Chapter 143: The Fathers’ Banter

After the auction ended, Father Su and Father Ye bid farewell to Su Liyue and her friends, needing to ship their purchases back to the mansion.

Father Su spoke with slight apology: “This trip to the capital was rushed; otherwise, I would have taken you all out for a proper meal before leaving.”

Su Liyue immediately understood her father’s meaning and smiled. “Dad, don’t worry. When the academy is on break, I can bring my friends home to visit. Just make sure you prepare plenty of good dishes then.”

Both elders laughed heartily.

“Of course! The doors of the Su and Ye families are always open to you.”

Father Ye patted Su Liyue’s adorable little head. “The bass in our backyard pond are nice and fat, just waiting for you all…”

Then he suddenly put on a stern face.

“Especially that rascal Xingchen. Not taking his studies seriously is one thing, but he doesn’t even know how to care for his sweetheart. If he acts up again, I’ll break his legs!”

Su Liyue hooked her arm through Father Ye’s and acted coy. “Don’t worry, Dad. Brother Xingchen treats me very well. How could he ever dare to bully me?”

After all, the two families had known each other since childhood, and their bond was deep. Su Liyue’s fate with Ye Xingchen had been sealed from the day she was born.

Moreover, the Ye and Su families were next-door neighbors, their friendship as thick as blood.

But only they themselves knew that this marriage was far stranger than it appeared. Su Liyue was Ye Xingchen, and Ye Xingchen was Su Liyue.

If their parents ever found out, who knew what a joke it would become.

She still remembered back when the two bodies would address their parents separately, inevitably causing mix-ups.

One moment this body would call “Mom” and “Dad,” the next that body would say “Uncle” and “Aunt,” often leaving the adults completely confused.

Later, she had a brainwave. Since they were already engaged, why not unify their address? Both bodies would call all four elders “Mom” and “Dad.”

From that moment on, the elders saw the two children’s intimacy and finally set their hearts at ease.

They had once secretly worried that such a special union might cause resistance when the children grew up.

Now, hearing the sweet “Mom” and “Dad,” both sets of parents exchanged smiles, the corners of their eyes crinkling with happiness.

Whenever the two fathers mentioned Ye Xingchen, Li Yunxin, Su Liyue, and Mu Wanqing would instantly adopt subtle expressions.

Li Yunxin, however, felt a pang of anxiety. The relationship between the Su and Ye families seemed so close; winning over Su Liyue would be very difficult. She’d have to find time to ask Ye Xingchen about his specific intentions toward Su Liyue.

Su Liyue’s expression remained calm, but inwardly she thought, ‘Ye Xingchen is me. I don’t even need to inform him of what I do.’

But… this might be a good opportunity to invite Qingqing over for a visit.

Mu Wanqing, on the other hand, felt a bit shy, her cheeks flushing slightly.

‘Yueyue’s elders are so close. No wonder Ye Xingchen and she are so intimate. And I treated him like that during the familiar summoning ceremony…’ A wave of guilt washed over her.

Father Ye laughed heartily. “Good, good, good. As long as you’re not wronged. I’m counting the days until you two get married. I can’t wait to see Old Su’s face when he cries at his daughter’s wedding!”

Father Su immediately raised an eyebrow in counterattack. “Oh, you, Old Ye! Hasn’t that kid Xingchen been calling me ‘Dad’ since he was little? The two families are separated by just one wall. Even if Yueyue marries over, coming back to her maiden home is only a step away. You’d better not hold onto your grandson and refuse to let go!”

Father Ye shot back, “Isn’t my grandson also your grandson? If you can’t let go, just have them give us two kids! Then we can take turns holding them and see who won’t let go!”

Father Su slapped the table and laughed. “Well said! Then let’s have them bear twins. We’ll take turns raising them and see who complains first!”

Su Liyue’s forehead broke out in cold sweat.

‘These two fathers are getting more and more ridiculous. They were just teasing each other, and now the war has turned on me?’ She stole a glance at Mu Wanqing beside her.

‘I don’t even want one kid, and you two are already planning twins? How about you two become women yourselves and experience what childbirth is like?’

Li Yunxin, who had thought she might have a sliver of a chance, now felt that the idea of taking Su Liyue into her harem seemed very unlikely.

‘Is it the radish that strayed, or the cucumber that kissed the wrong mouth? No, no. I have to go find Ye Xingchen tomorrow and get the full story. Regardless of how far their relationship has progressed, for the sake of this fellow townsman bond, I have to ask.’

“Alright, Dad,” Su Liyue interrupted the two fathers’ banter at the right moment.

“Brother Xingchen and I won’t get married until after graduation. Weren’t you two just saying you needed to rush back? If you’re not in a hurry now, why not stay for a meal? Mom won’t mind.”

As soon as she finished, Father Su and Father Ye seemed to remember something and hurriedly jumped onto their carriage.

“Yueyue, your mother is waiting at home for me to eat!” Father Su waved hastily.

“Right, right!” Father Ye glanced at the items in his storage ring and nodded repeatedly.

“We have to rush back… uh… to turn in homework! You youngsters have fun, but don’t come home too late!”

Homework? Hearing that, Li Yunxin almost burst out laughing. Heaven knows how she held it in. But from the exchange between Su Liyue’s two fathers, she keenly caught a key piece of information.

Su Liyue and Ye Xingchen’s wedding had to wait until after graduation. And if they were truly so intimate, they should be eager to marry. Yet from the conversation, there seemed to be a hint of reluctance. Although it could be interpreted as an excuse to send the fathers home…

But… perhaps it wasn’t entirely hopeless?
