Just like with his teammates earlier, Woojoo couldn’t refuse Coach Kim’s request.
The two headed to the lounge inside the gym.
The coach could have taken him to his office, but he didn’t.
Perhaps it was his way of keeping things from becoming too stiff.
“Nothing beats instant mix coffee, right?”
Coach Kim handed Woojoo a cup from the vending machine.
The dark, sand-colored liquid swayed before settling in his hand.
“You don’t really drink café coffee, do you?”
“I like this better.”
Woojoo smiled knowingly and took a sip.
The sweet, deep flavor spread through his mouth, making his body relax just a little.
They sat side by side in silence, the only sound being quiet sips of coffee.
Woojoo glanced at the coach, then fidgeted with his fingers.
“Coach, um… I think I’ve been a bit sensitive lately without realizing it because I’ve been tired.”
Like a student confessing before being scolded, Woojoo broke the silence first.
Coach Kim simply nodded with a faint smile.
“Woojoo, do you enjoy playing volleyball?”
“Yes.”
There was no hesitation.
No doubt.
Volleyball was that kind of thing for him.
And it must have been the same for Ji-tae.
“But lately, when I watch you train, it doesn’t look like you’re enjoying it at all.”
Woojoo lifted his head in surprise.
The coach continued in a calm, even tone.
“Whether it’s practice or a match, you used to look like you owned the world whenever you had the ball. But these days… not so much.”
“I’m sorry…”
It was the first time he had heard something like this from him.
Woojoo lowered his head, uncharacteristically subdued.
His once-strong pride now seemed broken, leaving only sensitivity behind.
“Hey, don’t act so timid. That’s your problem. You’ve got skill and sense, but sometimes you get anxious and shrink back. You were like that when I first recruited you too.”
Back then, Woojoo had been desperate to prove himself.
To repay the coach who believed in him.
“You got better as time passed, as you bonded with your teammates and achieved results. But I still see it sometimes.”
In front of Coach Kim, Woojoo often felt exposed.
As if everything inside him was being seen through.
“I thought you’d gotten over that pressure recently. I felt relieved.”
“Recently?”
“Yeah… when was it…”
The coach rubbed his chin, thinking.
“Ah, after that variety show.”
Woojoo flinched.
The coffee in his hand trembled slightly.
After the show—after he met Ji-tae again.
“After that friendly match, I thought you’d completely shaken it off. You know how you looked back then?”
That match against Yoon Jaeyeon’s team.
It had become a hot topic among fans, with clips titled ‘Godlike Kang Woojoo insane play’ spreading everywhere.
“How did I look?”
He had been curious, since the coach hadn’t said much back then.
“Like a kid.”
“…You mean I looked childish?”
The coach chuckled.
“Not that. You looked like you were genuinely having fun.”
“……”
“Winning didn’t matter. You were just… enjoying volleyball. I’ve watched you for a long time, but that was the first time I saw you like that.”
What was different about that match?
He played the same as always.
Moved the same as always.
His body had felt lighter, sure—but nothing else seemed different.
Then suddenly—
A memory flashed.
Ji-tae was there.
He was in the gym.
Watching him play.
That was the only difference.
“What I’m trying to say is simple.”
The coach glanced at Woojoo, who was staring at the floor.
“I want you to play like that. I didn’t call you here to scold you.”
He crushed the empty paper cup and gently patted Woojoo’s shoulder.
Even as he received advice and comfort from someone he respected deeply, Woojoo couldn’t say anything.

Before he knew it, it was already July—the peak of summer.
The older he got, the faster time seemed to pass.
His closet had long switched from spring clothes to short sleeves and light pants.
Even the fans he brought out weren’t enough—life without air conditioning had become impossible.
Sweat trickled down Woojoo’s forehead as he finished cleaning the house.
He had turned off the AC to ventilate, and now he was paying the price.
Lately, even when alone, Woojoo kept himself busy.
If he stayed still, thoughts of Ji-tae crept in.
Since that day, after hearing everything, they had completely cut off contact.
Objectively, it wasn’t hard.
Their connection had only existed because of work.
If they wanted, they could simply not see each other.
And that was the logical thing to do.
But humans were contradictory.
[You know how they say, if you see a cockroach outside, it means there are already tons inside…]
The TV played “Living Together”.
Woojoo had turned it on himself.
Not just that—at night, he checked Ji-tae’s Instagram, watched videos of him.
He couldn’t sleep, then spent the next day exhausted, trying to distract himself—only to repeat the cycle.
On screen, Ji-tae was whining about being scared of cockroaches.
Woojoo stopped vacuuming and stared.
On screen, they looked like nothing more than friends.
And back then, Woojoo had believed they would always be that.
But now, their relationship had no clear form.
No color.
Just left hanging.
What had Ji-tae been feeling while filming together?
As Woojoo’s gaze turned cold—
The intercom rang loudly.
“Ah, already…”
He had a guest coming today.
He opened the door, quickly tidied up, turned on the AC, and shut off the TV.
A knock followed.
He opened it.
“You’re here?”
“Hello, hyung.”
Dongha stood there with shopping bags in both hands.
“It’s hot outside, right?”
“Yeah. This summer’s really intense.”
“The AC’s on, it’ll cool down soon.”
After letting him in, Woojoo headed to the kitchen to grab coffee capsules.
He smiled slightly at Dongha looking around the house.
“Oh, hyung. This.”
Dongha handed him one of the smaller shopping bags.
That was the reason he came today.
“The cover came out really nicely.”
