Chapter 165: Watching the Preliminary Matches

After a day of rest and medication, Su Liyue felt much better than yesterday. She glanced at the ranking match schedule; her match was in the afternoon, while Ye Xingchen and Liu Yuxuan’s alchemy rank matches were in the morning. The timing worked out perfectly.

Mu Wanqing and Li Yunxin were also assigned to the afternoon session like her. Perhaps the academy deliberately separated the written exam and combat matches? But that wasn’t important.

What mattered was that she, Mu Wanqing, and Li Yunxin could first watch the senior students’ battles. By observing these experienced fighters, they could better assess the actual strength of the upperclassmen.

Li Yunxin, Su Liyue, and Mu Wanqing sat together in the stands, watching the first match of the morning. It was between two fourth-year students: a summoner versus a fire mage.

The summoner immediately conjured a pure white unicorn. Its gleaming contract runes indicated it was at least an epic-rank familiar.

“This is my first time seeing a summoner in action,” Mu Wanqing said, staring at the snowy unicorn. “If you can summon a familiar to fight alongside you, doesn’t that create a two-on-one advantage?”

Li Yunxin shook her head. “True. Relying on a powerful familiar gives you an edge, but the academy has considered that. If you use a familiar in battle, you’re forbidden from using other attack spells. And the stronger the familiar, the more mana it consumes. Only those who specialize in summoning can really rely on them to climb the rankings.”

“Uh… am I the only one focusing on that white horse and its summoner?” Su Liyue remarked softly, watching the two mages exchange their first probing attacks.

“Now that you mention it, I’m thinking the same thing,” Li Yunxin said, staring at the mage riding the unicorn.

“Damn! He’s only a fourth-year, seventeen at most, and he’s already achieved the Mediterranean look? And it’s so shiny?!”

“Huh? What’s wrong with being bald? Yunxin, Yueyue, is there a problem? Maybe he worked so hard he went bald and got stronger!” Mu Wanqing recalled the story Su Liyue had told her about the bald teacher.

“No, Qingqing, this is different from that bald teacher. That teacher actively pursued strength, but this guy probably got rubbed bald by the unicorn,” Su Liyue said.

“Right, right. The one riding a white horse isn’t necessarily a prince…” Li Yunxin grinned mischievously.

“Maybe he’s Tang Seng!” Su Liyue caught on instantly.

They exchanged knowing smiles, leaving Mu Wanqing blinking in confusion. “Tang… Seng?”

As the first probing exchange ended, the fire mage couldn’t hold back. He swung his wand vigorously. “Blazing Sky Inferno!”

With his call, fire elements gathered instantly. Starting from his position, searing waves of flame erupted from the ground, surging toward the summoner.

Even the three of them in the audience could feel the scorching wind.

“This fire mage is no pushover. He knows the summoner can’t use other spells and the familiar can’t fly, so he plans to use area-of-effect magic to corner him and finish him in one blow,” Li Yunxin commented.

Su Liyue shook her head. “A summoning specialist should be aware of that fatal weakness. If he really exposed such an obvious flaw, then summoning wouldn’t be any different from other elemental schools.”

Sure enough, as Su Liyue predicted, the summoner suddenly pulled back on the reins.

The unicorn reared up, its spiral horn blazing with dazzling light.

When its hooves slammed down, a visible whirlwind barrier materialized. It not only repelled the flames but also wrapped them around, sending the fire back at the caster.

“What?!” The fire mage’s hastily raised flame shield wobbled violently under the hurricane’s impact. He stumbled back three steps before steadying himself.

Through the distorted heat haze, the shock on his face was still visible. He had clearly underestimated the true power of an epic-rank familiar.
