Chapter 60: The Slap That Changed Everything

“…Where are you going at this hour?”

“What? Again?”

At the sharp rebuke, Lee Ah-seong fell silent.

“How dare you say ‘again’?”

“Sorry… It just slipped out…”

“You can’t even keep your own household under control, yet you’ve got plenty to say. At least the young man has some nerve.”

“Tsk. You’re completely useless.”

With that, Chae Il-joo left the room.

Perhaps it was fortunate that things ended there. At least today, Chae Il-joo did not seem to be in a particularly bad mood. Even though such a disturbance had occurred during a family dinner, something he valued greatly.

Lee Ah-seong guessed the reason was Go Ha-jin.

After Go Ha-jin had left the table, Chae Il-joo had remarked, “He’s just too adorable. He’s so bold and cheeky, but somehow I can’t bring myself to scold him.” He had spoken with a smile full of satisfaction.

The gleam in his eyes during that moment bothered Lee Ah-seong immensely.

It looked like greed.

And it wasn’t only today.

“What am I supposed to do…?”

He had been suspicious from the beginning.

From their very first meeting, Chae Il-joo had been unusually lenient with Go Ha-jin. From the moment he readily agreed to obtain Blue Moon for him. No, perhaps from the very first moment their eyes met.

There was nothing particularly special about him except that he was a dominant omega. Well, that alone was special enough. And he was younger than Lee Ah-seong.

Regardless, every time Chae Il-joo’s gaze lingered on Go Ha-jin, Lee Ah-seong felt his heart sink.

Was he worried about some disgraceful scandal within the family?

Embarrassed about facing society?

No.

Things like that didn’t matter.

What he could not accept was losing both his precious son and his husband, who was effectively the source of his power, to some insignificant omega.

That would be the same as losing the entire world.

“Team Leader Yang.”

“Yes, Director.”

“Find out where the Chairman is going. And who he’s meeting.”

Lee Ah-seong knew perfectly well that Chae Il-joo still kept numerous omegas around him.

Yet he pretended not to know.

The moment he brought it up, he feared he might lose his position.

So instead, he quietly dealt with any omegas who became troublesome.

Back then…

If Woo-seok had not been born at exactly the right time, he would likely have been nothing more than a figurehead spouse.

It should have been impossible, but what if that cunning omega somehow took his husband away as well?

Absolutely not.

He would never allow it.

Even if someone had to die.

‘Never.’

The only thing he could lend Go Ha-jin was his son.

And even that was only a loan.

Crash!

The crystal glass flew from Lee Ah-seong’s hand and shattered against the wall.

****

“Go Ha-jin.”

“…”

“I know you’re awake. If you don’t open your eyes now, you’re going to regret it.”

Woo-seok pressed a finger against Go Ha-jin’s lips.

The way he spoke sounded exactly like a threat.

“As if I slept so well… Is it morning already?”

“Don’t ever try acting. You couldn’t fool a kindergartener.”

“…Why did you wake me up? I wanted to sleep more.”

The truth was that he had been awake for quite a while.

But he didn’t really want to get up.

Partly because he felt embarrassed whenever he remembered the previous night.

“How’s your body? If something feels wrong, tell me. We used up all the ointment last night, so I’ll have to get more.”

He meant that ointment.

“I’m fine! R-Really, I think I’m completely fine!”

“You’re not lying?”

“No. I feel great. I don’t even have muscle aches today!”

Woo-seok looked suspicious, but Go Ha-jin was telling the truth.

For some reason, he genuinely felt refreshed.

As though the events of the previous night had never happened.

And even if that weren’t the case, he definitely did not want to go through the embarrassment of that treatment again.

“Even here?”

Woo-seok squeezed his butt and asked.

“Uh… yeah.”

“I’ll check for myself later.”

“…What?”

“What?”

When Go Ha-jin insisted he was healed, Woo-seok had previously asked how he could possibly know.

Yet now he spoke as though he could determine it himself.

“Anyway! I’m really okay today. I feel surprisingly refreshed.”

“…You really are naturally gifted. You adapt ridiculously fast. Well, that’s good for me.”

From Woo-seok’s perspective, it was excellent news.

If Go Ha-jin had still been recovering, he would have been forced into several more days of restraint.

The thought alone was frustrating.

“Should I skip work today…?”

“…Why? Even if you don’t have much to do, you should at least show your face at the office.”

Woo-seok sighed.

Sometimes Go Ha-jin really failed to understand obvious hints.

“Come eat breakfast.”

“You never eat breakfast.”

“…Just get up and come. I already prepared it.”

He always had to get the last word in.

****

“Director, the final interviews for the experienced hires are today…”

“Oh, right. Let me see their resumes first.”

“Excuse me? You’re actually going to read them? Ah… yes.”

The secretary had already been surprised multiple times today.

For the first time since he’d started working for him, Woo-seok had arrived at the office early.

He had even made coffee for himself.

And he’d reviewed neglected reports thoroughly and efficiently.

The man was acting completely differently.

“Hm. Hmm.”

As Woo-seok scrolled through the resumes on his tablet, he found himself humming.

‘Humming?’

The secretary wondered whether his boss was dying.

There was no other explanation.

Then suddenly Woo-seok stopped.

“Wait.”

He set the resumes aside and opened a web browser.

Search term:

[Adult Products]

The thought had occurred to him the previous night.

What if something else were used instead?

What if he teased Go Ha-jin with different things?

The moment he imagined it, his thoughts spiraled.

“Damn it… I’m turned on again.”

Was he going through puberty or something?

His lower body felt uncomfortable almost instantly.

By the time he finished browsing, his shopping cart was overflowing.

“…Should I just go home?”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t even noon yet.

****

“I’m leaving.”

“It’s only three o’clock… Ah, yes. Have a good evening.”

Three o’clock, six o’clock, close enough.

Woo-seok headed straight home.

Unlike before, going home early no longer felt unpleasant.

The reason for that change had never really crossed his mind.

“W-Welcome back, Director…”

Several household staff were gathered near the entrance, whispering among themselves.

The moment he saw them, he knew something had happened.

“What’s going on?”

“I think… you should go to the main house.”

Without waiting for further explanation, Woo-seok headed there.

With every step, his mood darkened.

Anxiety and irritation rose together.

The moment he opened the front door…

Smack!

A sharp crack echoed through the hall.

“How dare you lie to me? You insignificant thing!”

People he could never quite hate because they were family.

People toward whom he felt something closer than resentment, yet farther than affection.

People he had always tried to understand.

Among them stood Go Ha-jin, his head snapped to the side from the force of a slap.
