragon Brother’s appearance, my voice suddenly faltered.
