Join the ServerTime slipped away in silent, measured breaths, the arena thick with the unique scent of mingling potions—a faint bitterness mingled with a crisp chill.
A series of soft clinks rang out as several upperclassmen completed their concoctions, placing their finished test tubes on the display rack. The swirling luminescence within the vials and the lingering medicinal fragrance told any discerning eye their quality: most hovered between peak third-grade and early fourth-grade, with the best among them reaching only mid fourth-grade.
The seniors exhaled in relief, their gazes sweeping the room before settling on two figures still busy in the corner.
When they saw Liu Yuxuan and Ye Xingchen—the perpetual stragglers—still struggling with the final steps, a wave of mockery erupted.
“Hah, those two losers still haven’t given up?” a sneer rang out, quickly igniting a chorus of ridicule. “If it were me, I’d have backed out the moment I saw the ingredient list. At least I’d save face.”
“Exactly. With their meager skills, they dare to show up here? Dawdling so long and can’t even finish a basic potion.” Another voice cut in, dripping with sarcasm, eyes flicking to a nearby workstation. “Anyone watching would think they were trying to pull a Fan Jian and brew a fifth-grade potion.”
Before the laughter could settle, a sudden shout erupted from the crowd: “Look! Senior Fan Jian is done!”
All eyes snapped toward him. Fan Jian sat upright at his bench, his expression solemn as a ritual, both hands suspended above two test tubes as mana pulsed around him.
He took a deep breath. His spiritual force wrapped around the tubes like invisible threads; with intense concentration, the potions within seemed to come alive, merging along an unseen trajectory.
Within moments, a potion coalesced, its surface gleaming with a warm luster. The pure color and rich, lingering fragrance intertwined—anyone could tell at a glance it was a genuine fifth-grade potion.
Even the judges on the dais nodded repeatedly in approval.
“Such stable control. I suppose there’s no suspense about first place in this match.”
“Fan Jian is indeed talented,” the female instructor beside him agreed. “With another year of polishing, he might even contend for a higher rank in the academy tournament.”
“But compared to a prodigy like Fan Jian, those newly promoted third-years, Ye Xingchen and Liu Yuxuan, seem far behind. I just hope they aren’t too discouraged by this first match. After all, every year we have a few rookies who lose all confidence in this subject.”
Tang Wanrou listened to the judges’ chatter, a silent sigh escaping her.
‘These judges really lack insight. Looks like Starry Sky Academy has gone corrupt too. Those “slow” moves by Ye Xingchen and Liu Yuxuan were clearly precise control of mana and flame—how could ordinary people see the subtleties? Without even that level of perception, I wonder how they managed to sneak into this academy. Ridiculous.’
On the other side of the stands, Mu Wanqing’s anger had been simmering from the relentless mockery around her. She tugged at her friend’s sleeve, her voice urgent:
“Yueyue, I noticed you’ve been quiet all this time. Look at them badmouthing Ye Xingchen—aren’t you mad at all?”
Su Liyue snapped back to the present. Her spiritual force had been fully concentrated, almost entirely focused on Ye Xingchen’s movements—or rather, on the self within Ye Xingchen’s body.
After all, as a top-tier alchemist from the cultivation world, refining such trash potions was risky; one slip-up could expose her true skill. Especially now, when she was deliberately suppressing her grade—a single tremor of the hand could send the potion quality soaring, and then the trouble would be immense.
“Uh…” Su Liyue steadied herself, quickly changing the subject by pointing to a nearby figure. “Why bother with those clowns? Look at Li Yunxin—she’s pretty calm, isn’t she?”
As she spoke, she breathed a secret sigh of relief. That interruption by Mu Wanqing had nearly made her fingers twitch out of control. Close call.
Li Yunxin, suddenly put on the spot, had been staring blankly in Mu Wanqing’s direction. She turned her head, confused:
“Huh? What are you talking about? What does this have to do with me?”
Her dazed look dispelled much of Mu Wanqing’s anger, though she still clenched her fists inwardly, watching the two still busy in the arena.
